The Six Legged Frog Once upon a time there was a frog named Hubert. Hubert was born with six legs. He wasn’t accepted by other frogs and was made fun of all the time. “Mommy, why can’t frogs learn to accept me?”, Hubert asked in a whiney, sad manner. “They don’t understand why you have six legs and it’s not your fault.” said Mom. “Now it’s time to get to school.” On Hubert’s way to school he stopped to admire the beautiful flowering wild rice. With it’s bright purple pedals no animal around could miss it. When Hubert got to school Gordon and Kilian were waiting outside the classroom door. They wouldn’t let him pass. Hubert thought to himself how ugly they were. Gordon was super skinny with red eyes and lumps all over his body. Kilian was fat with big purple spots. “Oh come on, let me in! I wouldn’t have six legs if frogs like you would stop polluting.” said Hubert.

“Now it’s time to get to school.”

On Hubert’s way to school he stopped to admire the beautiful flowering wild rice.

“You’re a freak Hubert!” yelled Kilian as he ran in the classroom.

He wanted to tell his teacher Ms. Hall, but he knew she wouldn’t understand. As the year went on Hubert became more and more lonely.

Then one day a new student came, her name was Dobb. She also had six legs and people made fun of her too. At lunch he opened his lunch box and was surprised to see a Smyth Island cake packed because the fish population is down and it was rare for people to make the cakes now. Dobb sat down beside Huber, but of course Hubert wasn’t used to people being around him so he just sat there quietly..

Dobb asked, “How did you get six legs?”

Gordon interrupted, “He’s a freak! That’s why.”

Ms. Hall walked pass as he said that. “Come with me now, Gordon.”

“I have six legs because of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay.” said Dobb.

Hubert replied, “Me too.”

The next day in school Hubert and Dobb made posters to let all other creatures know how pollution damages animals. To get the word around they had sea gulls fly around carrying the posters. After creatures all around the Chesapeake Bay as well as humans read the signs, they started to care more about the environment.

Several years later Dobb and Hubert had three little tad polls. None of them ended up with six legs. The posters that were made and the help from the

sea gulls really made a difference. Dobb, Hubert, and their tad polls all moved to Smyth Island to live in the marshy land there. They loved eating the famous Smyth Island cakes that had fried fish in them. It was okay to eat a lot of the cakes because the fish populations increased do to less pollution. Nobody ever threw trash in the bay again.
