ig Bands on a big stage—jazz is at home in concert halls world-wide, including here at The Soraya. But that’s only part of

the story. Some of the best jazz expe-riences can be found in small clubs, with only inches between you and the artists. The intimacy and intensity is unmatched. The immersive sound of the ensemble and every expression of the lead vocalist can’t be missed.

Clubs are not just for beginners. They are a vital part of the jazz tradi-tion. Greats of every generation return to their favorite spots throughout their lives to connect with their audience and to experiment with new music.

The Soraya launched its own Jazz Club this year, transforming the stage into an inti-mate space for 225 people. We reached for the stars, inviting Cécile McLorin Salvant and Terence Blanchard to headline our new Club in April and May. Iraqi-American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar adds an international flare with his Two Rivers Ensemble.

While growing up, I enjoyed watching Bollywood movies, and I became an enthusiastic

bhangra dancer. Bhangra is a form of folk dance from Punjab, India. I even had the opportunity to perform bhangra, during my time in high school. Later, I graduated from CSUN, with both my B.S. in Health Administration and M.B.A., and was the first in my family to attain a college degree. Shortly thereafter, I began my career at CSUN in finance/budgeting. I can truly say that CSUN is my second home!

My career took a turning point last year when I started working at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Perform-ing Arts as a financial analyst. Having worked for more than 10 years in the University’s academic resources and budgeting division, I found great challenge and reward in improving The Soraya’s financial and operating model. Working behind the scenes and assisting management with fiscal year budgeting and forecasting are a few of the exciting, yet invigorating tasks I perform. I engage with sub-departments in the organization, in order to meet financial and strategic goals. Although each department fiscally operates different-ly, seeing the “bigger picture” and gauging financial health, without sacrificing quality, are opportunities and challenges I look forward to every day.

The Soraya has a great collective teamwork-style. And our 2017-18 Music Knows No Borders campaign is a testament to diversity by presenting exceptional artists from around the globe and emphasizing the true value of arts and culture. This is why The Soraya is a jewel of the Valley.

The MILES ELECTRIC BAND is a chang-ing musical ensemble of world-class talents featuring performances from a unique roster of players. The band revisits the repertoire from Davis’ electric period as a framework for modern jazz innovation. Tonight’s lineup at The Soraya includes on piano two Grammy nominees John Beasley and Robert Irving III, Debasish Chaudhury on tabla, David Gilmore on guitar, known for his work on Wayne Shorter’s Grammy Award-winning album High Life, noted percussionist Munyungo Jackson, and Grammy winner Vince Wilburn, Jr., Davis’ nephew, on drums. Also filling essential roles in the cast are bassist Darryl Jones, recognized for his recordings with Sting and decades long tour duty on bass for the Rolling Stones, Antoine Roney on saxo-phone who has toured the world with jazz veterans Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, and Christian Scott on trumpet.

Drawing upon the enormous pool of talent influenced through the decades by Miles Davis, trumpet duties by design are handled by special guest artists. In Chicago and Los Angeles, Grammy winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton was featured, and at Sunset Junction it was Grammy winner Wallace Roney, with oth-er jazz heavyweights set to join in the future.

Positive reviews have fueled demand for the ensemble. Of their debut performance during

the Miles Davis Festival in Chicago, Downbeat Magazine declared, “Despite boasting a host of bandleaders in the ranks, the group played with restraint and vibe over histrionics keep-ing the brew on simmer...” Of the Hollywood Bowl performance Daily Variety remarked, “Everyone rocked and socked, and it wasn’t nostalgic in the least.” The Los Angeles Times said, “The Miles Electric Band quickly pumped up a party vibe” noting the “festival friendly” material of Miles Davis’ electric period.

The Miles Electric Band is now a featured part of the Davis family’s plan to bring Miles Davis’ music to a new generation of music lovers through festival appearances and recordings. The June 2012 launch of the Miles Davis Forever postage stamp, which sold out immediately after its release, will ensure a certain awareness, as will the biopic Miles Ahead, starring Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle, with the original score featuring 11 essential tracks, five of which were written, co-written, produced, or performed by Gram-my winning jazz/hip hop artist Robert Glasper. The soundtrack to the film won a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Some of Miles Davis accolades include 8 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achieve-ment Award, and 10 GRAMMY Hall of Fame album inductions.

You are persistent, but sometimes spirits fail. You smile even if times are tough. You walk even when there is no fight left in you. This is a love song. For you.

6. V Garakuta-V 我楽多 ....................................................................................................................I’m just trash. No, I’m not angry. But even my tiny self has things I want to do. Things I want to tell people. I’ll show them what a small piece of trash is capable of.

Rakuda 楽打 ...................................................................................................................................It’s no exaggeration to say that Yamato couldn’t exist without performing this piece. Since the inclu-sion of this composition in our performances a few years after the group was formed, playing the drums has become more and more enjoyable. This particular playing style gives us a strong sense of unity with the drums, one that can’t be felt by beating Taiko drums that are placed on the ground. United with the drums, our existence as individuals gradually merges into a unified group. Thanks to the creation of this piece and its style, we have been able to travel all over the world, moving freely with our Taiko drums.

YAMATO was formed in 1993, debuting at a Shinto shrine festival in the group’s hometown with their original song “Hyu-ga” (The sunrise). Since then 25 years have passed. So far they have been invited to 54 countries around the world, playing more than 3,500 performances and attracting 7 million viewers. Their performances, featuring various stage formations, have received rave reviews; their fame keeps spreading, and the British media have even called their sound “the music of the body.” Yamato is based in a village called Asuka, known as the birthplace of Japanese culture, and appears in international performanc-es from 6 to 10 months a year with an explosion of Yamato (ancient Japanese) spirit. They are proud to be the group with the largest number of international performances among all Japanese performing arts groups.

We want to be Creative.

This is the motto of Yamato. This is why, aside from the musical instruments, the mem-bers of the group live together in a commu-nity to create everything by themselves. This includes the musical compositions, theatre productions, theatre settings, lighting design, choreography, performance techniques, cos-tumes, makeup, stage settings, and props...even the bachi (sticks) used in the performances are all their own original work. This is at the core of Yamato’s performances around the world. Yamato uses this creativity to convert wadai-ko into a performing art that reverberates in Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world.

Wadaiko has inspired many people since ancient times.

Yamato holds their respect for this tradition in their hearts as they continue to create and innovate within their art.

New York-based HARLEM QUARTET, currently serving a three-year residency at London’s Royal College of Music, has been praised for its “panache” by the New York Times and hailed in the Cincinnati Enquir-er for “bringing a new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing, and intelli-gent.” Since its public debut at Carnegie Hall in 2006, the quartet has thrilled audiences in 47 states as well as in the U.K., France, Belgium, Brazil, Panama, Canada, Venezuela, and South Africa. Harlem Quartet’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers. Passion for this work has made the quartet a leading ensemble in both educa-tional and community engagement perfor-mances. Alongside its regular activities as a chamber ensemble, Harlem Quartet performs a variety of works written for solo string quartet and orchestra. With the Chicago Sin-fonietta under Music Director Mei-Ann Chen, the quartet gave the world premiere of Leon-ard Bernstein’s West Side Story as arranged for string quartet and orchestra by Randall Craig Fleischer and recorded that arrange-ment, along with works for string quartet and orchestra by Michael Abels and Benjamin Lees, for the Cedille Records release Delights and Dances. The quartet’s recording career began in 2007 with Take the “A” Train, a release featuring the string quartet version of that jazz standard by Billy Strayhorn. A second CD, featuring three string quartets by Walter Piston, was released in 2010 by

Naxos. The quartet’s third recording, released in early 2011, is a collaboration with pianist Awadagin Pratt and showcases works by American composer Judith Lang Zaimont. More recently the quartet collaborated with jazz pianist Chick Corea in two recording projects, including a Grammy winning Hot House album that included Corea’s “Mozart Goes Dancing,” which won a separate Gram-my as Best Instrumental Composition.

Harlem Quartet was founded in 2006 by The Sphinx Organization, a national nonprof-it dedicated to building diversity in classical music and providing access to music educa-tion in underserved communities. The quartet is represented worldwide by Sciolino Artist Management www.samnyc.us.

CSUN’S SAMUEL GOLDBERG HONORS STRING QUARTET is named in recognition of the Samuel Goldberg Foundation for its long-time generous patronage, with special thanks to trustee Michael Levine for making the foundation’s annual gift possible. Substantial support for the quartet also comes from David and Gita Kronen.

The quartet members are enrolled in the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Com-munication’s Department of Music. With a career spanning more than 30 years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and conductor, JOSHUA BELL is one of the most celebrated violinists of his era, and his restless curiosity, passion, and multi-faceted musical interests are almost unparalleled in the world of classical music. Named the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 2011, he is the only person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958, and his contract was recent-ly renewed through 2020.

An exclusive Sony Classical artist, Bell has recorded more than 40 CDs garnering Gram-my, Mercury, Gramophone, and Echo Klassik awards and is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize. The Joshua Bell Virtual Reality video produced by Sony received a Lumiere Award. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields’ first release under Bell’s leadership, Beethoven

Symphonies No. 4 and 7, debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and was followed up by the critically acclaimed Bach. In 2016, Sony released Bell’s album For the Love of Brahms with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Jeremy Denk, followed in 2017 by the Joshua Bell Classical Collection, a 14 CD set of his Sony recording highlights from the past 20 years. Soon to be released is Bell’s recording with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields of Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and G minor Concerto.

Convinced of the value of music as a diplo-matic and educational tool, Bell participated in President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities’ first cultural mission to Cuba. He is also involved in Turnaround Arts, anoth-er project implemented by the Committee and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which provides arts education to low-per-forming elementary and middle schools.

Formed by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, the Acad-emy gave its first performance in its namesake church in November 1959. Through unrivaled live performances and a vast recording output—

highlights of which include the 1969 best-seller Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus—the Academy quickly gained an enviable international repu-tation for its distinctive, polished, and refined sound. MANUAL CINEMA is a performance collec-tive, design studio, and film/video production company founded in 2010 by Drew Dir, Sarah Fornace, Ben Kauffman, Julia Miller, and Kyle Vegter. Manual Cinema combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and innovative sound and music to create immersive stories for stage and screen. Outside of Manual Cinema, Sarah has worked as a performer or choreographer with Red-moon Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre Company, Court Theatre, Steppenwolf Garage, and Blair Thomas and Co. Most recently, Sarah wrote the story mode for the video game Rivals of Aether. In 2017, she directed and edited the first episode of the web series, The Doula is IN. In 2016, she directed and devised an “animo-tion” production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Rokoko Studios for HamletScen at Kromborg Castle in Elsinore, Denmark.

JULIA MILLER (Helen, Mask and Cat Puppet Designer, Co-Artistic Director) is a director, puppeteer, and puppet designer. Manual Cinema provides her with an outlet for many artistic impulses, including but not limited to breathing life into the inanimate, making delicate small things, and telling sto-

ries without words. In Chicago she has worked as a performer and puppeteer with Redmoon Theatre and Blair Thomas and Co. In 2017, she helped produce, direct, and edit episode two of the new web series The Doula is IN.

JEFFREY PASCHAL (Lucas) I’m originally from a town called Corning in Upstate New York. In 2012, I moved to Chicago to go to school at Northwestern University where I majored in Theatre. At Northwestern I was involved with several theatre productions including Fabulation, directed by Jerrell Hen-derson, and Anna in the Tropics, directed by Henry Godinez, as well as directing and pro-ducing several short films through the school’s RTVF program. I graduated from Northwest-ern with a B.S. in Theatre in 2016. Currently I am living in Chicago as an actor represented by Gray Talent Group.

MUSICIANSALEX BABBITT (Keyboard, Flute, Vo-

cals) is a multi-instrumentalist, filmmaker, performer, and educator. His wide array of interests has been explored through col-laborations with actors and filmmakers, musicians, and institutions such as INTUIT: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art and The Adler Planetarium. He currently sits on the board at the Friends of the Gamelan, Chicago’s Javanese Ensemble, and is working on a full-length album and video installation. For his acting endeavors he is represented by Brown Management group, and during the school year he works as a substitute teacher for Chicago Public Schools.

MAREN CELEST (Narration, Vocals, Live Sound Effects, Ukulele, MC Compa-ny Member) is a multi-disciplinary artist

and creator with a broad skill set, which she works to channel into many different outputs, including vocal work, musical composition, visual design, and writing. She is looking forward to releasing her first book and solo album in 2018. AYANNA WOODS (Guitar, Percussion, Vocals) is a composer, singer and multi-in-strumentalist from Chicago. She earned her BA in music composition from Yale University. Woods’ pieces have been performed by the Wet Ink Ensemble, members of Fifth House Ensemble, the Chicago Children’s Choir, and others. Her work as a writer and producer can be found in film scores for Revive LLC, in the viral web series Brown Girls, and in her own solo project, Yadda Yadda. She is a recipient of Third Coast Percussion’s 2017 Emerging Composers Partnership. Her music explores the spaces between acoustic and electronic, traditional and esoteric, wildly improvisational and mathematically rigorous.

DREW DIR (Screenplay and Story-boards, Puppet Designer, Co-Artistic Director) is a writer, director, and pup-pet designer. Previously he served as the Resident Dramaturg of Court Theatre and a lecturer in theater and performance studies at the University of Chicago. He holds a master’s degree in Text and Performance Studies from King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

ANDREA EVERMAN (Miniatures De-signer) enjoys making tedious things. After years of puppet making, costume design, and art education she’s focusing her efforts on designing process flows and service systems. Assembling small worlds out of thrift store junk was a welcome break from drawing diagrams.

KATE HARDIMAN (Stage Manager) is so excited to be working again with the wonderful folks at Manual Cinema. Kate is a Chicago-based theater artist working primar-ily with The Neo-Futurists, where she is the company’s Production and Facilities Manager. She also runs tech for The Neo-Futurists’ late night show The Infinite Wrench. Kate works regularly with Strawdog Theatre Company and Chicago Children’s Theatre. When she isn’t working on a show, Kate is a bike me-chanic at Uptown Bikes.

BEN KAUFFMAN (Lyrics, Music & Sound Designer, Co-Artistic Director) is a com-poser, director, interactive media artist, and co-Artistic Director of Manual Cinema. His work has been shown at The Jay Pritzker Pavilion (Chicago), The Peggy Notebaert Na-

ture Museum (Chicago), and CUNY’s Baruch College (NYC). He has lectured and given workshops at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York University, and Parsons The New School of Design. MIKE USREY (Production Manager, Sound Engineer) has mixed in around a hundred venues worldwide, ranging from large outdoor festivals to theaters and clubs. He toured internationally for three years with the band Dark Dark Dark (Minneapolis, MN) as front of house engineer. He has also toured with Pillars and Tongues (Chicago, IL), A Hawk and a Hacksaw (Albuquerque, NM), Royal Canoe (Winnipeg, MB Canada), and Pattern is Movement (Philadelphia, PA). He has been the front of house sound engineer for Manual Cinema since 2014.

MIEKA VAN DER PLOEG (Costume Design-er) has designed costumes for many Chicago theaters, including Lookingglass Theatre, Chica-go Shakespeare Theatre, The Hypocrites, Chica-go Children’s Theatre, About Face Theatre, The House Theatre, Next Theatre, Griffin Theatre, The Building Stage, Albany Park Theater Project, Dog and Pony Theatre, and Manual Cinema. A. MARTIN is the creator of Jazzical, a mar-riage of classical of jazz and more. In recent years he has collaborated with and/or written music for Grammy Award-winners Kathleen Battle, Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, cellist Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers, among many other artists. Martin was the youngest pianist ever, and the first African American pianist, to compete in the 1985 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has ap-

peared as soloist with the NY Philharmonic, El Paso Symphony, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, New Hampshire Festival Orchestra, Cab Callo-way Orchestra, and the Hartford Symphony. DR. DIANE WHITE-CLAY-TON—composer, soprano, pianist, choral conductor, workshop clinician, author, minister, and speaker—holds a Ph.D. and MA in Music Compo-sition from UC Santa Barbara and received her Bachelor of Arts in Music with honors from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. A highly ac-claimed performer of classical, gospel, and jazz, she has held positions at Grinnell College, Appalachian State Universi-ty, Westmont College, just to name a few. Affectionately known as “Dr. Dee,” she has two self-produced record-ings and several published compositions that have been performed across the globe. Diane serves as Choral Conductor at the 5,000-member Faithful Central Bible Church and is Artistic Director of the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers. She works as a Vocal Clini-cian for Disney Performing Arts and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Cali-fornia where she resides with her husband, accomplished R&B percussionist, Joe Clayton.

THE ALBERT MCNEIL JUBILEE SING-ERS OF LOS ANGELES (AMJS) focus their energies on fostering public awareness of the Negro Spiritual—to the broadest degree possible—and other vocal music created by African Americans, through classes, concert performances, workshops, and lecture-demonstrations. AMJS also desires

to educate the public about the direct (evolutionary) link between these genres of the African diaspora and blues, gospel, rock-n-roll, Soul/R&B, Hip Hop, jazz, and their influence on other American music genres in general.

The object in view assumes an exalted place: modern painting is a painting of the object. In it, Nature becomes a fragmented space, made of objects solitary and terrible because the links between them are only potential. Nobody chooses them for a privileged meaning, or a particular use, or some service; nobody imposes a hierarchy on them, nobody reduces them to the manifestation of a mental behavior, or of an intention, of some evidence of tender-ness. Bill Jehle (b. 1952, El Centro, CA) is the son of architect William Jehle and ceramicist/painter Marguerite. Jehle received his BFA from CalArts in 1974 and currently divides his time between Topanga Canyon and his cabin in Southern Colorado.

Jabber tells the story of a 16-year-old Egyptian girl whose parents transfer her to a new school when one morning some graffiti saying “All Muslims must die” is found on the school wall. At her new school she is the only person wearing a hijab.
