hoisted a pint-sized,dark-haired toddler
onto his lap in front
of his popular weekly va rietyprogram's millions of viewers and
introduced her as "the youn gestOsmond Brother." Although he
already knewof her brothers'amazing talellls from their regular
appearances on his show , Williamswas little aware that this same girl
wo uld grow up to become one of
quickly answered yes , and the restis history. The result of thiscollabora tion was Marie's first
record, "Paper Roses". which
quickly rose to number one on theBillboa rd char t. The song, released
just a few days afte r Ma rie's 13th
birthd ay, marked the first time in
country music history that a femaleartist had reached the number one
chart position with a debut record.
It wasn't long before Marie hit theroad as part of her broth ers' show.

In the 1950's, VinccnI Oonehue. a well- known Broadwa y
director was in LosAngeles dir ec ting a TV series. He was
app roached by Paramount Pictures with the idea of dir ec tin g theAmerican ve rsion ofa German film about the Von Trapp family ,
based on Baroness Von Trapp 's book of reminiscences , "TheTrapp Family Si nge rs." The "S ingers" were a pair of adults and
seven stair-step children who , from 193810 194;, were one of
themOst popu lar concert attraction s n America. Admiration
abo unded for the bea ut yand cha rm of their songs , and no one
gave much thought as to who th is German speaking famil y was
and where they came from . The truth that they we re penniless
exiles , driven from th ei r Austria n home by the Naz is and forced10 turn what had only been a joyo us ho bby into a profess ional
ski ll was unkn ow n at that tim e.

On an interest ing notc, while in Boston a flaw was discovered
that cou ld have ru ined the entire enterprise. In rea l life and in
the musical. the Von Trapp famil y did li ve wit h the spectre of the
Nazi threat in Austria in the late 19.O's. whic h did . in the end .ca use them to fl ee the CO lll1!r)' when Hit ler's legions invaded. Tointroduce this into the show it se lf would com pletely change the
atm osphere of the show . If a single Naz i soldier were to appea r
on stage, it would no longer bea lovely, romantic , and inspiring
piece - the charm would co mpl etelydisa ppear . In the end . it
was decided tha t the Nazi influence wo uld be felt , but alwa ys
off- stage. Somehow this heightened the menace of the Nazis,
but did not des tro y the bea uty of the show.

OKLAHOMA! , and the Golden

anniversary. Eight of the nine musicals
Rodgers & Hamm erstein wrote for
Broadway opened on the fabled block of
44 th Street in th e th ea ter district , and so
th e City of New York renam ed that street
"Rodge rs & Hamm erstein Row". Even
th e U.S. Postal Service go t in on the actby issuing a specia l commemorative
stamp for OKLAHOMA! th e first tim e a

Prior to his work with Hamm erste in ,
Richard Rodgers (1902-1979)
collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on

Broadwa y, in London and in Hollywood
