THEY HIT THE JACKPOT!

PLAY TO WINFrom Theodore: I am totally confused

by certain things I have read about casino gambling. I am a novice and I have not played so far and therefore maybe I am misreading what I have read. Take craps for instance. The Pass Line bet is supposed to be a good bet and the house edge is something like 1.4 percent. How can that be?

So I make the bet, but if I lose it, do I lose 1.4 percent? No, I lose the whole bet. If I win, I win the whole bet.

Now, how can that be? I am right that you either win or lose a

bet correct? I have not yet put my money where my doubts are so maybe you can help me in this? How do you lose 1.4 percent, Mr. Scoblete? It doesn’t seem to make sense.

Frank Responds: You are taking the idea of winning and losing a bet as a one shot deal. If you make one Pass Line bet in your whole life, then yes, you win or lose that bet and that is that. The number of decisions, which is one, cannot become 1.4 percent. It is either a 100 percent or no percent wager.

But if you make thousands of those bets then the percentages will start to look like the math. You must remember that the Pass Line bet will win 251 decisions for the casino and win only 244 decisions for the player. Those are averages and it takes a long time to see such averages work out in the real world.

As the number of decisions begins to build you will begin to see that you don’t just win a bet and lose a bet, you experience the house edge percentages — or, at least, close to them. The percentages given as averages assume a long-run of playing time.

Is it possible that someone could be ahead of the house with 1,000 decisions on the Pass Line? Yes. But given 10,000 decisions, a winning Pass Line bettor would be a rare bird.

One more example: The average approximate height of an American male is 5’10” but most American males are not 5’10”. The range of heights is huge but when you average them all in the result is an average of 5’10”. There is a good chance you are not 5’10”. I’m not.

From Marie: I enjoy the slot machines and I do not care that you and other writers claim these are programmed to take our money. All casino games, slot machines included, are created to take our money. That’s the whole point of the casino, making money.

But I have started to read articles on the slot machines and I realize that each machine or type of machine is programmed differently. Some machines give out more money over time and other machines give out less money over time.

I want to play the machines that give out the most money I need a quick primer about which machines are which. Can you help me in this?

Frank Responds: I don’t think conscientious gambling writers lie and say there is a way to get an edge on slot machines. I did write in my book Slot Conquest: How to Beat the Slot Machines about certain banking machines that at times go into positive range but these machines have mostly disappeared. That’s sad for the player.

And, yes, you are right; the casino is in the business of making money for itself. It is a business after all. I doubt most players think otherwise.

I will give you “rules of thumb” in terms of looking for the best machines. I would avoid all of the following machines:

•Mega-progressive-jackpot machines,

such as Megabucks, that are interlinked among casinos

•Any machine that has more than one

machine linked with it•Any progressive machine•Penny, nickel and dime machines that

allow you to bet many times more than the denomination

I would look to play the following machines:

•Stand-alone machines that do not reward a player for betting more than one credit. This means the jackpot is merely a multiple of the first bet, such as $200 for one credit, $400 for two credits and $600 for three credits and so on. (Merely bet one credit on such machines!)

•Stand-alone machines of any typeThe higher the denomination of

machine, the looser the machine will be but your losses will be more because a smaller percentage of a larger bet will still lose you more money than you would lose on a smaller denomination machine.

As I stated, these are generalizations but they should help you.

Many slot players enjoy playing machines with extremely high

house edges in the hope that they can win a life-changing

jackpot. The odds of such a thing happening are remote indeed. If you are not a dreamer my advice is good. It will save you money over time.

Included are offers for free rooms, buffets, shows, slot play, betting money and more.

The 480-page book is widely recognized as the authoritative resource for travelers seeking information on any U.S. casino. The completely updated paperback book covers 42 states and lists money-saving information on more than 700 casinos — every casino/resort in the U.S. — plus, all Indian and riverboat casinos, too.

The newest edition of the guide, which has been published annually since 1992 and has sold more than 900,000 copies, provides toll-free phone numbers, website addresses, room and suite rates, dining information (including buffet prices), details on senior discounts and any unique or special features offered by each casino, as well as information on the games that are offered.

Also included are informative maps of the 42 states showing where each casino is located. There are detailed maps of five major gaming areas: Las Vegas, Reno, Atlantic City, Biloxi and Tunica.

The guide is written by Steve Bourie a former gaming industry executive with more than 30 years of experience. Bourie also has a YouTube channel at youtube.com/americancasinoguide, where

Additionally, the book includes complete statistics showing the actual returns on slot machines as provided by each state’s gaming commission, plus full details on which casinos offer the best table game rules and best-paying video poker games in all of the major gaming areas.

By David GrishamTUNICA — This month

not only sees the World Se-ries of Poker (WSOP) Cir-cuit coming to Horseshoe Tunica (Jan. 18-29), it also marks the fourth anniversa-ry of the casino’s expanded and upgraded poker room. When the ribbon was cut in the ceremonial grand open-ing for the Horseshoe Tu-nica Poker Room on Jan. 9, 2014, a legendary poker ex-perience got even better.

At a time when pok-er rooms where closing, Horseshoe Tunica doubled the size of its poker room and went all-in on player-friendly amenities. The up-scale poker room is coupled with a World Series of Pok-er Lounge, where players can wait for their poker seat in a comfortable and conve-nient area. Features include tableside food service, com-

plimentary beverage service, a self-serve coffee station, massages at the poker table, a dedicated poker cashier, cash game sign-up podium, tournament registration area, 16 large-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, electric and USB outlets and BRAVO soft-ware broad-casts, which al-low updates by text or email for players waiting on open seats. There is also a feature table to host high-inter-est games and tournament final tables.

The marriage of the WSOP and Horseshoe brands is a perfect pairing of two legendary names in the poker world, and it predates the opening of the expand-ed poker room by a decade. Caesars Entertainment has

owned the WSOP brand since 2004 and has hosted WSOP Circuit events here ever since, first at Harrah’s Tunica and then at Horse-shoe Tunica.

“It (the WSOP) is a growth brand for us. We’ve expanded on finals and cre-

ated circuit events,” said R. Scott Barber, regional president of Caesars Mid-South, adding that WSOP circuit stops bring ex-panded poker action and associated play to host casinos, result-ing in a natural busi-

ness lift.“Horseshoe Tunica has

seen growth every year we’ve hosted the event,” said Barber. “While we’ve seen this market, Tunica, lose half of its value over the past decade, poker con-tinues to grow three to five percent year over year. It’s been a fantastic story for us.”

The growth can be attrib-uted in part to the fact that the WSOP attracts players from near and far. “Histori-cally, we see visitation from all 50 states, with a heavy concentration from a three-hour radius. We see people from all over the world, 30 to 40 from Europe, a thou-sand participants from all over the country,” Barber said.

attracts a younger crowd more interested in games of skill, which, he said, brings in new players who like the social nature of the game and the modest buy-ins. “All the metrics of our business see a lift in January… hotel occupancy, increased slot volume, and increased table volume.”

For the WSOP Circuit, a tournament area is set up in Bluesville to accommodate the event. Lisa Crompton, poker room manager, said Bluesville offers an intimate setting for a tournament se-

ries that players love. “Play-ers look forward to this event every year,” she said. “Horseshoe and the WSOP are synonymous with poker and the tournament here has a great history. It’s a big event.”

How big? Plans call for 102 total tables, with 62 tournament tables and 39 live games. And with so many tables and players, there is much to choreo-graph. “Our poker room manager, Lisa, and her team do double duty, going back and forth between tourna-

ment play and live games,” Barber said, adding “Lisa is our resident expert in poker and knows all the players.”

Crompton has been in the poker room since 2005 and in the Tunica market since 1994. Her staff in-cludes Sheila Moore, day shift supervisor; Ross Car-roll, swing shift supervisor; and Dan Higginbotham, overnight shift supervi-sor. Barber said the WSOP Circuit typically features a mix of travelling dealers who follow the circuit and Horseshoe’s own dealers.

TUNICA — The venerable multi-platinum and Grammy nominated band Smash Mouth will perform at Gold Strike’s Millennium Theatre at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Smash Mouth recently cel-ebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut smash-hit al-bum Fush Yu Mang (FYM). Re-leased on July 8, 1997, FYM was a shocking success. Out of no-where, the single “Walkin’ On The Sun” was an immediate international sensation, quickly shooting to No. 1 on the Bill-board charts, and eventually boosting FYM sales to more than three million copies in the U.S. alone.

In celebration of the mile-stone year, Smash Mouth re-leased an acoustic version of FYM in its entirety, along with a mini-book recalling it’s making. A look back at Smash Mouth’s formative years reveals a band determined to make an impact from the get-go. Formed in 1994, the Smash Mouth imme-diately began recording demos and showcasing in both San Jose and Hollywood, California. In June of 1997, Smash Mouth is signed to Interscope Records when label brass catch wind of an unknown (and unsigned)

band being added to highly influential LA radio station KROQ’s playlist after only one spin of the song “Walkin’ On The Sun.”

Smash Mouth’s major-label debut Fush Yu Mang topped double platinum status and set the table for what most con-sider the band’s masterpiece, 1999’s brilliant follow-up album Astrolounge. The album boasted three top 10 hits - “All-Star,” “Then The Morning Comes,” and “Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby,” and approached quadruple platinum status.

Smash Mouth’s third Inter-scope release featured the first single “Pacific Coast Party” and the smash hit “I’m a Believer.”

Smash Mouth found-ing members Steve Harwell and Paul DeLisle (along with long-time keyboardist Mi-chael Klooster) recently wel-comed the return of world-class drummer Randy Cooke (with the band from 2010-2013), as well as introducing new guitar-ist Sam Eigen.

CASINO DINING GUIDE

By David GrishamTUNICA — Looking for an enjoyable casual fine dining experi-

ence that won’t break the bank? 1st Jackpot Casino Tunica has the answer with The Barn Prime. The restaurant features great food, great value and great portions.

Case in point is the Surf & Turf Special; available for $21.99, this dish features lobster with a New York strip and a side.

On a recent visit we ordered it and found the lobster to be sweet and succulent and the steak perfectly cooked to order, tender and

flavorful. A hot baked potato round-ed out the dish.

Food and Bever-age Director Kevin Hardrick and the staff do a fine job of creating satisfy-ing dishes. On this night, Sous Chef Jonathan Hender-son worked his

magic in the kitchen. We also found the service to be excellent, and enjoyed watching our steak being prepared on flat-screen monitors in the restaurant. It’s a nice touch, and the rustic atmosphere of The Barn Prime provides a comfortable setting that will leave diners feeling at ease.

The signature item is the prime bone-in rib eye. This juicy 22- ounce bone-in prime cut of beef is as good as it gets. Considering its size, one could easily share it with a dining compan-ion. At $44, it, too, is quite a bargain.

Other steak selections that are attractively

priced include a 12-ounce rib eye, top sirloin, New York strip and an 8-ounce filet. Prices range from $19 to $31. Adds-ons include siz-zling shrimp straight from the skillet for $9 more—something we took advantage of on our last trip—or crab legs or lobster tails, both available at market price.

Before enjoying our entrees, however, several at our table or-dered a salad. This was an easy selection for me. The Prime Sig-nature Salad is the way to go. It’s a harmonized blend of romaine, mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, spiced pecans and goat cheese, tossed in sherry vinaigrette.

Other selections include a generously sized wedge salad, a Caesar salad, French onion au gratin, and clam chowder. Prices range from $6 to $9.

We sampled some appetizers during our last visit, as well. Fried green tomatoes proved to be a nice choice. The green tomatoes

came breaded and seared in oil and were served with a delicious Cajun remoulade. The breading stayed put on the tomatoes while eating them, something fans of the dish can appreciate. They were hot on the inside and crispy on the outside and were hastily con-sumed by our party. So, too, were five plump oysters that arrived at our table. Topped with spinach sautéed with bacon, onions and peppers, the oysters were baked in a light cream sauce to a golden brown. Oysters Rockefeller are can’t-miss go-to option.

Other apps include jumbo shrimp cocktail, crawfish dip-n-chip, fried oysters, jumbo crab cakes, shrimp-and-grits, and a combo sea-food selection titled Bally’s Sea X 3.

After going all-in with salads and entrees, there was just enough room for dessert. Crème Brulee fit the bill. Every bite brought forth a sweet, creamy taste and a smooth crunch – yum.

The Barn features other dessert options and its menu includes an enticing selection of specialty items, too, (including ribs), a variety

of pasta dishes and plenty of sides from which to choose. For information on dining, or to make reservations, call 866-422-

JACKPOT!HOROSCOPE

By Paul Wade

Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only and are for the current time period.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Saturn entering your sign is like your chickens coming home to roost. You witness

and experience the consequences of what you have done over the past 30 years. What you see and feel mirror an attitude you’ve exhibited that has meant tough love for many you’ve encountered along the way.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Despite your reputation as the most progressive, revolutionary and liberal member of

the zodiac, those of your acquaintance will recognise you’re sticking close to what you know. Your tolerance of other’s eccentricities leaves others thinking you’re a pushover.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) — From one angle at least you may be happier than ever in an ideal association with

your perfect partner. But on the other, you’re vulnerable and anxious, almost as if no real-life scenario can ever match your expectations.

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You are increasingly concerned with what you have achieved and your standing in

the community. To meet your own criteria is an important requirement, but to ensure a contribution that everyone will respect unconditionally means a compromise is in the stars.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) — This period involves a focus on material realities, property matters and joint financial

interests. It may involve your spouse, a business partner, the bank, or any number of fiscal and government authorities.

Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Keep one eye cocked towards the brighter scenario you hope will prevail in future.

You have faced problems in almost every instance where you’ve needed to interact with others. Decide whether it is worth the effort.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — The bulk of our solar system denotes a journey from what has often been a solitary

struggle toward a scenario where others seem more than ready to assist you. Differentiate between a passing phase versus something that heralds a better set of circumstances.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — The period for taking stock is concluding and you’re resolving to make creative changes

over the months ahead. Life inevitably, grows serious soon enough, so it won’t always be so straightforward stepping back from your routines.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You continue to contemplate indescribable emotional issues that are in marked contrast to the

practicality for which you’re known. Home is in the forefront. There’s a real need for you to move on from finalities of the past few years.

Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) — Money matters are in the spotlight and luck is one your side. A battery fully charged

cannot hold any more power, so your current reserves need to diminish before more resources flow your way.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — When opportunities first come your way to broaden the scope of your experience,

expand your mind, discover more about the world and your place in it. It doesn’t take long for a new sense of certainty and optimism to overtake you.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — Saturn has bid farewell to your constellation after three years and has left you in

a vastly different financial position. You are considerably wiser. and financially, you are likely better off than when it arrived.
