Summary

The chapter opens with the tragic death of a little girl who had died ofhunger. The relationship of Anna and Andrei is seen growing strongerday by day as they face the hardships of the siege together. Desperationof food grows as their moods and feelings can easily be affected byavailability of it. All of them want food to last long so instead of eating

all in once they eat slowly, savouring each grain of food in their mouths.They are forced to eat wallpaper paste in order to survive. Andrei gets aguinea pig home for dinner, that he got from a senior surgeon whichgets Anna psyched about eating a proper meal after a long time. Annaalso gets a chance to draw Zina and her dead baby but instead she

draws the baby alive and healthy, like he was before the siege .The coldgrows as the snow thickens making it even harder for them to survive.They face difficulty in keeping themselves warm as they dont haveenough wood to keep the burzhuika burning.
