Dear Parents and Community Members….. Welcome to the new school year. It has been
a very busy but very rewarding start to the term
with many excited students and teachers keen to
get underway.
A very special welcome is extended to our
2014 Kindergarten students and to those families
new to Sir Henry Parkes MPS. It is wonderful to
have you all as members of our school community.
As the new Principal I look forward to getting
to know each of the students and their families. My
aim is to ensure that as a school we strive to cater
for each and every student’s learning needs. I urge
parents and carers to come along to Meet the
Teacher events and the Welcome BBQ this term.
(Details will be notified shortly.) The first Parents
and Citizens’ Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,
February 11th at 6.00pm and all are most welcome.
Please do take advantage of these opportunities for
parents and teachers to get to know each other, and
work together for the students.
The first fundraiser for this year will be an
NRL Calcutta to be held on Saturday, March 8th .
Please keep your eye open for tickets that will be
sent home with the students shortly.
Our canteen is also urgently in need of
volunteers in order that it can continue to provide a
range of valuable services for the students. Please
consider giving some time. Even if you can only
manage once or twice a term, every little bit helps.
Vicki Petrie our canteen manager can be contacted
on 6736 1732.
Please also remember that if you have any
questions or concerns do contact the school so that
we can create suitable solutions together.
Scholastic Book Club 2014

reading offers.
*Twice each term Book Club brouchers will be given
to children to take home and make their selections.
*Order forms and payment need to be handed to in
the front office by 9am on the due date.
*Please ensure that your child’s name and class are
clearly written on each order form used & the
envelope.
*If you are making a credit card payment please
follow the instructions on the order form. Orders
from all brouchers can be totalled so that one receipt
number is given. Return this receipt with your order.
*ISSUE 1 order forms are due back to school by 9am
on Thursday, February 20th.
Scripture
Infants and Primary School Scripture classes
will resume on Thursday, February 20th.
The purpose of teaching scripture is to
provide students with the basics of the Christian
faith so that they might have the tools to decide
what they believe for themselves.
In line with our school motto of 'Learning for
Life', the scripture program aims to ensure that in
the future inevitable ups and downs of life, students
can draw on what they have learnt to consider the big
questions of life.
As in previous years, all students, other than
Catholic and Jehovah’s Witness students will remain
in the classroom for scripture. If you do not wish
your child to attend scripture please write a note
stating this and they will be removed from the
classroom and will do extra work in another room.
If you have any questions about the scripture
program, please give me a ring on 6736 1086. Gus
Robinson, Minister of the Anglican Church.
Is your child in a new class without their friends?
At some stage in their school life your child is
likely to find themselves in a class without their close
friends. It's normal for them to initially feel a little
anxious about this, so how should you handle it?

at 6pm in the Primary staff room as usual. This meeting will not be our AGM! Our AGM date will be finalised at the meeting on the 11th. However please encourage and invite

Crunch and Sip
Our School has Crunch and Sip every day

enjoy fruit, vegetables (fresh is best) or a

If students are purchasing Crunch from
the canteen, they must do this (buy and take)

Health Message What is immunisation?
Immunisation protects people against
harmful infections before they come into
contact with them in the community.
Immunisation uses the body’s natural
defence mechanism - the immune response - to
build resistance to specific infections.
Immunisation helps people stay healthy
by preventing serious infections.
Why should people be immunised?
There are two reasons for immunising
every person in Australia:
1. Immunisation is the safest and most
effective way of giving protection against the
disease. After immunisation, you are far less
likely to catch the disease if there are cases in
the community. The benefit of protection
against the diseases far outweighs the very
small risks of immunisation. 2. If enough people in the community are
immunised, the infection can no longer be
spread from person to person and the disease
dies out altogether. This is how smallpox was
eliminated from the world and polio has
disappeared from many countries. Often these
preventable disease cause disability (physical
eg. loss of hearing, impact limb development
and/or function, amputations, infertility and
intellectual) and can even cause death.
Have you ever watched a baby (who can’t
be vaccinated due to their young age) suffer from whooping cough and unfortunately in many cases die? Please help eliminate such diseases by ensuring your child and yourself are fully immunised (check that your immunisations are up to date).

2014 School Swimming Carnival The school’s annual swimming will be held next
Thursday, February 6th. The carnival is a compulsory
activity for students in Years 3-6 (they do not have to
enter an event but it is encouraged and we hope to have
time for some novelty events in the shallow end of the
pool) and for students in year 2 who are aged 8 or
turning 8 this year and can swim the length of the pool.
Students received a note last week and these must be
returned along with money ($1 for the pool or pool pass
and $1.50 for the bus if travelling by the bus) by
TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 5th.
Parents/carers/family are invited to attend and
encourage the students, assist with time keeping
(please contact Miss Eakin or Mr Maher if available
even for part of the day) and/or swim in the parent
students v staff relay. The students are to be in the
grandstand at all times unless competing in an event or
have been told they can visit the canteen.
Staff Achievements Congratulations to Mr Manser who was
recognised at a regional level for his contributions
made to cricket specifically highlighting his voluntary
work.
