DECEMBER 2019 KISLEV - TEVET 5780The Short Schrift

As we face the end of a year and a decade I am amazed at the passage of time. How does this keep happening?!? Here at TBH, we are filling the last month of 2019 with wonderful activities and events, as evidenced in these pages.

Hanukkah AppealYou may have already received our annual Hanukkah Appeal letter. This year, we hope to raise $10,000. We have reached out, not only to TBH members, but to our supporters and friends as well. In general, I am not comfortable fundraising. But, when it comes to TBH, it’s a lot easier. We are responsible stewards of your generous donations! And it is through your generosity that we remain a vibrant and active congregational community.

Our fundraising efforts are now guided by our newly formed Development Team. The mission of this Team, led by Board Member Ed Adelson, is to… “articulate and execute coordinated short-term and longer-term TBH fundraising strategies that integrate annual giving, major giving, and legacy and bequest contributions”. This Team has long been needed, and we are fortunate that these folks stepped forward to serve: Brian Boyd, Da-vid Hanig, Michele Horaney and Charles Shelan.

Annual Campaign: Help Us Reach Our Goal!

Because TBH is your community, we are reaching out to you to ask for your support this Hanukkah season. Our annual Hanuk-kah appeal comes at a time when TBH has never been stronger or more vibrant: Our nearly 200 member families are a commu-nity engaged in making a difference in the quality of Jewish life in our region. While annual pledges constitute the majority of TBH’s income, they do not fully cover the costs of our many programs, activ-ities and initiatives that you have come to count on and that make our Congregation such a beacon of light for our commu-nity.

We have set the goal of $10,000 this Hanukkah Season, from now until the last day of Hanukkah. Watch out for the thermom-eter in our weekly email to track our progress. You can leave a donation next time you are at TBH, or at bethhatfiloh.org/donate.

THANK YOU for your support of your Congregation! TBH’s legacy as the center of Jewish life in the South Sound is strong because of you!

Please bring your friends, your children and grand-children to assist if you wish. It is a very nice group of people that you will be volunteering with. Happy Holidays to everyone. Awakened Heart ShabbatThis month’s Awakened Heart Shabbat is Saturday, December 7, at 10:30. Join us as we gather to share food, music, stories and teachings to feed our hearts and spirits, and to explore the mystical connections in our Jewish traditions. This time David Hanig will lead some singing and share some of his original poems, which are sure to inspire. Nancy will bring a story or two. We’ll also explore the V’Ahavta, the part of the Sh’ma that tells us to love God and keep God’s words in our hearts. What could this mean, and how do we go down that path in a personally authentic way? Whatever your conception (or absence of concep-tion) of the Divine, you can join us as we delve into some of Rabbi Shefa Gold’s ideas for bringing us closer to our source. Bring something for the potluck brunch if you are able. Ques-tions? Contact Nancy at [email protected]

“You that cleave to YHVH your God are alive, all of you, today.” — Deut. 4:4These words from the book of Deuteronomy speak to me about my three passions: for life, for wholeness and connection, and for the ability to be present in this moment. For life, for the vitality that comes when I am connected to my source and can let that foun-tain fill me to overflowing. For wholeness and connection, for the integration of all the separate parts that make up the “I” who I’m becoming, and for the realization of my interrelatedness with all of God’s creatures. For the ability to be present in this moment, for freedom from the compulsive mental wanderings that prevent me from experiencing the fullness of “today.”Rabbi Shefa Gold Article: “Cleaving to God: A Jewish Way of Prayer” http://evolve.reconstructingjudaism.org/cleaving-to-god

Chesed UpdatesWinter months are upon us, and with them come colds and flu. If you or someone in our community is ill or just needs some TLC, please stop by and pick up some of our delicious vegetarian soup. This will lift your spirits and heal your body. We can also do delivery on request.

Winter is here! We are doing our annual warm clothing drive during the month of December. Please donate gently used clothing to be taken the St. Michaels clothing bank. There are collection boxes located in the front foyer.

FROM CATHERINE CARMEL:FAMILY LIFE AND LEARNING DIRECTOR

Family is a word with multifaceted meanings. By definition, a family includes children and adults living in a single household. Rather than simply defining family by a dictio-nary definition though, each indi-vidual can define a family by their

own standards. Families differ in many ways, but what every family has in common is that the people who call it a family are making clear that those people are im-portant in some way to the people calling them family. I am defining family for the purpose of Family Shabbat Experiences as anyone who chooses to come and partic-ipate. You are family, and by extension, important to us. Not part of Beit Sefer? I’m okay with that. Don’t have kids at home? (Neither do I.) I’m okay with that too. All I ask is that you choose to come celebrate being Jewish with us. Our Shabbat services are short because kids get hungry. Dinner is catered, but still casual. We have a brief Shabbat learning period led by our Beit Sefer teachers and Rabbi Seth. Each learning option is geared towards an age group, but we are all learning at the same time. We end the evening sharing dessert and more prayers. Shabbat is a wonderful time to celebrate family, whether your own at home or with us in a broader sense of family. Our next Family Shabbat Experience is December 20th at 6pm. It’s free, but register so we have enough food for all. However you define family, in our Beit Sefer family, all are welcome. I hope to see you here.

L’hitraot,

Here is some information from Reyna Jasmer, our Anafim (3 & 4 grade) teacher:

We are in the middle of our G'milut Chasadim strand studying peacemakers: how we can be peacemakers with our friends and in our homes. The students are finding lots of ways they can solve problems. Class learned a bit amounts one of Judaism's greatest peacemakers, Aaron. A very interesting question came up that some are still struggling with. Is it okay to tell white lies, like Aaron did, to bring peace between two people? We are having fun with Hebrew, using movements to learn simple action verbs, flash card wars to practice the alef-bet, as well as some more traditional tasks. Before snack, we are learn-ing brachot for different foods beyond bread and we try to end class with a Jewish read aloud.

According to class:

My favorite part of class is......drawing....getting honey sticks for Hebrew practice...art...that we give tzedakeh...that there is a tzedakeh box...Hebrew flash cards What I want everyone to know about our classroom is......that we are an only girls class except for one madrichim...that the teacher is nice ...that we give tzedakeh...there is one boy ...that we are a very kind and caring class

Norma and I moved to Olympia immedi-ately after graduate school at the U.W. We moved with our very young family as our daughter, Heather, was only 14 months old. Norma began what would become a 28 year teaching career at St. Martin’s Univer-sity and I took on a very small non-profit called Community Youth Services where I remained for 36 years. Being new to town, we immediately found TBH with its 45 families and dove into helping the Temple grow and prosper. Norma along with our friends Beth Halpern and Gail Wish developed and taught in the Sunday school and I later served several terms on the board. Then, Marv Reiner and I chaired the capital campaign that bought and added on to the Temple. Eva Goldberg served our honorary chair and trusted advisor. TBH served as an anchor tethering us to the past while providing ample opportu-nities to expand our spiritual, friendship and social justice horizons. Heather grew up and had her Bat Mitzvah, then wedding. Prior to retirement, Norma and I got serious about our estate plan-ning. We were resolute in leaving a legacy to institutions that have meant so much to us. As a result, we are proud to have designated TBH as one of the beneficiaries of our estate. We are comforted in that our legacy gift along with 50 other legacy gifts TBH members have made will ensure that future generations enjoy a positive com-munity filled with meaningful services and programs that will ensure a vibrant Jewish community in the greater Olympia area.
