Wade Lnenicka Commander

Commander’s Corner Dear Legionnaires,

I hope you and your family and loved ones are en-joying the summer. Your service in the Armed Forces provided the means for Americans every-where to enjoy their freedoms and liberty. We keep in our prayers the young men and women in the Armed Forces today for continuing to provide those Blessings to us and all Americans.

Right away this month we celebrate Independence Day, on July 4th. This day commemorates our na-tion's independence from Britain.

A pet peeve of mine is hearing people say "Happy 4th of July." They mean well and people have the best of intentions when they say this. But, I am "old school." We do not celebrate a calendar day. We celebrate the event. For instance, we do not say "Merry 25th of December," we say "Merry Christ-mas." So, when you speak with people I hope you will wish them a "Happy Independence Day."

As we begin a new Legion Year, I want to thank all the previous Legion Family officers who preceded me. This includes officers representing Post 160, Unit 160 and Squadron 160. I especially wish to thank the previous Post Commanders, most recently Kelvin "Doc" Barber. Thank you all for your sup-port, guidance and best wishes.

I need the help and support from everyone in the Legion Family. What can you do as a Legion Fami-ly member to help the Post? Here are some ideas:

• Attend the monthly meetings of your organiza-tion. Be informed, be active.

• Recruit new members for your organization. Non-profit organizations depend on membership to survive. We are no different.

• Support your organization's officers by word and deed - volunteer to help them!

• Come in to the Lounge many times a month and support the activities there.

• When you, your family or friends need space for an event, contact the Post's Junior Vice Com-mander - Ballroom (Roy Doane) to rent space at the Post.

• Offer constructive ideas for improvement, not criticism of those who are trying to do good things.

• Participate in fund raising activities. Actions speak louder than words.

• Volunteer. Volunteer. Volunteer.

In the end, nothing we do is about ourselves. It is not about me. It is not about you. It is not about another person. It is about serving Veterans and the community. If we are not helping people, then why are we here? Everything we do must be about help-ing others.

I know the Post 160 Legion Family has the most talented, smartest, and capable people of any Amer-ican Legion organization in the State. I call on each of you to get involved or stay involved. We need your help and ideas. We must have your support.

I also want to recognize 3 members of our SAL Family: Harold Leverette, Ryan Marschark and Ron Smith. On Sunday June 11th they cleaned all the gutters on the Post building. Thank you!

Finally, I wish to thank the members of Post 160 for honoring me by electing me to lead the Post. I pledge to do my best and to work hard. Please help me by offering new ideas and when necessary con-structive suggestions if you think I can do things better.

I hope to see everyone at the Post this month. Best wishes to all,

Wade Lnenicka [email protected]

Chaplain's Corner Chicago Tribune’s writer Ron Grossman, has put the 4th of July into its’ proper perspective for us in his article, “Think beyond your BBQ grill this 4th of July.” Ron suggests to us that we should lift a toast up in honor of Revolutionary War (19 April 1775 – 3 September 1783) Veteran John Adlum and his kindred souls on the 4th

On this date, the United States of America com-memorates the adoption of the Declaration of Inde-pendence. If these men and women had not put their lives and worldly possessions on the line, we could be offering a toast to the Queen of England’s health. We also would be speaking a very strict version of the King’s English. Reminds me of the saying, “If you can read this, thank a teacher. If it is in English, thank a veteran!” We know how Veter-an Adlum would feel about a choice like that. He wrote 241 years ago, “On the morning of the sev-enth of July, the four companies of the York, Pa., town militia was paraded, when the Declaration of Independence was read. Mr. Smith (who signed it) made a speech….and then threw up his hat and hur-rahed for liberty and independence. The militia on parade and others attending followed their exam-ple.” When the Declaration of Independence was read to General Washington and his soldiers in New York, it created such emotions that the listeners tore down a lead stature of the English King on horse-back which resulted in the making of 42,088 musket balls. Signer John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.

It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Did you HEAR that loud and clear my fel-low American Citizens? Far, far too many people in this great country of ours are here simply because they only want what we have. The 4th

of July, Vet-erans Day, Memorial Day, the playing of our Na-tional Anthem, respecting those that have / are serv-ing in uniform, our fallen men and women heroes that gave all – has absolutely no meaning to them. They are just plain fat, dumb and happy that some-one else paid / is paying the price for the freedoms that they so greedily lap off of a silver platter.

Miss Sarah was at the decisive Battle of Yorktown, as she later wrote, “The drums continued beating and all at once the Officers hurrahed and swung their hats, and Sarah asked them, ‘What is the mat-ter now?’ One of them replied, ‘Are you not soldier enough to know what it means?’ Sarah Osborn an-swered ‘No.’ The officer then replied, ‘The British have surrendered.’

of July, when your guests thank you for a fun-filled party, think of the joy Sarah Osborn felt on 19 October 1781. Sarah had volunteered to be a cook with the army. General Washington, seeing her at work as the cannon balls flew, suggested she take cover. She replied, “It would not do for the men to fight and starve too.”

Wednesday Dinner at Post On Wednesdays, we will feature "Home Recipe" Meals in the Lounge. Thank you to our volunteers who are our chefs. ALA will be providing the meals in July.

Queen of Hearts - Drawings on Wednesdays @ 7 PM All members of the American Legion Family (AL, ALA, SAL, ALR) from any legion post, as a mem-ber in good standing with a valid membership card, will be eligible to play. Guests who are signed in by members are not eligible to play.

Tickets are $2.00 each with no limit on the number of tickets purchased. Tickets may be purchased im-mediately after the weekly drawing and up until the next drawing.

All tickets sold are single stub tickets. You must legi-bly print your name and telephone number on the back of each ticket. There can be only one name per ticket. Once your name is on the ticket, return it to the Bar-tender or person running the Queen of Hearts for that drawing, to be placed in the raffle drum.

If you will not be present for the drawing, you also need to designate a card (envelope) number from 1through 54 to be turned if your entry is picked. If you would like to donate your winnings, you can use any reference to Post 160 organizations (i.e. Post 160, ALA 160, SAL 160, or future Riders 160). If you are not present, and have not designated a card (envelope) number to be turned, a card chosen at random will be turned.

The Queen of Hearts drawing will occur every Wednesday at 7 PM

If a ticket is drawn with no name on it, it will count as the allowed draw for that session. If you show up at 7:01 PM, and your name was called 3 times, you will be considered not present. Being considered not pre-sent it will have an effect, per on the payout. Draw-ings will not be held on any Wednesday that fall on a National Holiday (e.g. Christmas) and / or whenever the Social Quarters are closed. THE CLUBROOM CLOCK IS THE OFFICIAL CLOCK.

. The draw will be from the tickets purchased since the last drawing. Tickets will be drawn by the bartender, a member of the Post 160 Executive Committee, or a designee of the Staff.

If your name is drawn, you will have the opportunity to search for the Queen of Hearts on the game board. You will select a card (enve-lope) from the game board noted on the back of your card or open at random. If the card chosen is the Queen of Hearts, the winner, if present, will receive fifty percent (50%) of the jack-pot. Of the remaining fifty percent (50%), thirty percent (30%) goes back to the jack-pot, ten percent (10%) goes to support programs at the Post, and ten percent (10%) goes to the Post 160 Gen-eral Fund. If the winner is not present, the winner will receive twenty-five percent (25%) of the jack-pot. Of the remaining seventy-five percent (75%), fifty-five percent (55%) goes back to the jackpot, ten percent (10%) goes to support programs at the Post, and ten percent (10%) goes to the Post 160 General Fund.

Additional prizes will be awarded as follows, but only for players who are considered Present for the Draw-ing: JOKER – $ 50.00; ACE OR ANY FACE CARD – $ 25.00; ALL OTHER CARDS – $ 5.00

Each card selected and turned will have the winning ticket attached and that card will remain on the board. Once the “Queen of Hearts” is selected, the board will no longer be in play and will be placed in storage, with the attached winning tickets for a period of three years. A new board will be placed in play. Once a card is selected, it will be removed from play. This will be done by placing the card face up on the board. Each week, after the drawing, all non-winning tickets will be destroyed.

All winners are responsible for payment of any and all taxes. Prizes over $600.00 will be paid by check and the winner will be issued a W2-G (1099). NO prize over $600.00 will be paid until the W2-G (1099) in-formation is completely filled out. If a winner is un-willing to fill out a W2-G (1099), the prize will revert back to Post 160.
