    military tribute Ceremony

National Sojourners’ efforts to recognize our Country’s military veterans and favor-ably increase Masonic visibility continues with “Lodge of Military Tribute Ceremony” presentations initial performances, which began on and around Veteran’s Day, and were most enthusiastically received. Chapters have indicated programs around George Washington’s Birthday as with our Country’s current patriotic outlook almost anytime is appropriate. Our copyrighted ceremony, to be presented only in Masonic lodges, is intended to be initiated by So-journer Chapters after their Grand Jurisdic-tion have approved it. Initial Grand Lodge response, which began in September, was most favorable but not all approvals have been received as action at the annual Grand Lodge Communication is required in some states. Grand Lodge approval status may be obtained by contacting National Secretary Newcombe, or implementation officer Chuck Folsom (402)721-3223, 449 West 10th Street, Fremont, NE 68025. Status may also be checked on the Command Post page of the Sojourners only area of our website. As state approval is received local action/implementation officers will be designated and necessary assistance will be provided. Veterans gift lapel pins (Forget-Me-Not for Masons – quality flag with Masonic Emblem stamped on the back for non-Masons) are available from National Headquarters. Presentation of these pins is mandatory as they are vital for effective Masonic visibility and impact both during the ceremony and refreshments (also mandatory) thereafter where lively and enlightening conversations about Masonry always occur. Ceremony scripts with instructions which in September were sent to all Chapter Secretaries, Area/Regional Representatives and National Officers at the same time all United States Grand Masters and Grand Secretaries received them, may be produced locally. The second printing of the Script, available from Brother Folsom for any of the above who inadvertently may not have received them. Remember, no matter how well this ceremony is presented it does not appro-priately benefit the potential recipients and our Masonic efforts unless the word gets out properly to everyone well in advance so they come. That means maximum repeated media announcements must be made. All veteran organizations. The Veterans Administration and all uniformed forces personnel and units, active duty and reserve must be personally contacted. Let’s all take due notice hereof and govern ourselves accordingly.

chapters in Proudly Serving the Cause of Patriotism. More often than not, however, their exciting and innovative Americanism and Bridge of Light (BOL) work goes unher-alded and the Brethren (and Ladies) who are the “movers and shakers” behind this work often never receive the Bravo Zulu’s they so richly deserve. Accordingly, I urge all who hold office in our Order at all levels to resolve to take time to make a list of the Chapters and individuals who should be recognized and singled out for their work and submit a timely award and incentive recommendation for each (properly pre-pared and staffed recommendations must reach the National Secretary by 31 March 2011). Refer to NR 9.1 and the Awards & Ci-tations Pamphlet (June 1999) for guidance.

Now is also the time for Chapter Leaders to resolve to begin developing their chap-ter’s plan to “Teach young Americans about America” and help strengthen the leader-ship skills of our youth through our Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) programs. I have outlined five easy steps to help you get your youth outreach program underway:

steP 1: Make a chapter commitment to participate in the program and send youth to a YLC! It is suggested that your chapter con-sider sponsoring at least one to a joint NS/MOWW regional YLC and one to the Spirit of America Youth Conference at Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. This is a KEY step --- your chapter must first establish a goal to participate and do it early enough to allow time to work the details…

steP 2: Appoint a chapter chair and/or committee! The chairman and/or committee will be responsible to the chapter President to follow through on the commitment, raise the funds, identify the students and make the arrangements.

steP 3: Raise the funds! Raising the requisite funds can be done if you start early enough. Here are some fund raising ideas: Call on the membership for a $25 dona-tion to the chapter’s youth education fund; seek Blue Lodge support for full or partial scholarships for local Masonic youth; and/or approach local civic groups and corpora-tions for support. Note that some chapters have had great success seeking support from local retail stores for matching grants of up to a $1000 (contact your National Americanism Chairman for details).

steP 4: Identify the students! Chapters have used many approaches to identify worthy student leaders and extend to them a YLC scholarship opportunity. Some simply look for first come first serve can-didates selected from family and friends of

Masons, Masonic Youth, local high school recommendations, ROTC and JR ROTC Units, Boy and Girl Scout organizations, etc. Others have developed a competitive selection process. Regardless of the selec-tion method used, there are many youth with great leadership potential worthy of our consideration!

steP 5: Reap Master’s Wages! Join with your chapter members in celebrating the successful accomplishment of that part of our purposes focused on “…supporting all patriotic aims and activities in Masonry, for developing true Patriotism and Ameri-canism throughout the Nation…” by hav-ing reached out to young Americans and provided them an opportunity to attend our YLC programs. It is suggested that chapter sponsored students who have completed a YLC Program be subsequently invited to a chapter meeting to give a report on their experiences at the YLC.

Finally, I encourage Chapter Officers to resolve to redouble their focus on BOL pro-grams. The BOL is a liaison, a bonding, an interweaving, a better understanding, and a friendship between National Sojourners and the rest of Freemasonry. BOL programs bring great visibility, relevance, respect, and even new members to our Order. Download a copy of the new improved BOL Handbook from the website and put your chapters program of outreach to the Craft in high gear! In a related effort, your National Fra-ternal Liaison Committee will again host a Fraternal Liaison Breakfast at the upcoming Conference of Grand Masters of Masons in North America (20 – 22 February 2011 in Denver, Colorado) during which your National Officers will brief selected Grand Lodge representatives on the many ways in which National Sojourners can serve the Craft.

In closing, if you haven’t already done so, I ask that you make your National So-journers New Year’s resolution—then follow through and deliver on your commitment. Join me in Propelling National Sojourners Forward—our individual and collective ac-tions will grow and strengthen our beloved Order. Continue to keep those propellers turning and make something good happen as we continue to work together in Proudly Serving the Cause of Patriotism!

    Fraternally,

    Harry

Dear Brother Sojourners,As I pen this National President’s mes-

sage, calendar year 2010 is all but over and the beginning of a new year of opportunity is just a few days away. Accordingly, it is a time to reflect and make resolutions, both individually and collectively, for continuing the process of Propelling National Sojourn-ers Forward!

By way of reflection, I encourage that you take some time to evaluate your individual contributions to the order in general and support for your chapter in particular over the past year. Each of you has the potential to make a difference --- relook at what you have done (or not done), where you can improve or be more effective, and resolve to do a little more for our Order in the year ahead! One suggestion (if you have not al-ready done so) is to earn the Propeller Club Award. Information about this prestigious incentive and other important programs may be found on the website. Resolve to register for the Sojourners Only section at www.nationalsojourners.org and get started im-mediately. Remember, making good things happen starts with YOU!

From a collective perspective, our Mid-Winter Meeting to be held 11 - 15 January 2011 in Greenville, South Carolina, will pro-vide a forum for reflection on our progress during the first 6 months of the 2010-2011 Sojourner Year. We will assess progress against our Strategic Plan, as well as, the goals and objectives I set for the Order and make “course” corrections as necessary. As of this writing, approximately 160 have registered for Mid-Winter Meeting which will be hosted by John Sevier Chapter No. 548 at the Embassy Suites Greenville Golf Resort & Conference Center.

Over the past 6 months, I have had the privilege of visiting 36 chapters, breaking bread with hundreds of Sojourners and their Ladies, and providing a presentation on key aspects of the plan for Propelling National Sojourners Forward against the backdrop of my theme: DUTY-HONOR-COUNTRY! During that time, I have developed a much greater appreciation for the quantity and quality of work performed by so many of our

Our November 2010 Meeting featured a very interesting talk by Ms. Glenys Waldman, Director of the Grand Lodge of Penna. Masonic Library, located at Masonic Temple in Philadelphia. Much of her talk covered Masonic literature and documents in the Library that pertain to activities of Masons during the major wars of our country, and especially the Revolution. She also briefly discussed the eleven Mili-tary Masonic Lodges that were active during the Revolution. For our November Meeting, we were honored with the presence of NP Harry Sanders, Jr. Twenty six Sojourners were among the total of 47 attending, in-cluding Ill. Bro Seamus McCaffrey 33deg. Associate Justice, Penna. Supreme Court. To recognize the Christmas/New Year’s Season, we were treated to musical en-tertainment by President Weisser and two members from his Mummers String Band who parade each New Year’s Day in Phila. We then all listened attentively to President Sanders’ stimulating slide/talk on the new program designed to “Propel National So-journers Forward”. During the talk, we had a chance to handle the huge Collingwood Gavel, made from a piece of 220 year old

chestnut oak tree originally on Washington’s River Farm, now part of Collingwood. At the close, we each contributed some financial support to this new program. Reports from the Meeting: * Our members collected $121 for the Grand Master’s “Help for the Heroes” Program. * A New Member for Chapter #16, Dennis Robinson 33deg. was sworn in by Nat’l Pres. Sanders. * Build-ing the Flag (BTF) – Three Presentations have been made by the BTF Team. * Bridge of Light (BOL) – Four Presentations made. * Winton Hewitt 33deg Past President, at the recent National Sojourners Meeting in Min-neapolis, was presented with a BOL Award Certificate and Flag Streamer.

The past couple of months have seen the Chapter exceed 500 in Total Membership, of which 459 are MIP. This year saw 36 ROTC Award presentations. We are grateful to all who participated in our charitable causes, including the Masonic Youth organizations, SEM Fund, National Sojourners Trust Fund, Collingwood, Masonic Homes of Kentucky, Food Baskets for the needy through the Army JROTC, and other programs. These actions have set the stage for another pro-ductive year in the New Year 2011.

Additionally, we hope this program will help us find qualified Ma-sons who can join National Sojourners. Our Chapter President reported that a study of recent membership statistics indicates that the Propeller Club has been a contributor to our membership increase. Several mem-bers of our chapter have joined the Propel-ler Club and we think several more will join.

national Commander’s message-Focus Point Four of Five: Ritual Work

    and Its Delivery

Greetings, Heroes! In previous issues of The Sojourner, Masonic Unity and Involve-ment, Leadership, and Membership were addressed. In this issue, the topic is our fourth focal point--heroes of ’76 Ritual Proficiency. Like other Masonic ritual, ours teaches valuable lessons to the recruit and to our members. Good ritual work also impresses the recruit and peers alike with the lessons, ritualistic skills, and fellowship derived from working together as a unit or team. Each of us has seen quality ritual work, and obtaining Heroes Ritual profi-ciency is our goal.

study: Obviously, ritual work does not simply jump off the page to be recited with perfection—it takes study and repetition. Some Brethren are naturally better at mem-ory work than others, but study improves everyone’s presentation. While inability to memorize is sometimes cited for not doing it well, the single most important discriminator in delivering good ritual work is the willing-ness to put forth the effort. Our Heroes Ritual says our participation is limited only by our desire to impress the recruit, who is later charged to commit a portion of our ritual to memory. By setting a higher stan-dard for ritual performance for the recruit, our new member automatically has higher expectations for his own performance, but unfortunately, the corollary is also true. Each of us is a link in the traditional Masonic ritual chain, and our quality work strengthens our Heroes chain. Remember, you are someone else’s example of a Mason or a Hero—be an excellent one!

Practice: First, practice is not study. Learn your particular section or lecture in a quiet place at home or on your own so that at a scheduled practice, you can deliver with minor prompting. Use degree practice to polish the fine points of your delivery or to emphasize to impress the recruit, not for learning the words. Also, degree practice helps everyone to understand the tempo and flow of the degree. The flow between sections, between and among each other, and various nuances. Our proficiency become rusty if not conducted for a period of time. Practice eliminates many of these

  • 10 the Sojourner jAnuArY-FeBruArY 2011

pitfalls, and then, when you have recruit ready to receive the degree, your memory work can shine.

delivery: The simple rule for ritual de-livery: stand up, speak up, and shut up. First, you should stand up and deliver. Many parts are delivered standing up, so do not sway from side to side or front to back, shuffle you feet, put your hands in your pockets, or other distracting gestures. If sitting, sit up straight and do not slouch. Second, speak up, enunciate, focus on the recruit, and talk directly to him. Emphasize key words, change your tone and speed of delivery, and do not talk in a monotone. You are part of a play, and there is drama, suspense, and education to be delivered. You should speak loud enough that every one in the room can hear you. This is louder than you would normally converse with the candidate in a discussion, but he may be blindfolded or otherwise distracted, and you want him to hear and focus what you have to say. Also, every other participant in the degree has a right and a desire to hear what is going on, so address them, too, although indirectly. Third, if you make a mistake, don’t apologize and don’t thank someone for giving you a helping word. Continue on and reestablish your flow. This “shut up” rule in a Brotherly way also applies to those not actively engaged in the ritual—remain quiet with no side discussions—unless it has meaning for the degree. One last point not to be lost, “No one can take your place if you are not there.” Once you have memorized the part, commit to be there and stand and deliver to support your camp.

importance of the Part: There are big parts and small parts, but there are no unimportant parts. Whether your part is a “Who Was It,” the Monitor Lecture, the Charge or any other part, it is essential and deserves your best. In addition, some parts must be memorized because they cannot be read due to other activities at the moment. Quality ritual is a Hero’s duty! As General Robert E. Lee said, “Duty then is the sublimest word in the English language. You should do your duty in all things. You can never do more, you should never wish to do less.” Lastly and associated with ritual presentations, we presented the Lodge of Military Tribute to the Midwest Conference of Grand Masters and the Omaha and Hast-ings Scottish Rite. The status of approval of this ritual ceremony honoring our nation’s Masonic and non-Masonic veterans is cov-ered elsewhere in The Sojourner.

national Convention: Speaking of Gen-eral Robert E. Lee, plan now to attend the National Convention in Richmond in June 2011. Richmond is a historic city, and we have a great location at the OMNI Hotel,

numerous restaurants within a short walk, the State Capitol two blocks away (a must-see), Maymont mansion, and shopping connected directly to the hotel. Decide now to attend our National Convention—you’ll be glad you did!!!

national Commander’s schedule: Lady Linda and I have attended and will attend many Area Encampments/meetings. Previous Encampments include SOCAL--twice; Pacific Northwest; Middle Central; and Pacific. Events included the Midwest Conference of Grand Masters and National Line, Trustees, and Collingwood meeting. Coming Area Encampments include Camel Corps; Middle Atlantic; Great Lakes; Cen-tral; and South Central. Coming events include Grand Lodge and York Rite; COG-MINA; our National Convention; and a Flag Presentation to the Nebraska Legislature. If your Area Encampment is not listed, please let me know immediately.

The Sentry discovered a ragged individual trying to infiltrate our camp. He was captured and taken to the Guard house, the Commander asked the Captain of the Guard what the commotion was about, the captain of the guard reported that the infiltrator claimed to be a Mason & Sojourner who wanted to join our camp. The captain of the guard thought it would be best to have the entire camp review his credentials. The Commander John Jones finding out that the infiltrator being of poor health and could not cross the big “D” begin to examine the infiltrator was found to have poor memory but after a grueling exam his memory was jogged to the point that the camps were convinced that he could be-come a worthy camp member. The camp members welcomed Steve A. Ridgeway as a Hero of ’76 in the Yorktown Camp.

Commander Tom Evans opened the Bivouac in the usual form for an open meet-ing then proceeded into the Retirement of National Flags program. Each Brother Hero had to make quite a few trips to the fire as there were about 100 flags to be retired. The Ceremony was held at the home of WB Lou and Ann Humphries who were great host and served all a picnic lunch after the ceremonies. It was a combination of serious business and then great fellowship for the 25 in attendance. Area Representative Bro. On 12 November three Past Command-ers of James Monroe Camp, Heroes of ‘76, and who are also Past Presidents of Fort Lee-Richmond #72, presented the “Building of the Flag” program to the residence of the Masonic Home of Virginia. These Heroes are shown from left to right, MW Frederick G Martin, III; Bros. James R Strait and Charles J Williams. This presentation was given to remember Veterans Day and all those who have served in the Armed Forces, as well as, to honor those veterans who reside at the Home, several of whom were in the assembly.

yorK CamP (harrisburg #76). Camp members had just settled down for rest when two barefoot and ragged excuses for humanity were found wandering near our camp site. Officer of the day Bro. Baumgardner presented these two indi-vidual before CC Rutt. They challenged the patience of our commander. Both lacked any proper identification and written or-ders. Their answers were extremely faulty causing frequent trips to the big “D”. Being more refreshed, their memory returned and both were found to be Bros. Robert H. Allen and Gene H. Anderson, Sojourners and were welcomed into our York Camp, Heroes of ’76.

    e. b. jones CamP (Kentucky #134). On 28 Aug 2010, the Camp held a bivouac at BOAZ Masonic Lodge #850, Louisville, KY. Our Recruit was Illustrious Bro. Virgil “Tom” Larimore, Grand Treasurer, Grand Lodge of Kentucky. The bivouac was under the direction of CC Ron Skipper, assisted by COS Ray Swanson, ACOS Joe Barany, OOD Mike Lile, and Adjutant Don Shaw, and several other brethren. Bro. Larimore expressed his pleasure at being selected for this honor.

john j. Pershing CamP (Pasadena #265). Recently, our Camp Commander, Steve Harris, held a meeting with the camp officers and other members of the camp. They discussed plans for the remaining time in the 2010-11 Sojourner year. Persh-ing Camp has had a very successful year, so far, and we expect to wrap up this year with our usual flair. Southern California Area has two encampments each year and Pershing Camp took a major role in both. We provided recruits for both encamp-ments and many members of our camp were participants in the two degrees. Every local member of our camp has a tri-corner hat and most of them have a jump suit with patches. Nine members have continental uniforms. Officers for the next Sojourner year, 2011-12, are already making plans for their year. They have said they want no derelicts lurking around the guard lines and they plan to do something about it. They are “of one mind” when it comes to discipline among the ranks.

(Portsmouth #386). Bro. Richard Asa Gilbert, Sr. Commander of General Wil-liam Whipple Camp opened the camp for a Bivouac. Shortly after the opening there was a commotion from the outer perim-eter. The Sentries having investigated the commotion found an individual by the name Philip Fraser stating he was a Mason and National Sojourner in good stand-

ing indicating that he wanted to join the Continental Army. After Bro. Fraser being interviewed by the Camp Commander, Bro. Richard A. Gilbert, Sr. and other He-roes of the camp present, and finding that because of his neglect to duty and being AWOL from his post the previous Tues-day Portsmouth #386 was not able to hold their regular meeting, being satisfied his neglect to duty was justified and his patri-otic intentions were in the best interest of the camp he was excepted as a Hero and new Recruit of General William Whipple Camp.

Hirst, Worshipful Past Master, Saint James Lodge No. 102 Hampton, New Hampshire.

georgia hussars CamP (hunter #502). 2010 has been the busiest year in recent memory for Georgia Hussars Camp. The year is finishing with the last bivouac with candidate, four Building the Flag programs and four parades, including the Savannah Veteran’s Day Parade. 2011 will start with a BTF program in January for a local board of realtors. Camp participation in parades should increase in 2011 as we have learned of the requirements of the various events. As of this writing, the new Commander, George A. Vail, has not made known his plans for 2011.

HUNTER #502, CSM Charles V. Deloe, Secretary, 12449 North-wood Rd, Savannah, GA 31419. The Chapter is mourning the death of Bro. Lawton M. Nease, Jr., WWII USN veteran, philanthropist, church and community leader at the age of 91. He shunned rec-ognition as he believed it was every person’s duty to serve and give without recognition. The month of November saw him receive the chapter Sojourner of the Year award. He previously received his 70-year apron from the Grand Lodge of Georgia, F&AM. The Savannah Word War II Memorial was completed after his incapaci-tation and dedicated the week of his death. He was also selected as Mason of the Year for Coastal Daylight Lodge No. 750, F&AM, where he served as Chaplain, the award is to be recognized at the December annual meeting.
