SA pupils win International Kids Literary Quiz

Many of our readers who return to SA tell us it's because the education is still first class. This story bears witness to this theory. In July last year, Manor Gardens Primary School from Durban sent a team 2011 to International Kids Literary Quiz in New Zealand and won! The team aged between 10 and 13 took on teams from UK, US, Canada and New Zealand and triumphed. Well done.

SA economic growth positiveMerril Lynch reported in September that over the next 10 years SA looks set to lead the economic growth in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).

"Based on an analysis of growth determinants from demographics to leverage, we conclude that this decade Turkey, South Africa and Saudi Arabia will improve their growth performance," the bank says. New arms deal inquiry welcomedIn September a highly popular move, Zuma announced that there would be a new inquiry into the massively controversial arms deal. Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille asked Zuma to appoint a retired Constitutional Court judge to adjudicate the proceedings. "I appeal to the commission to call on and make provision for all persons with information to give evidence in public," she said in a statement.

UCT Scientists purify toxic waterIn July it was announced that UCT scientists had found an environmentally friendly way of purifying highly toxic waste water, rendering it 'completely drinkable'. Called eutectic freeze crystallisation, the technique freezes acidic water, or brine, to produce potable or drinking water as well as useful salts, such as sodium and calcium sulphate. The method could drastically reduce the impact industry has on water supplies the world over.

by STAFF REPORTERIN his speech to the ANC Centenary celebrations, Jacob Zuma warned against factionalism and "political demons" within the party. He told the rally that the most urgent task was to 'speed up the building of a national democratic society.'

The speech comes in the wake of scandal, where ANC youth leader Julius Malema was reported in the Saturday Star as having called the ANC leadership 'baboons'. ANCYL, claimed his speech was misrepresented.

The youth league's dismissal comes after Malema was quoted by the Saturday Star as saying at a mini rally: "The people that did not want us here, they are baboons.... but the baboons, they didn't know how we work -that we have ways to get to our people."

"ANCYL president addressed the rally in sePedi and the journalist who wrote the story does not have even the slightest understanding of the language the president was using," spokesman Floyd Shivambu said in a statement on Saturday.

The 1.27-million member party has taken criticism surrounding poor service delivery, cronyism

and infighting. Zuma called for all South Africans to "enjoy an improved quality of life, especially the working class and poor".

He said the ANC needed to take "urgent steps to restore core values, stamp out factionalism and promote political discipline".

by STAFF REPORTERIT was reported in IOL that pastor and DJ Reverend Kemo Immanuel Waters tweeted on the weekend that white people should be killed. He Tweeted that Helen Zille of the opposition DA should be amongst them.

The reverend describes himself on his Twitter profile as preacher, author, poet, father and truth seeker.’ At 1.33am, the reverend wrote: “The only way to end racism is to kill a material number of whites. @helenzille your indifferent and patronizing stance is a double dare…”

Speculation that this was

potentially a drunken Tweet were quashed, when the Reverend refused to apologise later on Facebook. In response to the Twitter uproar he said: “You missed the gist of my msg… which is the only time a black man is afforded a

dignified audience is when he pulls a gun.”

Since his rant on Saturday, Waters has received many death threats. Zille said the tweet was hate speech and that she would be laying charges against Waters.

The final dance of DewaniGIVEN the fact that 2011 was about one of the most mental years in the history of the world, ever, you’d almost be forgiven for wanting a quiet 2012. Perhaps you’d settle for a quiet January: a brief, cold period where the world slows downs, recalibrates itself, shakes off the hangover.

But then you will read about the Shrien Dewani coming to its conclusion, and you’ll get the feeling you’re in for a long year.

To be fair, it looks like this really is the final movement in a dance between Dewani and the South African government that began its first steps over a year ago, on a dark township street in Gugulethu. Dewani has reached

his final appeal. If he loses this one – which came after the Home Secretary approved the request of the SA government to have him extradited – he will be brought to SA to stand trial for the murder of his wife, within hours of touching down at Cape Town International, if reports are to be believed.It seems odd to think that

Dewani’s actual trial has yet to begin. He has been in and out of court dozens of times. Hundreds of legal documents and news reports, analysing every part of

that night have been written, pored over, rewritten, subjected to inquiry and thrown out.

He has been ruled mentally ill and suicidal (and for those who doubt this, no less a legal mind than Judge Howard Riddle said in his most recent summing-up that he accepts this). But if there is to be a verdict – a final, do-not-pass-go verdict – then it will be months, possibly years, before it happens.

So expect a crazy January. And possibly a crazy February, March and April, too. Here’s to 2012 – and maybe, just maybe, seeing the back of Dewani.

by JOHN MCCABEJEREMY Taylor started at St Bartholomew’s Grammar School in Berkshire and read modern languages at Oxford. Add to that, success in the West End with Wait a Minim, a series on BBC2, collaborations with Spike Milligan, writing for Cat Stevens and Miriam Makeba and you realise he has been an exceptional creative force in the UK.

Yet that almost feels surreal to those of us who have always considered him as South African as blatjang en geel perskes. It is because Jeremy wrote himself into our hearts 50 years ago with a song that set South Africa alight at the time; it became a massive hit, selling more than any Elvis Presley single at the time.

Who can ever forget “The Ballad of the Southern Suburbs” or ‘Ag Pleez Deddy’ as it quickly became affectionately known? Sadly the government of the time disapproved and ordered the SABC to ban the song. Jeremy was probably considered as a forerunner of the Rooi Gevaar and eventually was banished from South Africa.

Fortunately that’s all been relegated to history and ‘Ag Pleez Deddy’ survived and continued to flourish. Also Jeremy has been welcomed back. He described the reaction when he sings it to South African audiences now. “When I sang it there recently it was absolutely stunning, the emotion it evoked,

people were in tears. It is not the sort of song that you would think would provoke tears, but time has given it that quality, it takes people back to their childhood and it is a very moving experience.”

Jeremy was invited back to South Africa last year by Chevrolet, mentioned in the song, to support them in their centenary celebrations and to help launch some new models. Jeremy and his wife now live in the Loire Valley, France. “I am a pensioner now, but I guess I never really will retire because as long as your health holds up you keep going.’’

Plans are afoot for a big tour in South Africa this year.

Ag Jislaaik Deddy, you’re 50!

AS columnists we are often expected to write articles weeks before publication, especially over Christmas and New Year. Sitting here in South Africa, in the holiday mode of excess, sun, beach and Cape cafes, I have to remember that when you read this, I will be back in London, post Christmas Cheer and post festivities.

If there are two grim reasons for not living in on Mud Island it’s January and February. Cabin fever is not just for Moose Hunters in the Canadian outback, but a real and yet to be registered NHS certifiable disease. People turn funny colours for lack of Vitamin D and direct sunlight. Now that everyone has indulged, the lean fridge is a reminder of how lean our souls are at this time of the year. Do you know anyone who is wildly excited in January?

January is when most dwellers are seriously starting to look rather Voldemortesque avec alabaster lustre. For those of us fortunate to have flown south for the holidays, the tan is fighting a losing battle in the pale trenches and will soon turn a ghastly nondescript pallor. Be

aware of short term memory loss, early signs of dementia and fixation syndrome of the ‘when we were in South Africa

syndrome.’ Locals do not care. You may even begin to question your sanity, swapping the lifestyle and perpetual summer of home for this...

Watching South Africans boarding for London at the end of Christmas with family is a tragic experience. Groot manne huil. Dead people walking through security, their brains and hearts lead with grief at the leaving. The flight is silent, gray, thick with questions and hurting. Why comes to mind?

Because you can. Despite the few dark months, London is the most exciting city

to live in. England still one of the most beautiful to explore. Europe lies like a close cousin. You will experience life on a level only dreamt of by those left behind. Speak to most

and they will say that going to London is a wish still waiting; they do not think of the dark. The drastic change of seasons is one of the things I love about the northern lifestyle, one minute plunged into black and then the first signs of daffodils. OK, hit and miss Summer but when it hits, hello beautiful!

And you get to go back. And back again. I chose both. Today, as I write, I am on the beach in Cape Town. Been on a game farm in the Free State, the valleys of Natal and in between. The leaving will be brutal, but in the leaving I know, I will get through the dark and, like a fickle lover, Starbucks in hand – be utterly in love with London.

He does his best to make a joke about it, but you can see he's gobsmacked. Can you imagine what that sounds like to the Swiss? It's like telling a man from Kwazulu Natal: 'I only saw beach sand after I left varsity.' And somewhere in this story lies the secret to why Davos Klosters is ideal for South Africans. It's about the search for the spirit of the Alps. The Swiss don't 'do' Alpine, they simply 'are' Alpine. It's a subtle difference, but one you'll come to love when you look back on an unforgettable skiing holiday. There's a very good reason Prince Charles and the equine Saxe-Coburgs come back every year, they have a nose for authenticity.

Davos Klosters is not the swankiest, or the most expensive, or even most glam. But it is the benchmark for authentic Alpine experiences in Europe. Now to some, this may seem like a dull aspiration when there are much sexier options such as Courchevel, Cortina d’Ampezzo or St Moritz. However, if (like our SA staff) you find the above names scary budgetwise, but have become sick of cheap Euro resorts stuffed with nouveau-rude assholes, we suspect you’ll find it a relief to be told where to find the genuine Alpine experience.

traditional Swiss village just round the mountain from Davos centre, with carved front wood chalets and the kind of sparkling snow-covered charm you’d expect from an Alpine village.

If you’ve a family and want to keep everything manageable this place really works. Everything is within strolling distance and when you’re tired from skiing that’s a huge bonus.

Davos - balance between traditional and 'tres chic'Davos is a larger centre with a population of about 13 000. It’s dotted with international boutiques and traditional stores and the nightlife is vibey enough to sustain even the most adventurous après skier. If you come in December you’ll find a Christmas market in the main square, which is unpretentious and best experienced through a good Glühwein buzz.

BUSINESS IN BRIEFSA on right track to moderate Europe fallout – IMFIMF chief Christine Lagarde, says South African authorities are alert about risks and their policies are on track. Lagarde, managing director of the IMF, said on Friday in Pretoria that countries have to be alert to possible contagion or spill-over from the beleaguered Eurozone.

“This is something that is being done by the South African authorities,” she said after a meeting with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in the capital city. She also commended South Africa’s attention on labour-intensive activities to promote job-creating growth.

Nedbank to report accelerated growthTURNAROUND of their retail operation augurs a rise in earnings this year. SA’s fourth-largest retail bank reports year-end results at the end of next month, and the results look to be encouraging analysts say. Online Shopping Booming in SAACCORDING to a new report by World Wide Worx (WWW), South Africans spent R2.6bn online last year, 30% more than in 2010, a figure which could rise to 40% by the end of the year.

by STAFF REPORTEREFFECTIVE as of last week the ministry of finance banned the import of undergarments.

You are not allowed to import: “articles of second-hand undergarments of any type, form or description, whether purchased, donated or procured in any other manner.”

Many Zimbabweans do their clothes shopping via informal traders who import from China and India. In his 2012 National Budget statement, Finance Minister Tendai Biti told Parliament the continued importation of second-hand undergarments was unacceptable.

“I am told we are now even importing women’s underwear in this country. How does that happen? If you are a husband and you see your wife buying underwear from the flea market, you would have failed,” he said.

“If I was your in-law, I would take my daughter and urge you to first put your house in order if you still want her back.”

Zimbabwe follows Ghana who banned the importation in 2010.

Air Zim Flights Halted

by STAFF REPORTER AFTER months of crippling challenges such as pilot strikes and debt collector's demands, Air Zimbabwe has suspended its flight to the UK as well as to JHB. Management has cited financial crisis as the cause after their 767 was impounded at Gatwick over an outstanding debt of £780,000 ($1.2million) to a U.S. parts supplier. A second aircraft had already been impounded earlier in December. The amount was paid on Christmas day, but management has said it would no longer risk further impounds by frustrated creditors.

Radio VoP news website reported: 'The Minister of Transport and Communications, Nicholas Goche, has issued a circular to stop Air Zimbabwe management from flying its

aircraft to South Africa and the United Kingdom where one of its long haul Boeing 767 aircraft was recently impounded over an outstanding debt.'

Sources at Air Zimbabwe said that the move was taken after Robert Mugabe almost missed his Middle East Holiday because the plane was impounded. It was reported that he was forced to charter a plane specially and was unhappy with the situation.

The grounding couldn't come at a worse time for the airline, who were looking to recoup some of their debt via Zimbabweans making it back to the UK and SA after season.

Airline experts have said not many airlines can ever survive such a blow to passenger confidence, particularly when safety was at stake.

Tourist survives after bungee cord breaks at Vic Falls

by STAFF REPORTERERIN Langworthy wanted to usher in 2012 with an adrenaline rush at Vic Falls, but she got far more than she bargained for after her bungee cord snapped on the way down.

The 22-year-old Australian was on holiday on New Years Eve when she took the 111-metre bungee jump from the Victoria Falls bridge above the river, plunging her head-first into the raging crocodile-infested waters of the Zambezi River.

Langworthy suffered a fractured collar bone as well as massive bruising in the accident and was taken to South Africa for treatment.

“Yes, I think it’s definitely a miracle that I survived,” she told Australia’s Channel Nine.

by GORDON GLYN-JONESWhen did you make the UK your home?Well, it’s debatable whether it is my home. I’ve been living here with my family since 2005. Investec expanded here in 1998 and I used to fly up and down between the two places. Eventually, we were attacking the world from London, so more time was sucked in here. I still have a home in South Africa and I go back virtually every month. So I haven’t ‘left’ South Africa in that sense.

And from a business perspective?It was necessary for us to come to London because it’s the largest conglomeration of money managers in the world. Therefore you have better opportunities of touching and seeing clients who come here looking for people to engage them. London was a commercially logical opportunity for us, a little like the SA breweries, who just couldn’t do what they did from Johannesburg. Increasingly though, the way technology is evolving, you will be able to do business anywhere as the world. I guess my grandchildren will not understand why I had to come here.

How valuable are South African business people with connections in both SA and UK?It’s a model I’d very much like to like to encourage. I think the idealistic notion of a ‘truly international person’ doesn’t work, because you don’t know where you come from, or where you’re going.

I think UK locals still think that people who come to London from developing countries have fled. That’s mostly not true anymore. It’s not the refugees who pitch up here. People come here because

they want to be part of the melting pot. The really smart ones, particularly the Chinese, retain the contact and are absolutely in the driving seat, as they can play both sides and are quite clear about their identities.

What were the biggest challenges you faced moving here?Although people are very accommodating to South Africans in London, in the City it was seen as: ‘you’re not going to make it to the first beat; how committed are you?’ There was huge cynicism to deal with. So that’s why we had to move physically. We said: ‘No, we live here now, if we fail, we fail with you.’ The beautiful thing about the City

of London is that it actually looks past ethnic, religious, or whatever orientation. It just looks if you can provide what they need at the right quality.

Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror and think, I’ve made it?No, because that’s the beauty of

competitive industries, you never make it. I have a poster by Nike, of a guy running and it says: ‘There’s no finish line’. That’s what this business is, you can opt out but once you’re in it, you’ve never ‘made it’. So definitely not,

on the contrary, in London I keep on meeting people who have done so much, not financially, that have used their time so much better, I’m constantly humbled and almost embarrassed by what I’ve done with my chances. That’s the good thing about being in a competitive industry, there’s no time for slacking.

What makes you a success within Investec? Determination, that’s the most

important thing in an environment of lots of talented, smart people. It’s all about a mind-set. The way the French rugby team came into the final of the world cup; they weren’t going to be pushed around. They weren’t the best team, but they almost did it. You can learn determination anywhere; you can learn that in a small village in Zimbabwe, when you have to walk to school long distances every day.

Your company is entrusted with billions of other people’s money. How is the pressure of that responsibility?We are not in a traditional

business. We don’t sell beer or sell riches and we actually take responsibility or part-responsibility in a supply chain for other people’s financial future. I spend a great deal of time trying to explain this

to people in house. It’s not just their careers, it’s actually

their uncle’s or your aunt’s money. If you’re irresponsible or you make a mistake, you’ve crossed honest people who’ve worked hard.

This industry, by and large, it is not as transactional with its clients as other parts of the financial services,

who have recently been collecting flack

for their behaviour, but it’s not

perfect by any means. However it’s nice to think that if you do the job well, you’ll make a few guys live better when they’re old.

What role do South Africans play in the future world economy?I was very excited when I went to the SA embassy recently. There were two guest speakers called “Will-I-Am”, the singer. And he said his dream as a creative person, (he’s not a businessman but obviously very sharp), was to see the next Sergey Brin from Google, or Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook to come out of Africa and it is indeed possible. If they’re

international enough and open-minded enough, they’ll be able to link into a supply chain. The message for Southern Africans is that if you’ve got a really good idea, if you’re competitive at something and if you’re open-minded, which probably means having spent some time outside your home country, you can go back to your home country and build a very good business. Or, you can do it in another country and you can then in-source from your own country because you know better, you can negotiate better, you can deal better To see the full interview go to

If sold, the sellers will receive the full face value of their tickets. If the tickets remain unsold by 3

February, they will be returned to the ticket-holder's account. Police have warned it is a criminal offence to resell London 2012 tickets on the open market without the permission of Locog. There will be a further chance to resell tickets from April 2012.

Louis Oosthuizen Wins the Africa Open

by STAFF REPORTERDEFENDING champion Louis Oosthuizen (and former British open champ) held off a determined effort from Tjaart van der Walt to win the Africa Open, a co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour event, at East London Golf Club on Sunday 08 Jan.

Oosthuizen finished with an amazing 27 under par, with a final score of 67, which meant he enjoyed a two-shot victory.

“I tried my best to keep him (Van der Walt) under pressure, and I did,” Oosthuizen said.

“At a stage there, if I missed one or two putts, I was behind.

“He (van der Walt) played unbelievably, and it’s nice seeing him in form again.”

For Van der Walt, the turning point in the match was on the par three 17th hole, where the two were still neck and neck at the Tee. He left his approach a little short of the green while Oosthuizen found the green, some 35 feet from the hole.

Van der Walt didn’t make his par and Oosthuizen slammed in a birdie to forge ahead by two shots going into the last hole. Both players scored a par on the 18th giving Oos the win.

“It was tight. Unfortunately Tjaart made that bogey on 17

and I made my putt which made the difference,” Oosthuizen was quoted by IOL.

“All in all I’m very happy – my first tournament of the season and I can’t ask for more.”

THE win moves Sarries to within three points of leaders Harlequins as the

squad now heads out to Cape Town for a week of warm weather training ahead of next weekend’s Heineken Cup clash against Biarritz.

Tries from Captain Steve Borthwick and Chris Wyles in each half, along with 16 points from the boot of Owen Farrell, gave Saracens the victory. Bath started the game brightly and within five minutes had crossed the line. Stephen Donald spotted a gap in the Sarries defensive line-up and crossed the line from 10 metres out. He added the extras himself.

penalty hit the post before the home side lost Rhys Gill to the sin bin with referee Pascal Gauzere losing patience at the scrum.

It was while the home side were down to 14 men that they scored a try. A lovely flowing move went the length of the pitch before David Strettle cut a great line to unlock the Bath defence. He was stopped short of the line but Captain Steve Borthwick was on hand to power over for only his second try in a Saracens shirt.

Donald then struck a long range effort before two Farrell kicks put Sarries into the lead at the interval. Farrell extended that lead as Sarries enjoyed a bright start in the minutes after the restart. But replacement Tom Heathcote struck on the hour to make it a three

point game. Saracens scored their second

try of the game with 10 minutes remaining. After going through the phases on the Bath 22, Chris Wyles picked up the ball and evaded three defenders before crossing the line. Farrell converted.

Heathcote’s second penalty of the match pulled the visitors back to within seven points with six minutes left on the clock, but Farrell struck again with two minutes remaining.
