Proper Restroom Sanitation

Kill Germs Control OdorsPatron Comfort / Convenience

1. Prepare the area: Knock on restroom door, announce your intent to

enter. If occupied, wait until it is empty, then open and "stop" door. Post

"closed for cleaning" signs.

2. Start with bowls and urinals: Apply rtu bathroom cleaner. Allow

disinfectant to work while cleaning. Review Restroom Care section

for acid products.

3. Dry clean: Dust high and low. Clean vents, tops of doors and

partitions. Sweep/dust mop, remove all dry soil and trash from

floors. Empty and remove trash can liner/sanitary napkin receptacle.

4. Wet clean: Clean all lights, mirrors, and glass surfaces with klearview.

With a dampened cloth, wipe the top edge of doors. Wipe the top

and bottom edges of all partitions. Spot clean walls with rtu

bathroom cleaner. Spray and wipe down dispensers/receptacles.

5. Clean wash basins: Use no-scratch crème cleanser or rtu bathroom

cleaner. Clean interior surfaces first, wet with disinfectant. Clinging

cleaners work better under sinks/vertical surfaces. Examine and

clean all exterior sink surfaces and pipes. Don't use strong acids,

bowl cleaners or harsh abrasives in sinks. Wipe chrome dry. Check

faucets and drains.

6. Clean showers/bath: Use x-it mold & mildew on all tile surfaces.

Scrub as needed. Rinse. For soap scum control, use fresh & brite or

rtu bathroom cleaner.

7. Clean interior of toilets and urinals: Swab bowl and flush. Rinse out

and dry bowl mop. See below for disinfecting procedure.

8. Clean exterior of toilets and urinals: Wipe the top of the toilet seat

with the rtu bathroom cleaner. Raise the seat and clean the

underside. Clean hinges. Disinfect all other surfaces and pipes and

the toilet seat.

9. Clean waste and sanitary napkin receptacles: Clean inside and out

with rtu bathroom cleaner. Replace liners.

10. Replenish supplies: Refill hand soap, towel, tissue and sanitary

napkin dispensers. Check the working conditions of all dispensers.

Check urinal screens/blocks.

11. Disinfect all hand contact areas: Use rtu bathroom cleaner on flush

and faucet handles. Spray wet and allow to air dry.

12. Clear floor of all obstructions and wet mop: Wet mopping is a

disinfectant procedure. High moisture level/longer contact time

increase bacteria kill. Use a neutral disinfectant on resilient tile.

Immerse mop into neutral disinfectant and lightly wring out.

Apply disinfectant to all areas and allow to sit for 10 minutes.

Wring mop and pick up or feather excess solution. Change

disinfection solution as needed.

Remove standing water from commode with bowl mop. 10 to 12 short strokes should

clear all water over the trap. Apply disinfectant by saturating the bowl swab. Hold

swab directly over toilet/urinal while applying cleaner. Starting under the rim, working

around, apply product. Push swab into water inlet holes, allow product to run down.

Leave wet for 10 minutes.

Be sure to clean the flushing rim and waterline areas carefully. Using the mop, be

sure to clean down in the exposed trap area. Check under the rim for rust stains or

encrustations. Once cleaned, flush commode and rinse out the bowl mop.
