as companies adjust to Facebook›s new rules, they are finding the paradigm has shifted in a direction radio pros will find very familiar. Earlier this month, Cox Media announced the shuttering of its Fans 1st Media publications including RareCountry.com. Representatives from the company have tiptoed around how much of that decision has to do with Facebook specifically, but a look at RareCountry traffic on SimilarWeb shows that it re-ceived 399.33K total visits in February. That’s down from 630K in January when the change was announced, and well below the six-month high of 930K in October 2017. Understandably, many are wondering if Facebook is damaging the way various entities connect with their audiences. Townsquare Media’s Social Content Strategist Anthony Lauletta, who oversees the digital strategy for Taste of Country and The Boot, has found each Facebook algorithm change to be predictable. “It has become more and more focused on a person-to-per-son connection and less about how a user interacts with a publication or a brand,” he says. “For us, especially with Taste of Country and The Boot, it’s working in our favor. Coun-try music is something that people connect with each other over. It amplifies our content in a person’s newsfeed [since real people] really talk to each other about it.” In fact, Taste of Country and The Boot have seen an increase in organic reach on Facebook since the change. Concurrently, Cox VP/Audience & Content for Radio Tim Clarke says their stations› strategies are fitting into the algorithmic mold. ”We didn›t react in a big way,» he says. ”[Facebook founder] Mark Zuckerberg talked about this change as a move to get Facebook to a place where people can have more meaningful interactions. Radio is different from packaged goods and retail brands: We have actual people at the core of the content we push out. What radio is doing on social media is right in line with meaningful interactions.” Personal connection, or in radio parlance, «talking to the listener,» is furthered by content with a positive slant. So says Ashley Alexander of Girlilla Marketing, which works with Darius Rucker, Sugarland, Rascal Flatts, Toby

    AnthonyLauletta

    Tim Clarke

    AshleyAlexander

Keith and the Hemsworth brothers, to name a few. “When the news came out about the algorithm changes, the first thing we did was go to Zuckerberg’s post and try to dissect it as much as possible,” she says. “You can read through and pick out what you think he’s trying to say and adjust your strategy. What we saw was that posts from businesses, brands and media were crowding personal moments that people expect to see. He wants to make Facebook a better place.” Next week in part two, more on so-cial media strategy and examples from those who are winning. –Erin Duvall

(continued from page 1)Big Three: Data, Gut, Relationships

Jordan Walker and Johnny McGuire of Wheelhouse’s Walker McGuire discuss their most influential music:1. Blake Shelton’s “Austin:” (JW) It’s my favorite song. The first time I heard it, I was 10 and my family and I were on the way

to the bowling alley. I was blown away. What a cool story song.2. Keith Whitley: (JW) The best voice in the history of music.3. Keith Urban’s Get Closer: (JW) I listened to that while delivering pizzas, all summer long in college. I could tell you every note on that record. It changed my life. 4. Neal McCoy at Billy Bob’s: (JW) I was seven years old when I saw him. He was crazy. He was climbing the trusses, running all over the stage, sweating like crazy. He was working the stage but you could tell he was having a blast.5. The Great Divide: (JW) I saw them when I was 10 years old. My mom told the lead singer, Mike McClure, that I wanted to be a singer. He gave me a hat, signed it and talked to me for a few minutes. I always thought that was so cool. He didn’t have to spend that much time with me, but I’ll never forget it.• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: (JM) Jordan’s been telling me how awesome the latest Bruno Mars album is. I need to check it out.• “Important” music you just don’t get: (JM) EDM. I’m in-terested in how DJs make that music, but I’ve always just been an old-school “guitars, amps, bass, drums” guy. • An album you listened to incessantly: (JM) Tom Petty’s Wildflowers. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: (JM) There’s a band called The War On Drugs. Their song “Holding On” is a brilliant record.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: (JM) Savage Garden and boy bands. I grew up in the ‘90s and heard so much of that stuff. I really dug the melodies.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE

    Walker McGuire

“Every song should be treated differently when it comes to moving No. 1s to recurrent,” he says. “If the research was only medium and it went to the top, I won’t keep it around.” Beasley Country Format Captain and WSOC/Charlotte OM/PD DJ Stout also widens the array of inputs once music has reached significant airplay levels. “It’s a combination of research, record sales, iTunes, streaming numbers, Shazam and my gut,” he says. “If a No. 1 isn’t burning yet, sometimes I’ll packet the song so it still plays quite a bit. If there’s something ready to pop behind it, I’ll move it out.” Guts Like A Knife: KRTY/San Jose GM Nate Deaton com-bines elements of a research focus group with gut instinct. “I have an 18-person music team mainly composed of real-life everyday listeners,” he says. “Whichever song gets the most votes wins, whether it’s an add to KRTY’s playlist or conversion to a better category. We look at research, the chart and the sound of the station. Plus, if that artist just had a sold-out show, that has a huge influence on the record for us.” Collins tempers his view of show attendance. “Let’s say an artist is sold out here but the song isn’t testing local. I remind myself that 20,000 people in a sold-out venue is only a small representation of my total cume, so I must remain steady. One reactive measure programmers actively avoid is fear. “Take chances,” Deaton says. “I compete against Silicon Valley and all the streaming services, so I’ve got to be early on stuff. KRTY needs to be the place people go for country music discovery. Your audience always returns when your choices for new music are right. We’ve been taking chances for 20 years and I’ve seen six competitors come and go. You won’t always be right but, when you win, you win big.” By contrast, there’s at least one leap Deaton won’t make. “If somebody is unsigned, I’m not interested in making a regional star,” he says. “That’s a risk I won’t take. Artists need a national backing.” Stout agrees with bold decision making, but isn’t opposed to unsigned artists. “Programmers shouldn’t be afraid to play new music,” he says. “We need to be exposing these new artists to grow the format while cultivating relationships with the artists and labels. You can do that without hurting your radio station.” He adds, “Unsigned artists don’t scare me. I played Kane Brown

before he was signed and we sold out two shows.” Visitour: Perhaps the best indication of how important rela-tionships are to music decisions is the considerable investment labels continue to make in station visits. “An artist really needs to resonate in person,” Collins says. “You like to know if they have the full package before you’re going to invest in them with airplay. If the song they present is good, I’ll play it, but if the presentation is bad, that just backfires.” Deaton agrees. “An artist has a 1,000-times greater chance of being played if they make the effort to do a station visit versus sending me product,” he says. “A visit lets you see the artist play live so you can assess the reality of their potential. Save your five-song samplers.” “Visits sometimes speed up the process of adding the record,” echoes Stout. “You can tell if an artist has something and, if they

do, play the song and then bring them back to the market for [a listener show]. That’s the most reliable process.” A programmer armed with the right information – from the statistical to the visceral – is a programmer primed for success. And that never really changes. “It always trips me out when I hear stories from my record reps about programmers who don’t listen to the music,” Stout says of those who skip at least one crucial step. “They’re making their decisions based solely on research and consultants.” Guest columnist Tyler Reese is a 15-year radio vet whose programming and on-air stops include WMAD/Madison, WKKT/Charlotte, WSIX/Nashville and WEZL/Charleston, SC.
