In early 1967, 20 year-old Susan Galvin moved from her small town into Seattle to take up work as a reference clerk for the Seattle Police Department. Just a few months later in July 1967 her life was cut short and while police at that time tried to solve this case and bring justice for the young lady, they were unsuccessful. For over 50 years the case was cold and there appeared to be no fairness

She had been seen with a clown at the nearby tourism and entertainment centre and although he was interviewed he was never charged due to a lack of evidence. Soon after he quit his job and moved interstate and while dozens of people were interviewed the case did not progress any further.

In 2002 her clothes which had been stored were analysed and DNA evidence confirmed one thing – the clown was not a match and he was finally cleared of the suspicion that had hung over him. The DNA was checked with records, that the police had and the closest match was with a man born in Kentucky in 1828 and a woman born in Missouri in 1837. Using the public records a family tree was built down and a suspect was identified. Regrettably he had already passed away, however last year (2019) the family gave permission and the body was exhumed and a DNA match was obtained. Almost 52 years after the event the Seattle police announced they had found the killer and at the same time it became the oldest case to be solved with genetic genealogy.

God records what we say (Matt 12: 36,37), the things we do (2 Cor 5:10) and He will respond to us according to our deeds (Romans 2:6). If that doesn’t sound good let me add that He knows the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7), knows when you have tears (Ps 56:8) and one day will wipe them all away (Rev 21:4). That is the picture of a loving God.

He is also the ultimate Judge and though we live in a world that is contaminated with evil, there is a book (just one book) that has the audacity to predict the future, and get it right – every time. For thousands of years those predictions have come true, and so for all who have suffered injustice and prejudice, experienced pain and grief, and faced heartache in their family, God has promised that one day soon He will judge it and fix it.

When Gwyneth Paltrow’s father died her then husband Chris Martin of Coldplay fame wrote that iconic song (I will try to) Fix You. Despite the rock ballad’s haunting melody and widespread popularity, most will recognise that a piece of music only brings momentary solace. However, there is One who has been described as giving a peace that passes all understanding and He can guard both your heart and your mind when things seem unfair (Philippians 4:5).

It’s worth a thought

INSIGHTS

Charting a new course for kids post COVID-19

While we’ve been denied access during the COVID-19 pandemic to activities such as playing group sport, spending time in a caféor meeting with friends, there’s been plenty of upside too.

Discussions with friends reveal that family life has been a big beneficiary from the physical distancing measures. Comments suchas “It’s so good to slow down,” “I cherish the time I’m spending with my children,” and “I’m discovering the joy of having realconversations with my teenager” point to the positive side of getting o the family roundabout many of us have been on.

Though the restrictions placed on society are of course challenging, the imposed period of social isolation has provided anopportunity for parents to forge new habits that have potential to bring more joy and less stress to their children’s lives once thethreat has subsided. Here are some ideas to consider while charting a new course for kids post COVID-19.

Significant personal hobbies

Our previous reliance on organised, adult-initiated activity to keep kids busy came at the expense of child-initiated hobbies andinterests. The rise of personal digital entertainment and communication technology in recent years has also contributed to thedemise of hands-on hobbies such as collecting, cras and music.

The Scandinavians have long valued the positive impact of hobbies on a person’s wellbeing and quality of life. In turn theyencourage (and in Sweden’s case heavily subsidise) the uptake of hobbies and personal interests from a very young age.

Personal learning centres

Experts agree that the future of work will be characterised by constant change, requiring workers to continually learn and upskillif they are to adapt. Our children will need to see themselves as continuous learners if they are to succeed in this uncertainfuture.

The home is a great place to plant this concept in young minds and there’s no better way to do this than establishing their ownpersonal learning centre. Start small with a bean bag, a small book shelf and build from there. It’s the idea rather than thephysical setting where the learning significance lays.

Mental health practices

This period in isolation has oered an opportunity to embed good mental health practices in children and young people. Threekey health practices to continue include healthy eating, plenty of exercise and good sleep patterns. Add regular mindfulnesspractice, deep breathing and the opportunity to spend plenty of time in nature and you’ll be establishing a strong mental healthand wellbeing framework for life.

Mix of alone and group activities

Life in social isolation has meant family members have had to compromise. Extroverts who love to be surrounded by peoplehave had to give parents and siblings the space they need. Introverts who prefer their own company have been sharing theirtime, space and company with other family members. Post COVID-19, consider encouraging kids to experience a mixture ofalone time, allowing for personal reflection and family time, which promotes family connection. Both are essential for healthywellbeing.

Deep eldership connection

Increased one-on-one time between parents and kids has been a positive side eect of life in social isolation. The opportunity forparents to connect with children and young people with greater depth and meaning is a return to eldership, practised by pastgenerations. Eldership, where parents shared their wisdom and their vulnerabilities with young people, when combined withhealthy rites of passage is a time-honoured way of preparing young people for adulthood.

This period of social isolation has provided a rare opportunity for parents to renew and refresh their children’s lifestyles, and insome circumstances, reboot family lives as well. It would be a waste to climb back on the busy roundabout of life once theCOVID-19 pandemic has subsided, without making some positive changes to the way we live.
