AssociAte editor

COnStrUCtiOn has begun on a new K to 12 school in

Pikangikum First nation.the First nation is

responsible for managing all aspects of the project such as tendering and selecting contractors.

Pikangikum awarded the contract for design-build services to Penn-Co Construction Ltd. on July 29, 2014.

the new school in

Pikangikum will be 9239 square metres in size and is designed for an enrollment of 936 students.

the project is expected to create employment

and training opportunities for members of the community during the construction process.

Kenora MP Greg rickford was in Pikangikum on november 10 to make the announcement.

He also announced the completion of a seven unit multi-housing project.

Aboriginal Affairs and northern development Canada (AAndC) provided $800,000 toward the project, which will provide sustainable housing options in the community.

“the Government of Canada’s overarching goal is to provide First nation students with quality education that provides them with the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to enter the labour market and be full participants in a strong Canadian economy,” rickford stated in a press release.

“Both the school and the housing complex will make a significant difference in the lives

of the community and especially the youth of Pikangikum First nation. You should be proud of the improvements you are making to the quality of life for the members of this community,” he added.

“this new school is creating the foundations of success for our First nation students. Once this school is completed, students will have access to all the tools young people need to live fulfilling lives and contribute to our community. We are also pleased to provide living environments that promote the well-being of our community members. Housing developments like this one give greater hope and opportunity for the individuals and families in our community,” shared Pikangikum Chief Paddy Peters.

rickford also announced Fednor funding of $278,320 to enable the Whitefeather Forest Community resource

Mocktail night puts focus on addictions awareness

Shayla BradleystAff Writer

drinKS and a movie took on a new twist

november 13 with a mocktail party at the youth centre hosted by the nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre.

Jocelyn Berard, an addictions worker at the centre, explained that the event was part of national Addictions Awareness Week programming.

the goal of the evening was “to bring awareness to addiction and dependency in our community,” said Berard.

Community members enjoyed their mocktails while watching a documentary.

The film, The Life You Want, was chosen because it features local content. the thunderstone Pictures film tells the story of doris, a Fort Hope resident struggling to overcome addiction.

it can be viewed online at thunderstonepictures.

com/ the-life-you-want. the mocktail and

film night, put on by Berard and Urban Aboriginal Healthy Living coordinator Cindy Phillips, was designed to get people talking about issues of addiction and dependency, and possible solutions for these problems.

it provided people an opportunity to learn, share, and talk, said Berard. Mocktail recipes were on hand for people who enjoyed the refreshments.

the centre is also hosting a bigger event to observe the week.

“We are doing a sobriety powwow on the 22nd of november at Pelican Falls,” shared Berard.

“it’s drug and alcohol free,” she added. “transportation can be arranged, if needed, by calling the Friendship Centre before 4:30 on the 21st.”

everyone is welcome to attend. Grand entry is at 1 p.m. on november 22.

Management Authority to identify the most viable products and niche markets for a proposed sawmill to be operated by Pikangikum.

the funding will support the hiring of qualified experts to complete a value chain optimization assessment.

“Our government is proud to support this initiative, which will provide vital information required to maximize economic opportunities in the forestry sector. today’s investment will lay the groundwork for employment in value-added manufacturing, as well as jobs in woodlands and sawmilling using northern boreal wood, delivering benefits to the Pikangikum people,” said rickford who is

also the Minister for the Federal economic development initiative for northern Ontario.

“We are pleased to partner with Fednor and the Government of Canada on this important initiative. Combining the stewardship approach of the Whitefeather Forest initiative with the creation of value-added forestry opportunities holds much potential for us. Fednor support will assist us in developing an implementation strategy that will ultimately enable us to create jobs and secure a brighter future for our members,” said Alex Peters, Whitefeather Forest Community resource Management Authority.

rickford also attended a sod turning ceremony in Poplar Hill First nation that day for a new

school there.the 2309 square metre

school will be designed for an enrollment of 173 students from Kindergarten to Grade 9.

the new school is expected to open in September of 2016.

“i’m pleased to join the Poplar Hill First nation in turning the first shovel of soil as an official launch of what is to be an exciting time in building a new school for the community. ensuring that Aboriginal children receive a quality education is a priority for our government. We are working in partnership with Poplar Hill First nation on a cost-effective and innovative design-build approach to ensure their youth have the same educational facilities as those enjoyed by other students in Canada,”

rickford said.“the community of

Poplar Hill has been working on this project for more than 10 years. the school is an extremely important facility in

our community since it provides our children with an environment where they can learn, grow and work toward a future filled with hope and success. We applaud AAndC

for presenting us with an innovative option that has allowed this important project to move forward,” concluded Poplar Hill First nation Chief Alice Suggashie.

Recreation Centre to the rescue with programs this winterTim Brody

AssociAte editor

ALtHOUGH it may not officially be here yet,

winter has descended upon Sioux Lookout.

With the change in season, people may find themselves looking for new things to try.

if that’s you, the Sioux Lookout recreation Centre may be just what

you are looking for.Program Coordinator

Marc nielsen shared, “Something new we are offering is called K-Fit Kettlebell class. We purchased a bunch of kettlebells and had a new instructor come in and say they were interested in teaching this class. it’s about biometrics, kinetics.

“We have spin classes. Buns n Guns Boot Camp

is something new that we’ve started offering. there are two different sessions of that, along with two different spin classes, and an intro to spin for someone who wants to try a spin class but isn’t really sure if it is for them.”

nielsen added, “On Mondays and Fridays we have our Fresh Market Free Gym intended for

children three to 10. that takes place in the meeting room or the gymnasium. the kids do crafts or play games as an after school activity.”

neilsen further stated, “We also offer a variety of drop-in programs such as basketball, badminton, squash, ultimate Frisbee, which is something new this year, and tennis.”

the rec Centre is also

offering a november 24 Pd event. For children aged 4-10, 18 registered participants will play games, do crafts, and enjoy a movie. neilsen advises parents to register early for that.

A new season has arrived

Winter snuck in during the night last week. Here’s what i saw as morning dawned. i’m glad we were able to spend four days at camp this last weekend of the season. i had thought we might get in another weekend or two, but we still had significant ice to break through getting away from the dock that afternoon. So, it was boat out the next day, trailered and parked in the yard, and

now the four or five week wait before we can snowmobile out to camp.

We had lots of birds and were especially happy to see redpolls and nuthatches, which are usually plentiful, but were entirely absent last winter.

We had also Blue Jays, Whiskeyjacks, evening Grosbeaks, Pine Grosbeaks, Chickadees, and a Hairy Woodpecker.

And an otter playing around at the dock. Bulletin Photos/Dick MacKenzie

Continued from frontthunderstone Pictures, and is a series of five short documentary films designed to educate and encourage frank conversations in our community about the reality of the life and history of Aboriginal peoples both here and across Canada.

“The films, which are a creation of award-winning film maker Michelle derosier, are each 10 to 15 minutes in length and address subjects such as treaties, racism, violence against women and the way forward. the overall object of this project is to strengthen relationships between the community at large and urban Aboriginal peoples.

“in particular, this film series is a means to bring discussions on diversity and relat ionship-building into sharper focus in a

way that will encourage all our community members, no matter where they come from, to fully understand historical Aboriginal and community issues in their current context so that we can have discussions that are both informed as well as welcoming and respectful.”

Following the screening the floor was opened up for discussion.

One person talked about needing to know other people’s stories in order to get along.

Another spoke of encountering racism regularly and was dismayed that some people still do not treat other people equally in this day and age.

Councillor-elect Yolaine Kirlew was in attendance and said, “You need to put racism on the table, on all tables.”

Mayor-elect doug Lawrance attended and said there needs to be more of this type of discussion in the community.

the consensus among those gathered was that more of these types of discussions

need to happen in Sioux Lookout.

The film project itself received a round of applause and thanks were expressed to the Friendship Centre and SLFnHA for hosting the evening.

Wesley commented

afterward on the desire for next steps by participants. “that did seem to be the general consensus, that it was a good dialogue to start and to keep having these kinds of discussions going. i think people want to see more.”

Away from Home Skye Neekanco-op student

WHen i was younger i looked forward

to high school, because i thought it would be all fun and games like it is in the movies.

it’s really not like the movies though. Sure, you have the different groups that hang out together and all that. But, you see, there’s a big difference between the

high schools in movies and mine.

the difference between the high schools in the movies and my high school is that everyone in my school is miles away from home.

Being miles away from home kind of scared me, but i was still looking forward to high school. i was happy to get away from home. i was happy because finally I’d get

a change of scenery. i don’t mean to sound selfish, but I liked the fact of just focusing on me, and getting to know myself more.

it wasn’t long though before i started to feel alone. i hadn’t made any friends, because i’m a pretty quiet person, and it takes me quite a while to get used to people.

After what felt like an eternity of being alone and bored I finally made

friends who later became my very best friends. i was with them all day, every day. My friends helped me to be not so homesick.

i still felt lonely, without my parents and family members, though. Whenever i was super homesick, i’d write poems about all the nature that surrounded me back at home. that really helped because, although i wasn’t there, i

felt like i was. Sometimes when those

wouldn’t work i’d think about my family back home, and i’d think about how proud they were of me being out here and getting my education.

Being away from home isn’t always easy, but with the help of friends, a hobby, and a proud family back at your community, it can be easier.

You need to put racism on the table, on all tables

The legacy of the Legion: The founding yearsShayla Bradley

tHe first permutation of the royal Canadian Legion

was known as the Canadian Legion of the British empire Service League, established in June 1925 in Winnipeg.

in Sioux Lookout, the Legion received its charter June 4, 1930. Charter members were H.e. Smith, President, Joseph Keane, J.J. Kelly, rod Brunton, J. Oxener, P. Serson, W. Serson, t.A. Carroll, W.J. Hall, and dr. H.K Mitchell.

“From that date the membership grew

gradually with some well known people of Sioux Lookout,” reads Volume One of tracks Beside the Water.

“During the first war there really weren’t that many members because the depression was on,” explained Glenn Wilson, Past President.

Anticipating a boom in membership after World War ii, the membership purchased its first facility, a building located at 86 Front Street.

“The first building was right next to roy Lane, a small stone building,” recalled Legion member John Cole Jr.

“From ‘25 till after the war, there wasn’t much... the building was small and they didn’t have a hall,” Wilson added. “they didn’t really have a building until 1960.”

Prior to purchasing the building, members held meetings in different locations around town, such as the Orange Hall.

in Hudson, the Legion was formed a few years later.

“there weren’t too many World War i vets around here, but they used to have movies, Saturday and Sunday,” recalled member don Starratt.

the Hudson Legion

was formed March 29, 1939. The first charter members were W. Cook, Col. J.M. Candlish, e.W. Morgan, A.e. Wright, J.A. tickner, A. Jarvis, P. Skidmore, M.r. reid, H.W. Love, J.F. Pike, r. Kleven, P. Atkinson, S. Starratt, B. Pinkess, J. Gillis, F. taylor, W. down, J. Corcoran, and A. Lucharne.

When servicemen returned from overseas, the membership boomed in both Legions, leading to a frenzy of activity, renovations, and events.

The next article in this series will delve into the busy period after World War II.

tHe royal Canadian Legion, Branch no. 78, has been an important institution in Sioux Lookout since its beginnings in

1930. the royal Canadian Legion, Branch no. 139 in Hudson was founded later and has also had a major impact on the community.

Along the way the Legion Ladies Auxiliary was founded, and all three organizations have hosted fundraisers, organized events, and provided camaraderie and friendship for those in uniform and for civilians.

Follow along as we explore the role of the Legion from its early days, to the post-war boom, to the struggles it faces today, and what can be done to ensure the longevity of the Legion.

WitH the return of servicemen from overseas

following World War ii, membership in the Sioux Lookout Legion ballooned to more than 200. the large number of Legion members made for a busy schedule of activities.

“When i grew up they looked after all kinds of stuff, hockey, army cadets, baseball. they were active in everything. the Legion had a big strong active member base,” said member John Cole Jr.

“they used to do the July 1st. there would be kids races, Crown and Anchor and what have you,” added Glenn Wilson.

“When i was a child, peewee hockey was always sponsored by the Legion, and minor league baseball,” said Les Wallace. “that was a big thing because everybody played hockey.”

From hockey to bowling, Legion members were busy.

“i can remember coming down when i was a kid... i’d stick my head in and the place

was packed,” Cole said. “they were that age. they were determined to entertain themselves. they’d have these nights down here where people would dress up in costumes... fish fries up the lake, Legion picnics.”

in Hudson, after the war, the Legion served a practical purpose.

“the Legion was a big hub,” explained Sylwester Kiepek. “After the war not everybody had water and stuff like that... in the Legion room... don installed and fibreglassed a shower room so anybody could come out and actually have a shower. that was thanks to the Legion.”

However, it was not just business. the Hudson Legion also provided entertainment.

“the Legion organized movies, and all the activities in town. We had a very big First of July here,” Kiepek said.

Hudson’s community cenotaph went up right away.

“that was done right after the war,” said don Starratt. “A fellow from Sioux Lookout put that up.”

now, the cenotaph is maintained by a

community member, and the Legion is looking into painting and restoring the community gathering place.

in both communities the Legion served as a meeting and gathering place for veterans.

“My husband was an Air Force veteran and one of the things he loved was the connection with the Air Force members,” recalled Peggy Sanders. “He was a devoted Legion member. He was very keen on that. He certainly was a strong supporter of the Legion and was delighted to see me get involved.”

“there were so many members in those days,” said Cole.

the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, formed January 13, 1949, was also busy.

“the Auxiliary tended to be people here who had family that had been in the war,” explained charter member Peggy Sanders. “it wasn’t a very big group in the beginning. they met, of course, in the old Legion building. From the beginning, the thing they were good at was catering.”

“Membership continued to grow and so did the work of the Auxiliary; charitable donations, CAre packages, assistance to needy families, Christmas and easter hampers and many other worthwhile causes,” reads Volume One of tracks beside the Water.

“At that point our main objective was to get a group of people who would continue to work, and that they did do,” Sanders said. “they got a lot of people involved. it was close enough from the end of the war that people were still very much aware. this town had a lot of veterans.”

the Sioux Lookout

Legion building, purchased in 1940, was no longer large enough to accommodate everyone, and so the search for new property was on. in 1959 the membership decided to build onto the back of the existing location, with everything completed by 1960. A kitchen was added upstairs, completed in 1973, so the ladies no longer had to cook in the basement and then carry everything upstairs for serving.

in 1953 Auxiliary members began travelling to yearly conventions, a tradition that continues to this day.

1961 saw community

canvassing to raise funds for a cenotaph in Sioux Lookout, which was ultimately built in time for the town’s 50th anniversary in 1962.

in 1977 the Hudson and Sioux Lookout Ladies Auxiliaries joined forces, combining into the Sioux Lookout Ladies Auxiliary.

Hudson’s Legion branch was renamed in 1957 to the Branch Candlish Memorial no. 139.

“He was a Colonel in the First World War, with the Lord Strathcona Horse in Winnipeg,” explained Starratt. “the government put

“it wasn’t that many years ago

we had 300 (members),” said Glenn Wilson.

“We’re down to 279 now,” explained Legion President Les Wallace.

About 20 veterans remain active in the Sioux Lookout Legion, making a noticeable difference in Legion activities. Speaking of remembrance day ceremonies, John Cole Jr said, “With 20-something vets left in our town... the Legion, really, we don’t get called on as much as we used to.”

“there were so many, like Willy roy, who died this year,” said Peggy Sanders. He landed on d-day. “He was always one of the speakers at remembrance day things at the schools. He was very, very good on that. So many of the veterans are gone. there are not very many left.”

the Hudson Legion is in a similar situation with just 24 members, a loss owing to rapidly dwindling veteran population. don Starratt is the last veteran left in Hudson’s Legion.

“it’s a decrease of nine members from the year earlier. At one time we were over 50, about three or four years ago,” explained Sylwester Kiepek.

“i believe that the membership is directly proportioned to the population of the town,” Kiepek added. “When we had 500 people in Hudson, we had 50 members. now we’ve probably got 240 people,

we have 24 members.”“it just seems that

people really aren’t that interested,” lamented Glenn Wilson. “there are a few that are and lots that aren’t.”

the main issue identified by Legion members is a serious shortage of youth involvement.

“i hear this from other Air Force friends of mine. the Legions in their communities are really suffering and a lot of them have closed because there just wasn’t enough interest,” Sanders said. “the only way we can keep it going is to have enough young people... for so many families, the kids aren’t here, and others coming in perhaps don’t have the same connection.”

“One of the problems is, before, when one of the kids finished school, they’d go on the railroad,” Wilson said. “Now they finish school, they go away to university and they never come back.”

With a youth population that tends to not return home, the typical inter-generational membership of the Legion is falling away.

“You become separated farther and farther,” Cole said. “i was more involved because my father was a vet, but now we’re getting grandchildren and children and the Legion isn’t quite as significant. I mean, there are wars going on right now. there are veterans coming home now. We have to keep it going.”

the Legion has tried to find ways to attract

youth, but is failing.“i think most people

of my generation have a strong feeling about the Legion,” offered Sanders. “For the generation that is new, i don’t know.”

“We tried getting our darts going again, because darts used to be really strong, but the young kids don’t play darts now,” said Cole. “they don’t play crib anymore. they don’t curl anymore.”

there are also far fewer young people from the area serving military duty, compared to the past.

“Somebody said the other day what we need is another war, but i don’t think it’s worth that,” Sanders said. “it isn’t a thing the young people go into. the demand in wartime was different. now it’s just a career choice and there are a lot of other career choices. You don’t have the involvement you used to have.”

it would take a few younger people to join the Legion to encourage a more active youth population.

“if we had enough of them, then they would probably, as a group within a group, do things they like. it’s hard for us as old guys to say what a 19-year-old wants to do. We’re kind of out of touch,” said Cole.

“it’s part of your heritage to maintain this,” Sanders urged youth.

Changes in legislation making gambling laws stricter has had an undeniable impact on the Legion as a whole.

“if you sell lotto tickets, you have to explain every nickel. it has to go to a charity. You can’t help your branch... we paid this Legion off with that lottery,” Wilson said.

“it’s changed the goals of the Legion a bit. We’re very limited as to who we can take money out of the benevolent fund for,” explained Cole, adding, “People maybe think if you buy a poppy you’re helping the Legion pay their Hydro but you’re not. that money is all kept separate.”

“it really makes it hard to get the revenue up,” Kiepek said.

don Starratt said he was picked up by the police for infringing on gambling laws running a Crown and Anchor game for a Legion Canada day celebration.

even the Ladies Auxiliary is affected by the new laws.

“the gambling rules that have been brought in have really put a damper on a lot of the organizations in town. it’s not cheap to put a bingo on now,” explained Gail roy.

increases in the percentage provincial command takes out of membership fees has proved to be another problem.

“We have a per capita rate we have to send in to our provincial command... they raised their per capita rate to $12 per person that’s in the auxiliary so we raised our membership to $15. it still only gives us $3 a member to put in the general fund,” roy said.

“it’s so hard to sell tickets and everyone depends on raffles,” Kiepek said. “You need a license. You can’t even spend money on yourself. You have to spend on non-profit organizations.”

“it’s a very, very tough situation to try to keep your head above water right now,” Wilson said. “the government has restricted you so badly. the money made on the lotteries before never went out frivolously.”

“Anything we make, we spend,” explained Cole. “Our goal isn’t to have a bank account. Our goal is to bring money in, pay our bills, and do some good around the

community. there’s no incentive here to bank money other than what it takes to operate.”

Stringent drinking laws have put a damper on the Legion’s bar-based income.

“Our primary source of income now is hall rental,” said Wallace.

“that keeps our bar numbers up. it’s not people coming in off the street. it’s organized functions,” Cole explained.

“even the steak frys, you used to have a couple hundred. now you’re lucky to get a hundred,” said Wilson.

“And now they eat their steak, have one drink, and go home,” Cole lamented.

the Legion can no longer ask a member to cover the bar, as servers must be certified and qualified, adding another cost to running the business.

“in the old days the clubroom kept things going but those days are over... now, in the bar business, the social part of it is nowhere where it used to be. the room is empty lots,” Cole said.

Legion Legacy continued ...in project camps during the depression. One came here. i think it was Camp 33. they were supposed to cut all the wood in Lac Seul that was going to be flooded when the water came up.”

“the work crews, they all left but the Colonel stayed,” said Kiepek. “He was a very formal guy, very proper.”

the Sioux Lookout branch was renamed the edwin Switzer Memorial Branch in 1998 in honour

of Switzer’s service to the community. Switzer was president of the branch numerous times over the years.

“ed Switzer was one of those individuals who spent a lifetime working for the cause of others,” said then-president doug Pierce in Volume three of tracks beside the Water. “He was the epitome of service, husband, father, son... a true Legionnaire.”

Presently, the Legion is active in both communities. in both

cases, the Legions are perhaps best known for their remembrance day activities. in both towns, community members gather to honour servicemen and women, with wreath-laying, speeches and a community meal.

Along with remembrance day activities, Hudson’s Legion runs a unique memorial system for community military members killed in action.

“there were nine people from Hudson that were killed during the

war... we’ve got islands named after them,” explained Starratt.

“to make sure everyone remembered them, not just a name on a cenotaph... what they’ve done is made cairns up Lac Seul,” said Kiepek.

Seven islands are named as well as two points in Frenchman’s Head territory, selected by then-chief of Lac Seul tom Peetawayway, to honour Lac Seul military members killed in the war.

the 50-member Ladies Auxiliary continues to be active.

“We’re there for the men,” explained President Gail roy. “Our mandate is to help them.”

the Auxiliary runs banquets, bingos, meals, and collects a benevolent fund for Legion members. they also give out an annual $1000 bursary for a high school graduate separate from the regular Legion bursary.

the Legion building in Sioux Lookout is

a gathering place for activities, both Legion and community run, from talent nights to dinners and weddings.

However, both the Hudson and Sioux Lookout Legions are struggling with problems that may threaten the Legion’s continued existence.

The next article in the series will look at what problems the Legion faces, and what solutions may keep the Legion going for future generations.

As the government has stepped up laws, it has also moved in to take over some of the Legion’s former roles.

“it’s a social club that looks after its brothers,” said Cole. “Social services are now paid for by the government. tax dollars pay for it now.”

Another hindrance to the Legion’s ongoing success is the rising cost of utilities and taxes.

“the cost of operations has gone crazy, when you figure the cost of Hyrdo and electric heat in this building,” Cole said. “taxes are high. We’ve got some help from the town on that over the past few years... cost of sewer, water, hydro, insurance.”

“Manitoba Legions don’t pay municipal taxes,” added Wallace. “there’s talk of

something like that happening in Ontario.”

“What we make in dues in a year wouldn’t pay our Hydro bill for two weeks,” Cole said.

Many of the Legion’s events and activities are strained by a shortage of member volunteers. For the Auxiliary, roy said the issue is that younger members often have to worry about work and childcare when events are held, and most of

the time it’s the same volunteers working at every dinner, funeral and bingo. With so few people to call on, those who volunteer can get burned out quickly.

“As you get older it’s harder to stay involved in things,” noted Sanders.

Another issue is that a lot of the membership is made up of people who do not live in Sioux Lookout or Hudson, and thus cannot

volunteer locally.“We have more

associate members, now, than we used to,” said Cole. “it used to be pretty well all ordinary members, which are military, war vets, ex-servicemen.”

“We’ve got members pretty well from coast to coast,” Kiepek said.

Sioux Lookout and Hudson are not alone in their struggles.

“All Legions in

Canada suffer. i don’t think there are too many Legions that could say they’re booming,” Kiepek said.

“it’s not unique to Sioux Lookout by any means,” Wallace said.

“We’re probably, for a small town Legion, one of the stronger ones,” added Cole.

in Hudson, Starratt and Kiepek suggested establishing a project for Legion members as a potential solution.

“Lots of times you don’t need 100 people to run a good organization,” Kiepek said. “You need two or three people who are organized.”

“You have to have a project,” Starratt said.

“if you need something, everyone pulls together,” agreed Kiepek. “if we had something to work toward, you’d be surprised how many people would show up.”

What is apparent is that, though the future of the Legion is up in the air, its importance is undeniable.

“if we lose that, that’s a disaster for the town,” said Sanders. “it’s the place where all the big events happen - the Seniors Christmas dinner, which is a marvellous event, and weddings, teas, bazaars, everything happens at the Legion.”

“We’ll stick it out but it’s going to be a struggle,” Wallace said.

“i would hope very much they would be maintained,” concluded Sanders. “the Legion has been a tremendous influence in this town and the auxiliary has been a great strength too. i hope very much those two things will go on.”

The Legion has different categories of membership based on military, police, fire, or Coast Guard service, Canadian citizenship, and family military history. Members must be 18 years of age or older, and can apply at their local branch. More information and application forms can be found online at www.legion.ca.

Skip to Equip raises thousands in support of long term care

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

A huge amount of money was raised at this

year’s Bearskin Airlines Skip to equip Classic. So much was raised, in fact, that many organizers visibly cried as they leaped with joy and shouted with glee.

After all the pledges had been counted, all the donations tallied, auction monies accounted for, and the $5000 raffle money counted, this year’s skip to equip event raised $65,500.

Money raised was donated to the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre to support the expansion of long term care services in the community.

twenty-two teams of women took part in this year’s ladies charity curling weekend november 7-9 at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club.

Over the past three years the event has raised $163,000 for the health centre allowing it to expand diagnostic imaging services.

event chairperson Muriel Anderson explained how long term care become the event’s fundraising focus this year. “i think we all see aging citizens and in many cases aging family. A lot of us see patients occupying beds at the hospital that require long term care and there is a long, long waiting list. A year ago at our event there was mention made by our mayor dennis Leney that long term care negotiations were underway and he mentioned that again this weekend. the fact that was mentioned i guess kind of stuck in our minds and we know more long term care is needed.”

Commenting on this year’s event Anderson said, “i think it was

a fabulous event all around. it ran very smoothly and the spirit was there the entire weekend. i think everyone who participated enjoyed the atmosphere and the camaraderie. Just the being together for a purpose.”

Asked about the huge total raised she said, “We have a target of at least $50,000 in any given year and we certainly more than overwhelmed that. We made about $70,000 to $65,500 to the hospital foundation and we gave the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club $5000 for providing the facility and the services that we need to make the event possible. We’ve got a very dedicated committee that puts this event on and a very dedicated community that supports us.”

She added, “i think just the fact that we are raising money for long

term care resulted in receiving more dollars.”

the winner of the $5000 draw was mayor-elect doug Lawrance who donated half back to the event.

the event was played under a skins format with Laurel Hakala’s rink coming out on top.

A big hit with participants this year was the costume theme, superheroes. Many curlers sported colourful costumes.

tied for winners of the best costumes were the Kristen Carroll rink and the Jeanet Pierce rink.

top pledge earners were Marlene Macdonald – $7455, erica Mulville – $5050, Muriel Anderson – $2715 and Gwenda Wilson – $1675.

Collecting over $1000 were Ashley Vanramshorst and Kelli-dawn Baker.

Sioux Lookout Mayor dennis Leney thanked the event committee for

organizing this year’s event as well as those that participated and all those that supported the charity fundraiser.

Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre operates the William George extended Care unit which has 20 beds. there is currently a two to three year waiting list for one of those beds.

Anderson also announced Bearskin Airlines plans to continue their support of the event.

Committee member and event participant Marlene Macdonald commented on this year’s total, “Overwhelming. i mean we never know until that cheque is shown to us before they turn it around for the crowd. An absolutely overwhelming figure this year.”

She described participating in the event, “it was a hoot. everybody was fantastic. everybody

had a marvelous time. People that have never curled before curled. Once people try this out they are eager to come back another year.”

She said the event supports the community and also encourages people to try out the sport and join the club.

this year’s top pledge earner, Macdonald said it was not hard to get donations. “i’m finding more and more i have a couple of generous contributors, but getting the rest of my donations has become easier every year. i think it’s the awareness. i have had people stopping me in the grocery store asking me how they can contribute. this community is a fantastic community and i’m so proud to live here.”

Organizers are now looking forward to next year’s event slated for november 6-8.

Hudson honours its fallen, calls for increased Legion supportShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

A large number of residents lined the

street for Hudson’s 2014 remembrance day ceremony, doing their part to remember and honour the nation’s fallen.

the solemn observance began with a small parade, led by the colour guard, marching from Hudson’s community hall to the cenotaph, which was recently repainted by Faye Libler.

there, representatives from various community groups and government organizations, and other dignitaries, laid wreaths at the base of the cenotaph, blended with the familiar sounds of songs, prayers, and proclamations.

the 2014 service marked the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. it was also an important year locally.

“this year is a significant one for Candlish Memorial Legion Branch 139,” said Legion member roger Oakley. “it is our

75th anniversary.”Oakley highlighted a

problem many Canadian Legions are facing.

“Like most Legions, our numbers are decreasing,” he shared, noting the Legion needs the public in order to keep the organization going.

While there are different categories of Legion membership for serving members of the forces or police services, and their family members, affiliate voting membership is open to members of the general public who are Canadian citizens and affiliate non-voting membership is open to non-Canadian citizens and non-Commonwealth subjects who support the aims of the Legion.

during the lunch following the service, the Hudson Legion received a financial boost.

“As time marches on the number of groups in the Hudson community has dwindled,” shared Oakley. “the Hudson Chamber of Commerce is in the process of folding

and has decided to turn the funds over to this branch.”

“things are winding up there and they had money in the bank from fundraisers,” explained Brad Hyslop, past president of the Hudson Chamber of Commerce.

the Chamber of Commerce presented the Legion with a cheque for $7000.

Pelican Falls First Nations High School students placed a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of staff and students.

A large number of Hudson residents participated in this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies,

After the Remembrance Day ceremony in Hudson, guests were invited to place their poppies onto a cross.

The colour guard, parade participants, and community members rounded the cenotaph after the ceremony was finished.

Big turnout for Remembrance Day service in Sioux LookoutTim Brody

AssociAte editor

CO M M U n i t Y members came out in larger

numbers than many veterans can recall happening in years for this year’s remembrance day ceremonies in Sioux Lookout.

Led by edwin Switzer Memorial Branch 78’s Sergeant-at-Arms Mark Kendall and the colour guard, a large procession made its way to the town beach where Legion President david Williams laid the branch’s wreath.

it was standing room only on the upper floor of the Legion for the remembrance day service.

the ceremony included the singing of O’ Canada, a prayer of invocation by reverend Mark Loyal as well as the playing of the Last Post, two minutes of silence and reveille.

Williams then asked those present to remember the First nations people who long ago welcomed strangers to their land. He asked that all people remember those who served in defense of and on behalf of Canada, as well as the men and women who laid down their lives for their country, and those left to mourn them.

He also read out the names of Sioux Lookout’s First World War dead, in this, the 100th anniversary year of that conflict.

Wreaths were then laid.Sacred Heart School

Grade 8 students recited the famous remembrance day poem in Flanders Fields.

Veterans were pleased with the large turnout.

Bill Maskerine said it was nice to see so many people in attendance, especially so many children.

He said he didn’t doubt recent events in Ottawa may have contributed to such a large crowd.

Jack reek stated, “Wonderful. it’s wonderful to see such a crowd.”

Pat Mcnally-reek also felt events in Ottawa may have contributed to the large turnout.

John Cole Sr. stated, “it’s nice to see the Legion so full for remembrance day service. Sioux Lookout is a very supportive community.”

A project of his son John Cole Jr’s caught the eye of many people in attendance.

Cole Jr, a lifetime member of the Legion in Sioux Lookout, had set up a display of photographs of Sioux Lookout service men and women, past and current.

“it kind of started with a couple pictures i put out and then seeing these pictures of these guys who were my hockey coaches, friends of my father, and people i grew up with. it turned into a challenge that i had to get as many as i could. i think there were over 300 boys signed up during the Second World War and i thought i’ll see how many i can get. i think i’m over 200 now. i want to try to get a photo of every one of them.”

Anyone who has a photograph of a loved one from Sioux Lookout who served or is serving can contact Cole at the Legion.

Cole added, “i

brought some of the young kids down here one day and i showed them these pictures and i showed them Bill Maskerine’s. i showed them this is the uniform he wore and he lives on King Street.”

Cole said it is important that the people in the photographs don’t fade into history.

Legion President david Williams was thrilled with the turnout and said it was nice to see so many young people attend.

the Legion Sergeant-at-Arms Mark Kendall, a warrant officer with the third Canadian ranger Patrol, is also the vice-principal of the school in Kejick Bay, Lac Seul.

Kendall said this was his first year acting as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Legion in Sioux Lookout.

“it’s an honour to stand in front of World War two veterans that you have so much respect for and for them to look at you as an Afghan vet, it’s a kindred spirit that we have and it’s something i can’t explain.”

Larry Laviolette, a retired serviceman, spoke of the large crowd, stating, “it means to me that the community are starting to see the importance of what we did in the service and what present servicemen are doing.”

For his son Corporal Ben Laviolette, a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light infantry, this was his first time attending a remembrance day service in Sioux Lookout since he joined the service.

Ben Laviolette, who resides in Shilo, Manitoba with his family, wanted to be part of remembrance day services here where he grew up and to march with his father.

“it was amazing. Growing up here it was the first time I could pay tribute to the veterans here and to my dad. it was great,” he said.

Following lunch, which was served by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Gail roy, President of

the Auxiliary, presented Williams with a cheque for $10,000 raised by the women to support the Legion.

the ladies also declared the winners

of their remembrance day draw.

Winning a $500 grocery voucher was Al Lago.

Bra drive supports women formerly sold into traffickingShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

CLeAn out your closet while directly benefiting

women rebuilding their lives after being rescued from human trafficking.

Bra drive organizer Amanda Landgraff said the concept is pretty simple.

“We’re just asking women to look through their bras and consider donating any that they

don’t use anymore,” she explained. “As long as it’s in good condition, the Sioux Lookout bra drive will take it.”

Bras can be dropped off at new Life Assembly, at 28 First

Ave., Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until december 14.

“All the bras will go to an organization called Free the Girls,” shared Landgraff. “I first heard about

Free the Girls in my MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) magazine. they partner with organizations who rescue women from human trafficking, and provide the bras to these women as inventory for them to run their own business while they return to school.

“Many of the women were sold into prostitution at a young age, so they never finished their education. Selling bras allows them to work as little or as much as they want and many of the women in the program are making three to five times the minimum wage in their community, just by selling used bras.”

there has been a lot of interest in the drive.

“nearly all the women i have talked to have said they have bras they would donate, and they love the idea of them going toward supporting women who are making a new start,” said Landgraff. “i also created an event on Facebook and within about two days there were over 700 women invited. Some women i know have offered to collect from their friends in dryden and Kenora, to add to our donation for Free the Girls.”

“i hope we can collect at least 500 bras,

but it really depends on how many women get on board,” she added.

the local MOPS group is excited to host the bra drive in partnership with new Life Assembly.

“We’ve never done anything like this before, but we liked the idea of it and it doesn’t take a lot of time or money so we’re hoping a lot of women will support the bra drive,” said Landgraff. “i thought that sending bras to Free the Girls would be a way for us to support another group of women, many of whom are mothers just like us.”

A somewhat new group in town, MOPS is meeting regularly and hoping to increase its membership.

“the heart behind MOPS is to bring women together to laugh, cry, and embrace the journey of motherhood,” Landgraff shared. “We discuss some of the common joys and struggles of being a mom… all mothers of preschoolers are welcome, and we’d love to have more women join us.”

the group meets twice monthly from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the cafe at new Life Assembly. they will meet twice more before Christmas, on november 26 and december 10.

Donations needed for festive giving programsShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

teMPerAtUreS are dropping, snow is falling,

and the festive season is just around the corner. As in most years, in 2014 Sioux Lookouters are being urged to open their hearts to families in need by donating to local charity programs.

the First Step Women’s Shelter (FSWS) will be running its Adopt a Family program as well as the Stuff a Cruiser event.

through Adopt a Family, people are invited to sponsor a woman and her children who have left the shelter and are living free of violence. Sponsors will receive a wish list from the shelter.

Stuff a Cruiser is a one day event, november 22, during which residents are encouraged to fill a police cruiser with donations. the cruiser will be parked at the red Apple from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Fresh Market Foods.

Laura duguay, transitional housing worker/crisis support counsellor

at FSWS, explained what is most needed this holiday season.

“For Adopt a Family program we are hoping to receive donations of new toys, household items, new clothing, gift certificates, and monetary donations,” she shared. “For the Stuff a Cruiser event we are hoping to receive mostly toys and non-perishable food items and, again, gift certificates and monetary donations.”

duguay said all of these items will greatly benefit families.

“Since the program has been running for 19 years, the number of families involved has increased which shows that there is still a need to continue with this program,” she said.

About 35 families are helped by the FSWS programs each year.

“the residents and businesses of Sioux Lookout are very generous by adopting those families in need,” said duguay. “We usually gather approximately four loads of gifts from both locations for the Stuff a Cruiser program, the red Apple

and Fresh Market Foods.”the donations have

a big impact on local families.

“it is our hope that our families in need have a Christmas that they deserve and that the children feel the excitement and joy of Christmas, especially because of their current circumstances,” said duguay. “if it weren’t for the continued generosity and support of our community these programs would not be possible.”

the nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre Christmas hamper program is also up and running.

“We place boxes around town at different organizations and business, and they’re just drop off boxes for non-perishable food items,” said Cindy Phillips, hamper organizer and urban aboriginal healthy living coordinator at the centre.

the centre has placed cans at local businesses for monetary donations, and will also be accepting toys. they received all of the toys collected by the

Sioux Lookout Harley Owners Group toys for tots ride in October, and those donations will be added to the hampers.

“We’ve also placed boxes in each classroom at Sioux Mountain and Sacred Heart schools,” said Phillips. “At the two schools we’ve offered a pizza party for the class that collects the most non-perishable food.”

there has been a good effort from the schools, said Phillips. She noted the community has historically done well in

meeting the needs of the centre’s hamper recipients.

“We’ve never not been able to provide,” she said.

the friendship centre will provide tax receipts for financial donations, and Phillips is available to answer questions or give more information at 737-1903, extension 229.

ni shnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre will stop collecting for the hampers on december 12, and make deliveries on december 15, 16, and 17. Applications for the hampers are available

at the centre for those in need. the deadline for applications is december 8 and anyone who thinks they may need the service should apply, as all applications are considered.

the centre provides a turkey with each hamper as well as potatoes, milk, bread, and other staples to make a holiday dinner.

“it makes their Christmas,” said Phillips. it puts food on the table for families that can’t afford it, and presents under the tree.”

Remembrance Day at Pelican Falls First Nations High SchoolSkye Neekanco-op student

On november 10 at 11 o’clock Pelican Falls

First nations High School students and staff

stood in silence for one minute paying respect to the Canadian veterans.

Afterward, all the students were called to the gym to watch a slide show of native veterans

from all over Ontario. they also watched a clip from a war movie to show the students that war is not a good thing.

Student Harmony Lastheels said, “i thought

that the slideshow was a nice thing to do, to let the viewers know who they should be thankful for and be thinking about, not only on remembrance day, but

every day.” Canadian ranger

Mark Kendall later spoke to the students and told them about his experience being a Canadian ranger.

Georgette Keno, a student at Pelican, said, “i found what he was talking about to be very interesting. it makes me want to learn more about veterans.”

Hockey season gets underway for Warriors teams

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

tHiS season is shaping up to be an exciting

one for hockey fans in Sioux Lookout.

regular season play has begun for both the boys and girls hockey teams from Queen elizabeth district High School. Coaches for both teams invite the community to the arena to fill the bleachers.

Warriors boys hockey team head coach Kevin Berube said, “We’re off to a great start this year. Our league actually started last night (november 13) so we had our first regular season game against the St. thomas Aquinas Saints in Kenora and that was a 5-1 win for us. Our last three exhibition games against dryden High School and Fort Frances midget AA, we won all of those as well.”

Berube stated, “We have a great crew this year. i think the biggest thing for us this year is that we have a group of young men here who are really buying into the work plan

that the coaches have put together. We have a fantastic group of coaches this year and the talent level and the discipline level of the kids is very, very high. they can take what the coaches are teaching and apply it quickly on ice.

“the chemistry with the group is really good. All of those things have really come together to make our team a competitive one in the league this year.”

Berube said this year’s team will be a stronger one than last year’s. “the turnover in our players last year was high. We only had a few returning players so we did have a really young crew last year. We have about half of our guys returning this year and new guys who joined our team have come into the game ready.

“We’ve had kids coming in from Karl Schulz’s peewee AA program and bantam AA program so these kids are accustomed to playing hockey at a high level. they made the adjustment to high school hockey

very well.”Asked what he feels

his team’s strengths are, he responded, “i’m feeling strong in our depth. When we look at our line-up this year we can say that we’re four lines deep. We can put essentially any line on the ice and they’ll be an impact line.

“We’ve got a strong group of forwards, our defense core as well, we have a lot of confidence in, and we have two strong goaltenders so when we look at the roster overall, that’s probably going to be our greatest strength this year.”

The boys first home game will be a two-game series against red Lake.

Game one will be thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday at 1 p.m.

Berube encourages fans to come to the arena and watch the team in action.

“We always get great support from the community and what’s nice to see is that we are able to put together a very completive team this year. it’s going to be good to watch. the quality of high school

hockey coming out of Sioux Lookout right now is very, very high.”

Warriors girls hockey team co-coach rob Favot shared, “the girls had the opportunity to go to Fort Frances on Halloween weekend and took part in their tournament. Although we didn’t win any games, we competed with all the teams there which was a great way to start the season.

“Because we’re dealing with such a young group of players, our team is

essentially made up of Grade 9s and 10s right now with a few Grade 11s in there so it’s a pretty young team. We’re excited to build on this young team. We will have a solid core for the next few years.”

Favot said the team is excited to boast three goaltenders this season.

He invites fans to the arena to support the girls.

“With the fans cheering on the girls it gives them a little more confidence and makes it more fun to play,”

he said.the girls played their

first home game of the regular season last Sunday evening, being defeated by the visiting Fort Frances Muskies, last season’s champions.

“i think it’s going to be an exciting year for the girls and they’re only going to get better as the season goes on,” Favot concluded.

the girls next home game is december 4 against the Beaver Brae Broncos. Puck-drop is 7:30 p.m.

The Warriors work to clear the puck from in front of their net. The girls hockey team has three goalies this year, a major team strength.

The Warriors girls hockey team battles the visiting Fort Frances Muskies.
