My Little Sister brings together three elements that are central to our lives. First, the city of Berlin, with which we’ve had strong links for over 15 years. Secondly, the theatre, as we are both actors. And finally, the exceptional friendship that dates back to our childhood. Stéphanie and Véronique were first and foremost two teenagers who shared the same love of theatre and decided to make a career out of it. It is together that we created a multitude of shows and started making films. We both feel more alive when we are creating than in everyday life, like the twins in our film. We made them part of that theatre family because we are fascinated by the fire that drives those known in Germany as “Theatermensch”. In this community, an actor who doesn’t perform doesn’t exist. Whilst on stage, he glows, borne by the presence of the audience. The film tells of the necessity of dreams as a way of escaping reality. And through the unshakeable bonds that link these two beings, our film celebrates the fragility and potency of life, and the strength of transmission, and relates that the end of one life can also be the start of another.

Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond have known each other since childhood. They are both trained actors and since 1993 they collaborated on various dramatic events, combining theater, song and silent film. Since 2001 they are also screenwriters and film directors. Their short film Berlin Backstage won an award at the Berlin Today Awards (Berlinale 2004). The duo moved on to write and direct their first feature film The Little Bedroom, which premiered at Locarno Film Festival 2010. It was selected to represent Switzerland at the Academy Awards, won two Swiss Quartz Prizes (Best Fiction Film and Best Screenplay), and received a dozen awards at international festivals. Their documentary work includes Evening Class for Adults (2005) Buffo, Bute and Howard (2009), and Ladies (2018). The latter screened at a numerous festivals, was nominated for a Swiss Film Award and became a Swiss box office hit. They also wrote and directed the TV series Open Book (2014) for Swiss and French TV. Their new TV series Toxic is currently in development.

Making the movie  Berlin Alexanderplatz was like working on and with a lifelong companion. To me, the key for the new interpretation of the novel is the continuation of a theme that also plays a role in my other films: the stranger, who must find his way and himself in a new world. Turning the main character, Franz Biberkopf, into a refugee in current times is  also a consistent translation of my own history. The novel’s poetic wealth and its visual catalogue of guilt and redemption are the colors that I use, in order to draw a very personal picture of the book. But the focus of this picture always remains the human being and his or her striving for a dignified, “decent“ life in times of upheaval.

M A R K E T P R E M I E R E

Having been shot by his only real friend, Ciro sinks down into the dark waters of the Gulf of Naples. As he drifts towards the depths, memories float upwards. Faint sounds find their way through the cold embrace of the water – muffled screams of panic! It’s 1980. A devastating earthquake sends buildings crashing down. From beneath the rubble, the cry of a baby emerges. It is none other than Ciro di Marzio. From that day on, he will be known as “The Immortal”. Years later, he survives even that fateful gunshot. It is true: nothing can kill The Immortal. From his past as an orphan to his present-day Baltic exile, from his first petty thefts to all-out gang warfare: Ciro confronts whatever comes his way head-on, in a world in which immortality is just another form of damnation.

Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing it became dangerous for some people to live in your country. That is what happens to 9-year-old Anna in 1933. Anna is not sure who Hitler is. But when her own father goes missing one day, she comes to realize that the man on the posters is about to change the whole of Europe – starting with her own small life. She is forced to leave her favorite stuffed pink rabbit behind and uproot her entire existence to move first to Switzerland and later to Paris. From now on Anna encounters life as a refugee, not speaking the language, not knowing customs and manners, missing her friends and loved ones. Finding a school is difficult, money is very short and her family encounters xenophobia, too. Yet Anna grows up, finds new friends, and learns to take responsibility.

Sofia, November 9th, 2019. Night. As the country prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the regime change in Bulgaria, three police patrol cars roam the streets of the sleeping city. The police officers on their rounds take us on a journey through a society that is still looking for its purpose and identity after three decades of transition. These are scenes of survival and failure, of lives saved while others are lost, of generosity dissolving into social cruelty and indifference. The elusive preservation of dignity seems to be the sole point of getting through the night.

THE CLUB OF UGLY CHILDREN

“Keep it clean!” – The slogan of the new president rings through the streets. It is to be taken literally, and that includes looks. One of the unsightly kids is Paul, whose large ears are quite apparent on class photo day. When he and some of the “ugly” children are taken on a trip the next day, they soon realize that the president wants to hide them away. Paul escapes. On the run, and with help from Sara, one of the “pretty” children, he starts an underground club to fight against the president. The movement soon grows bigger and quickly turns into a revolution. The kids will show the world that even children can rise up and that you don’t have to be “pretty” to be a hero!

U P C O M I N GU P C O M I N G

This is the true story of Freddy and Walter – two young Slovak Jews, who were deported to Auschwitz in 1942. On 10 April 1944, after meticulous planning and with the help and the resilience of their inmates, they manage to escape. While the inmates they had left behind courageously stand their ground against the Nazi officers, the two men are driven on by the hope that their evidence could save lives. Emaciated and hurt, they make their way through the mountains back to Slovakia. With the help of chance encounters, they finally manage to cross the border and meet the resistance and The Red Cross. They compile a detailed report about the systematic genocide at the camp. However, with Nazi propaganda and international liaisons still in place, their account seems to be too harrowing to believe.

John, a 35-year-old window cleaner, has dedicated his life to bringing up his 4-year-old son, Michael, after the child’s mother left them soon after giving birth. When John is given only a few months left to live, he attempts to find a new, perfect family for Michael, determined to shield him from the terrible reality of the situation. Although initially certain of what he is looking for in the perfect family, John gradually abandons his early convictions, over- whelmed by doubts on the decision. How can he judge a family from a brief encounter? And does he know his own child well enough to make this choice for him? As John struggles to find the right answer to his impossible task, he comes to accept the help of a young social worker, opening himself to solutions he would never have considered. And he finally comes to accept his anger at the injustice of his destiny, the need to share the truth with his son, and to follow the child’s instincts on the biggest decision of their lives.

When her boyfriend Ben suddenly dies in an accident, mother-to-be Charlotte collapses with shock upon receiving the news. When she regains consciousness she finds herself in Ben’s family home, a crumbling old manor house in the middle of nowhere with Ben’s overbearing mother, Margaret, and his controlling stepbrother, Thomas, determined to care for her, at least until the baby arrives. Grief-stricken, frail and increasingly haunted by visions possibly brought on by the pregnancy, Charlotte has little choice but to accept their help. But as the days go by she begins to doubt their intentions and her suspicions grow. She slowly begins to suspect that they are drugging her and keeping her captive, isolated from the outside world with the aim of taking her unborn baby. As her visions intensify and the haze of lies grows, Charlotte’s fear builds and she decides that her only option is to break free from this family once and for all – but at what cost?

A tale of a young woman, struggling with a slow breakdown of her own reality. Or is it a tale of a woman who is being brainwashed and psychologically abused by her deceased boyfriend’s family?
