Fulton Ravine South Park project

Although a few trees and some grass have been planted since this photo was taken, Fulton Ravine South park looks pretty bare right now. SECLA, in conjunction with the City of Edmon-ton, is developing plans for the second phase of park develop-ment near the skate park. Our ideas for the second phase focus on Healthy Living in a Healthy Environment:· With protection of biodiversity through native plantings and low impact development practices· Plantings of edible trees and shrubs· Design for both active living as well as passive enjoyment of the outdoors through benches, adult fitness equipment, and open green space. Do these ideas interest you? Would you like to express your opinion, or become part of the project team? We want to hear from you - stay tuned for SURVEY coming soon! For info, or to get involved, contact Connie Lussier by email [email protected] or phone: 780-462-1442.FUNDRAISING efforts in support of completion of the park-ing lot (an outstanding element of the initial phase of the park development) are in progress. You can contribute to this project through a personal or business donation. Donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt. THANK YOU EDMONTONIANS The City of Edmonton would like to thank every Ed-montonian who donated their time, energy, resources and so much more to assist the thousands of people who were forced to leave their homes in Fort McMur-ray and come to Edmonton. We live in an amazing city, province and country where strangers treat others like family in times of need. Edmonton boasts many great things, but our compassion and caring for others leads the way when we speak of community and how everyone, not only locally but around the globe stepped up to help.

Capilano Community Park Redevelopment – Update

Our FULL Phase 2 project plan, which includes a 700m walk-ing path, adult exercise equipment stations, a bike bumps course and a community sign, will be installed in 2016. Our final push to meet our fundraising goal went exceptionally well! Project funds were secured from the Province of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, the Capilano Community League, Suzuki Charter School, and industry neighbours. This funding, in combination with monies raised at events, and generous donations from resi-dents and businesses, allows us to fully complete our “Park for all Ages.” We are very excited to have reached the “fundraising finish line!” It is anticipated that Phase 2 project construction will start the first week of July and be finished by the fall.

Additional CFEP Funding Received for Phase 2 project!

As reported in the last issue, we were recently awarded an addi-tional $42,000 in CFEP funding from the Province of Alberta in support of our Phase 2 project! This is in addition to the $70,000 in CFEP funding we received for Phase 2 in 2015. The Commu-nity Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) assists communities with construction, renovation or redevelopment of community public-use facilities, thereby helping enhance the quality of life and citizen well-being in communities across Alberta.

On May 13, Honourable Marlin Schmidt (MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar), presents a provincial CFEP cheque in the amount of $42,000 to Capilano Community Park Redevelopment Commit-tee members and community residents.

Thank you Fargos! On April 30, many families enjoyed the wonderful Family Day event held at Fargos! Children enjoyed the facepainting and the balloon animals, and we are pleased to report that over $200 was raised in support of Phase 2 of the Capilano Community Park Redevelop-ment project. Protecting Your Eyesight

Damaging UV Light From the SUNWe all know that ultraviolet rays can be harmful to our skin on hot summer days. However, what about our eyes?

Our precious eyesight can be af-fected in our later years if we do not take the correct steps in protecting them. It all starts at a very young age since most our sun exposure is during our adolescent years playing outdoors.

Sunglasses help to protect our eyes from the harmful UV rays emitted from the sun. To begin, UV light damages the eyes by giving us cataracts sooner in life. This can cause cloudy vision and glare at night. UV light also increases our chances of getting macular degen-eration. A disease of the retina that harms our central vision. Finally, we can also get yellowing/thicken-ing of the whites of our eyes. This is known as pinguecula and if the thickening gets worse growing over the cornea it can impair vision. At that point, it is called pterygium.

Sunglasses, either tinted or polar-ized lenses help by blocking UV light from reaching the eye. Even clear lenses can have UV light blocked by adding a UV protective coating to the lenses. For comfort and convenience, many people now wear transitional lenses. These lenses change depending on the amount of UV light exposure. The brighter it is, the darker they get.

Welcome New Holyrood Board!

Fun was in the air again at the Holyrood Community League’s Annual General Meeting on April 28th . Another stellar turnout of community members enjoyed a bit of wine, a few snacks and some inspired volunteer recognition - and even elected several new board members in the process.

We’d like to give a warm welcome to new directors Jessica Young (Treasurer), Marjorie Brese (Secretary), Dave Sutherland (Director at Large – Civics), and Bette Yelich (Director at Large).

A hearty “thanks” goes to outgoing Programs Director Patty Schultz. Retiring Treasurer Darcie Johnson was also recognized for her invaluable contribution to the league over the past several years. She was presented with a special Holyrood sash filled with “merit badges”, reminding her of the many skills she’s built during her time on the board.

By the time this edition of the South East Voice is de-livered, we’ll already have celebrated our event of the season, the “Holyrood Hose Down” spray park grand opening and mural unveiling on Saturday, June 4th.

With our spray running, bike bumps calling and Green Shack leader ready with activities, Holyrood Park should be a great place to hang out this summer. We are especially excited to have water on those hot summer days - finally!

Don’t forget to take a break to admire our beautiful, colourful new mural recognizing all those who have helped make Holyrood’s park so fabulous!

Holyrood Haul-Away was a success again this year and we took advantage of the great weather to do some landscaping at our hall!

HOLYROOD Soccer Coordinators Needed

This spring there were 158 children registered in Holy-rood to play soccer.

This would not have been possible without our wonder-ful soccer coordinators, Katrina Radeka and Teara Lapp. Also thanks to our many coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, and all other parentsthat worked behind the scenes to have our children out there on the fields having fun.

After many years of volunteering, both Katrina and Teara are stepping down.

Holyrood will not be able to offer future indoor or outdoor soccer programs without new coordinators step-ping forward.

Responsibilities include; attending monthly meetings at the S.E Soccer Centre. Planning and organizing outdoor registrations and volunteers. Training, organizing and keeping coaches informed of upcoming events. Manag-ing a budget, the equipment and organizing the teams. Answering emails and working alongside the HCL Programs Director.

We know this sounds like a lot, however if there are several people interested, these responsibilities can be shared.

For further details contact Katrina at [email protected] orJustine at [email protected]

Helping Ft. McMurrayOn May 7, I held a donation drive for the evacuees of Fort Mac. I delivered 500 flyers and Kenilworth re-ally came through! Thanks to you, I collected almost 40 boxes of donations. My Mom’s truck was full of donations that went to the Pet Reunification Centre. My grandpa’s truck was full of donations for the Emergency Relief Centre. it really felt great to be able to help the people of Fort McMurray, and meet some neighbours too.

Mark your calendars! This year, our annual general meeting is June 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Juniper Cafe and Bistro (9514 87 St.). Stop by to learn how you can get involved with the commu-nity league, to see an overview of plans for the new hall and to enjoy snacks and drinks with your neighbours.

Founder of Strathearn soccer program retires from board

Keith Furneaux saw how soccer brought neighbours together. So, in 2006 he pitched the idea of forming a soccer program in Strathearn, becoming the com-munity league’s first soccer director. Ten years later, he’s stepping down from the board to make room for others to volunteer. We caught up with Keith (who has also been president and vice-president and has been managing our casino fundraisers) to talk about his experience helping build community on and off the soccer field.

Neither of my sons ever played soccer for Strat-hearn. I was involved in soccer in Riverdale, coach-ing and helping the director there for five years. I enjoyed it. I saw what it did in Riverdale. I wanted Strathearn to have a soccer program.

Youth sports, soccer especially, brings a lot of people out and they meet their neighbours. I think that they may have had passing acquaintances, but you get to know them better on the side of the soc-cer field. To me, it’s a really important part of community.

That first year, we had one U6 and one U8 team. That’s been about our average. We had a U10 team. For a while we sponsored a premier team, girls U16, U18.

I was president when Strathearn Heights did the first presentation to city hall on the DC2, which was accepted. There was great opposition from the community. Subsequently, we’ve improved relations with Strathearn Heights. I think working together has worked out a lot better than working against them.

I’m stepping down from vice-presidency to give room for someone else to step in for suc-cession because Jenny [McAlister] is only president for one more year.

I don’t know how I’ll stay involved. I may remain active with the Strathearn Building Society.

There’s a huge payback: the sense of accomplishment, the sense of community that you help to build.

The other thing I would say is don’t be afraid to try something new because there’s always someone there who’s done it and you’ll get a ton of help.

Strathearn Art Walk: Call for artists

We’re looking for artists and crafters to show and sell their work at the fifth annual Strathearn Art Walk on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. To register, visit our new website at strathearnartwalk.com.Last year’s Strathearn Art Walk attracted 120 artists, crafters and musicians and more than 1,000 visitors — and we want to make this year’s event even bigger! The cost for each artist is $50. This will guarantee each artist a spot, a table and a chair. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there!

Summer outdoor pool schedule

Edmonton has four city-operated outdoor pools and your Strathearn Community League membership allows you several opportunities to swim for free at these facilities all summer long. Strathearn Community League members can swim for free every night (except statutory holi-days) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mill Creek Outdoor Pool. Free swim is also available at the follow-ing times and locations:• Fred Broadstock Pool: Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.• Queen Elizabeth Pool (starting June 1): Sundays 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., Mon-days 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Tuesdays 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., Wednesdays 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.• Oliver Pool (starting June 12): Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Green Shack ShakerOnce again Strathearn playground (Silver Heights Park) will host a city Green Shack program. This free, drop-in program will be available weekday mornings all summer long from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is aimed at children aged six to 12. For a chance to meet your program leader, join us on June 28 (the last day of school!) for our fifth annual Green Shack Shaker. Food, music, entertainment and general frivolity kick off at 5 p.m. and continue until the sun goes down. Get your face painted, check out a fire truck up close, play some games and meet your neighbours at this rowdy community event. Hope to see you there! Demo Days

Would you like to learn to dance like they do in Bollywood films? What about learning some of the finer points of rugby? Lacrosse? Your Strathearn Community League wants to give you the opportunity to try something new in your community with your family, friends and neighbours. Periodically through the summer, we’ll have a community organization join us to show off their skills, teach us some new moves and have fun. If you participate in an activity that you think your neighbours would enjoy trying, please contact Strathearn Community League program director Andrew Struthers ([email protected]) to set up a date and time. Stay tuned to our social media accounts and our website for dates and times of events.

Wired WednesdayJune 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at The Wired Cup (9418 91 St.).Strathearn Community League members enjoy a free coffee or tea on the community league the first Wednesday of the month at The Wired Cup.
