History of Harley Davidson Trivia Question
Congratulations to January’s meeting ticket winners Tim Tefft and Brian Schmidt. The ride ticket winners were Ron
Peterson and Glen Oelrich. The 50/50 winner was Jim Berry and the trivia question winner was Chuck Husum. Congrats to all! The question this month is… “The York factory in Pennsylvania assembles the Softail, Touring, CVO,
and what other model?” Bring your answer to the February General Membership Meeting!!

Assistant Director’s Saddle On the Throttle
Hey Everyone, I hope January has been good to you all!
I look forward to a great year with many rides, events, and charities the chapter is involved with. My first ride this year was the Frosty Balls Poker Run which to say the least was eventful due to the major accident in Primm, which had the group stuck in traffic for an hour or so. Once we arrived and left the Pioneer Saloon things ran rather smoothly and we all made it safely back to LVHD.
The Chili Buns Poker run is on February 2 of which we will need volunteers for that event. Let’s make this a great event as we usually do.
General membership meeting is February 12 at RRHD, and don’t forget Valentines Day the 14th.
I am looking forward to the San Diego overnighter February 16-18 with the chapter. There are so many things to do and see there. Glen and I were talking about giving a personal tour on the Midway if enough people wanted to do this. Glen can give you the officer perspective of things and I can give the enlisted perspective of things to give everyone some insight about the life on an Aircraft Carrier. Sea Port Village is also right by the Midway which has a lot of shops to look around in walk around. There is also the Gaslamp Quarter downtown that has many great restaurants and other venues to explore. San Diego has many amazing beaches to visit and take walks on the piers or boardwalk areas. If you have never visited the San Diego Zoo, I think it would be a bucket list item.
Remember to be aware, ride safe, and RIDE ON!!!!
Dave “Grumpy” Lewis

Road Captain article LET GO OF THE MISTAKE, BUT NOT THE LESSON
Think back to when you first started riding, you were nervous, cautious and on high alert. Over time, you got more comfortable, you rode a little faster and you didn’t have to think about riding anymore, you just did it.
In those early stages of riding, you were self-analyzing what you were doing. You were thinking about friction zones and throttle position. You were figuring out how hard to apply your brakes. You were constantly evaluating mistakes and your riding became smoother.
When you ride your bike now, do you ever catch your internal voice saying “I didn’t see that” or maybe a “Whew. That was a close one”.
Well that’s a perfect time for more self-evaluation. Turn the “I didn’t see that” into “Why didn’t I see that?”.
1. Acknowledge Your Errors
Before you can learn from your mistakes, you have to accept full responsibility for your role in the outcome. That can be uncomfortable sometimes, but until you can say, “I messed up,” you aren’t ready to change.
2. Ask Yourself Tough Questions
While you don’t want to dwell on your mistakes, reflecting on them can be productive. Ask yourself a few tough questions:
• What went wrong?
• When did it go wrong?
• What could I do better next time?
3. Don’t Dwell
Beating yourself up for your mistakes won’t help you down the road. It’s important to spend that time instead, thinking about how to do better in the future. Adaptive self-reflection will allow you to alter your behavior so that you can do better the next time.
4. Move Forward With Your New-Found Wisdom
No one is immune to making mistakes – we are human, after all! Pay attention to your errors, no matter how big or how small they might seem or you are in danger of repeating the same mistakes again. Recognize that each mistake can be an opportunity to build your riding skills.

HOG WINTER ROUND UP - multi chapter get together Trip to Yuma, AZ Jan. 19-21 2019
I have been riding about two years (on the backseat of Sam's Road King ) and this was my first overnighter. I didn't know much of what to expect from this 300 mile group ride other than the fact that my packing list had to be light and we would have to sneak out of our neighborhood at 6 AM on a quiet Saturday morning. Our group left from Railroad Casino at 7 AM and had lunch at Black Bear Diner in Lake Havasu City. It was quite a treat to catch glimpses of the 45 mile long lake and beautiful Colorado river with grassy marshes, sandy shore lines, and lush green trees along the way to Yuma.
When we arrived at the hotel in Yuma, I was pretty exhausted from riding in the cold early morning air and moving like a robot from all the layers of leather clothing. Gathering for happy hour and dinner at Hooters was a fun and remarkable time to connect with others, the highlight of the night being Dave & Lauren winning the bean bag toss game (without any prize)!
Sunday was our free activity day. There were 3 options for organized riding. 1 Fisher's Landing Resort - located on the banks of the lower Colorado River. 2 Yuma Territorial Prison Tour 3 Ride to Los Algodones, Mexico
Sam and I rode to Fisher's Landing with group, and after that we rode 11 miles to the “Dental Capital of the World,” Los Algodones, Mexico, with Sandy and Jerry. Surprisingly, this small border town is filled with around 350 dental offices (it seems like almost everyone is a dentist or works for one), along with many optometrists, medical doctors and pharmacies. At one of the pharmacies, we were able to buy medicine without prescriptions and a large bottle of vanilla extract at the very low price of $2.50. After having our boots shined, we finished our international excursion with cool drinks, guacamole and chips, nachos, and music in a colorful outdoor courtyard.
This fun-filled weekend was smoothly ending its course, up until the last day. We left warm and sunny Yuma around 8 AM with four other bikes, but shortly after Quartzsite, the wind picked up and grew stronger and stronger. As we headed north, heavy gusts pushed us from left to right, up and down and everywhere (I couldn’t even take out my phone to take pictures as usual! That made some of you nervous haha.) I grabbed my helmet tightly with both hands so as to not to lose it in the air. I crouched, ducked, and covered, hoping to find shelter. My head was like a bobblehead doll, my limbs and jaw frozen, when thankfully Jim Brown decided to stop to take a short break from the beast 40 mph wind gusts at Needles, CA. In my mind, it was way too dangerous to ride a motorcycle in those conditions -- no one should be allowed to ride in that strong of a storm. Although the miserable weather made me wish for an Uber ride, it couldn't shake Laurie (and her perfect posture!) away from her love for riding. As Laurie was getting off her Softail, she smiled and said to me "I tell you what: that was fun!" There I saw my role model!
Thank you SNHOG for arranging this trip. It was an honor to ride through that storm with a group of our extraordinary HOG members!
PS: Three cheers to Sonya for fixing my vest malfunction on the spot with her silver cord and
cool tools! Thank you Sonya :)
