Dear Church Family, The past few months have been an amazing journey for me. From the very first time I sat down with the Personnel Committee, I could tell that there was something special about the SMCC church. As I have been blessed with the opportunity to meet each of you and to preach on Sundays, I have grown in my love for this church. This is a place where we can truly feel the presence of God. Whether in worship, Sunday School, or in plain conversation; God is with SMCC! As I have prayed and asked for God’s will to be done, we have grown closer. The call of this church to be the Senior Pastor is truly God’s will. I will always work hard to bring glory to God’s great name! I could not help but marvel that God has had His hands in events of the past few months. The very Sunday that the congregation voted, I charged everyone to “Do Something!” Little did I know that you would that very day. Now it is up to me to take this investment and “do something” to help this church. I am looking forward to working with each and every person of this church. That is what God has sent me here to do. We will work together and see what we can do to assist in expanding the Kingdom of God. Over the next few months, we will be in an adjustment period. I hope that we all can come together so that this transitional period will be as peaceful as possible. This church has a very vibrant life! There are many ministries that are very active. As I traverse through this adjustment period, I will be asking for your help. God has blessed this church and I have been blessed to have the opportunity to Pastor this church! As we embark on this new adventure, let us not forget what the Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the church at Philippi. 4:13 I can do ALL things through Him who strengthens me. I am excited and I believe the church is too! It is time to set to work and see what we can do with the strength that God has granted us.
With great love,
Andrew Shue

From the Board:
Psalm 126:3 “The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad.” What joy we have at Southwood Memorial Christian Church! We have celebrated with one another the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, we have enjoyed fellowship and food at a spaghetti fund-raiser for the youth, our kids enjoyed a wonderful time at the Easter egg hunt, and we have welcomed our new full-time pastor and his family. Hallelujah and praise to the Lord! Thank you Andrew for a great message at the sunrise service, thank you Louise and the choir for a wonderful cantata, thank you Jessica, the youth leaders and the youth for a great spaghetti lunch, and thank you Amy and others for a delicious breakfast and enjoyable time at the Easter egg hunt. What joy all of you has brought to Southwood Memorial Christian Church! At the April board meeting, several items were brought to the board’s attention. The air conditioner at the yellow rental house next door had to be replaced at a cost of approximately $4500. The church ad in the newspaper needs to be changed to reflect our new times and our new pastor. The board approved our minister attending the Regional Assembly in Raleigh on April 25 – 27 and representing our church. We are asked to make an effort to speak to visitors and invite them back to church. The Christian Education Committee reported that the youth had made $891 from the spaghetti lunch and this money would go to help pay one-half the cost of camp for each youth attending. Camp tuition is approximately $300 per person. The youth will be having another fundraiser at Bo jangles on April 28. Darcie reported that the Gathering and Sunday school are going well. The Constitution and By-Laws Committee presented a handout of recommended changes in the constitution. Everyone is to make suggestions and recommendations to committee members. The Nominating Committee reported the slate of new officers for next year and are as follows: Chairman of the Board, David Scott Moody; Vice-Chairman, Harper Grant; Secretary, Sue Moody; Treasurer, Yvonne Daughety; Financial Secretary, Zelma Davenport; Assistant Financial Secretary, Joan Simpson; Church Clerk, Jessica Jones; Historian, Judith Kennedy; Church Publicity Director, Susan Baker; Sunday School Superintendent, David Scott Moody; Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Harper Grant; and Sunday School Treasurer, Susan Baker. The board approved these nominations and the congregation will vote for this slate of officers at the annual congregational meeting on May 18. The Property Committee reported that the parsonage next door which will be rented in May is in need of repairs. The projected cost of the repairs is estimated to be between $1000 and $1500. The committee will also be working to remove mold and mildew on the walls and cabinets. The Scholarship Committee reported that they received approximately 15 applications. Heather informed the board that Nick and Glenda Kornegay have indicated that they wish to have their scholarship depleted. The Stewardship and Finance Committee reported that budgets for the next fiscal year are due by the end of April. Heather Kennedy announced that the CWF had purchased a robe for Jim Cullen who is preaching at Lanie’s Chapel and that it would be presented to him on Sunday, April 27. All are invited to attend. The CWF has also purchased a robe for Andrew and will present it to him at a later date. David Moody thanked Jay Robinson for his aid with the recent benefit. As we continue to serve the Lord with joy in our hearts, let us remember Philippians 2: 3-5. “3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.
