What is a silver carp?

•An invasive species to the Great Lakes Region•A kind of fish•A big problem to the U.S.

What does it look like?

•Weighs 60-100 lb.

•Up to 4 ft tall

•Silver•Jumping out of the water

Where is it from and how did it get here?

•China

•Clear algae from fish ponds

•Mississippi River flooded

•Swam 50 miles up each year

How is it harmful?•Eats native fish•Eats native plants•Smacks fishermen and boaters in the face

The economic impact

•Eats other fish•Reduces population for native fish•Harms the multi billion dollar fishing industry

How can we control it and prevent further

spread of it•An electrical barrier has been put up in the Illinois Canal•Have more people fish for them•Have more people eat them•Don’t use the babies as bait

What I think of it I think that the silver carp is one of the

worst invasive species and we are not doing enough about it. We should have more people fish for them and eat them. If they get in the Great Lakes it will be a very big problem so we can’t let them get in.
