As the final vote for the West Course reno-vation was winding down at the Membership Meeting on April 30, and gifted architect Ja-son Straka was being hammered with ques-tions, I had a warm feeling. Maybe it was an

awakening.

Throughout the often grueling, sometimes controversial process that began in May of 2016 the journey was difficult and time consuming. For example, we examined and de-bated 31 different designs from the Fry/Straka architectur-al firm. At one point we agreed to renovate the East Course first, but received resounding opposition from members and shifted back to the West.

Yet on this night as members gathered - those in favor of the renovation and those bitterly opposed - it occurred to me that regardless, the overwhelming passion for Bel-leair Country Club is alive and well. And really, that’s what this is all about. I’ve been preaching for months, “It’s your club, your vote!” That has never been more evident than on April 30. In the end we were once again together.

Those of us who have toiled all those hours on the Reno-vation Committee were flattered when David Brett from the accounting firm CBIZ announced the vote count. Membership overwhelmingly approved the renovation at a cost not to exceed $6 million.

Seventy-three percent of the 770 golf members voted or sent in a proxy. From that, 74 percent (419) voted yes and 26 percent (147) voted no. This was the highest approval of any project requiring a membership vote at BCC in the last 20 years.

Now, we have the responsibility of working out an agree-ment with the Town of Belleair to obtain a portion of the peninsula overlooking Clearwater Bay so a breathtaking Par 3, No. 7 hole can be built. It’s important we create a solid, lasting relationship with the town.

There’s the matter of choosing a contractor from many who have submitted bids to do the actual work. Mark down in your 2020 calendars that the West Course will close on Monday, March 16, following completion of the 33rd Member-Guest (March 12, 13, 14).

The West Course, which will have returned to the origi-nal Donald Ross design, will re-open on Nov. 1.

Between now and then there will be more decisions, deci-

sions, decisions….

As this major process moves forward we all have the same goal: To continue making Belleair Country Club better!

CONGRATULATIONS to Ron Campbell and Mark Rometty for winning Belleair Country Club’s exciting 32nd annual Men’s Member–Guest Golf Tournament.

The Member-Guest, of course, is our premier golf event each year and the latest tournament didn’t disappoint. Campbell and his guest tied after 18 holes in the final day’s Shoot-Out with Bill Miller and his guest Matt Schaeffer. The Campbell team then won the playoff, taking the cham-pionship in two of the last three years.

John Jassmann and guest Greg Howe won the first day’s Scramble on the East Course, while John Brennan and Pat-rick Brennan won on the West Course.

The tournament’s start, with the full field of 192 play-ers poised, was delayed an hour and 52 minutes the first day (April 25), but the skies cleared for beautiful weather through Saturday’s stirring finish.

Kudos to Jim Slattery and his golf staff, not to mention Superintendent Andy Neiswender and his army of work-ers, who had the courses in magnificent condition.

“There were no injuries and no serious arguments,” Slat-tery jests. “Just spirited competition!”

LOAN DETAILS: Many members have asked how we’re going to pay for the West Course renovation and have in-quired about details of the necessary loan, financing, etc.

Months ago our Treasurer, Tom McVay, General Manager, Ed Shaughnessy, and Chief Financial Officer, Elaine Wahl, began laying the groundwork to obtain the necessary financ-ing for the renovation. Three financial institutions submit-ted proposals. Ultimately, SunTrust Bank was chosen.

I am pleased to report we have secured a reducing re-volver credit line of $6 million and have locked in a rate of 4.11 percent for a 10-year period in a refinancing of our current debt.

“The decision to lock in this rate was to avoid the risk of possible rising interest rates,” says Shaughnessy. “We be-lieve this action to be financially prudent and that this was a very good rate.”

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY HAL BODLEY, CLUB PRESIDENT 2019

The Shield June - July 2019

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE.. .continued

SAY HELLO to Mike Li, our new dining room manager. It’s difficult to miss Mike who seems to always have an infectious smile. And besides that, he’s no stranger to Belleair Country Club. He’s previous-ly served as an auto valet, worked in the snack shack and was once a waiter.

Li, who has an MBA in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Schiller In-ternational University, returns to our club after serving as manager at the Koizi Sushi Restaurant in New Port Richey.

“It is my mission, my goal to make every dining experience here as comfortable and enjoyable as possible,” he says.

NO LAZY DAYS: There won’t be any “Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer” at your club. During the usually slower months when many members are away, we take this oppor-tunity to complete capital projects that improve the club.

Here’s a once-over-lightly: A small maintenance shop was recently rebuilt at the south side of the main clubhouse…In May we’re changing out our chillers. Chillers? They’re the heart of our air conditioning system…In June the clubhouse roof is scheduled to be changed…In July new laundry equipment will be installed in the club’s laundry facilities…In August, if governmental approval (permits) can be secured, a new water well will be installed on the East Golf Course as well as piping to deliver the water to our extensive irrigation system…And finally, if plans can be finalized, the main lobby of the clubhouse will be reno-vated and new furniture purchased.

And, oh, by the way, by now you’ve surely noticed Duke Energy vehicles around the property. Duke is upgrading the power lines and installing them underground begin-ning at the West end of the entrance bridge. Spectrum cable and internet lines will also be buried.

AERATION, AERATION: Andy says make sure you jot down the upcoming schedule for aeration of our golf courses:

West – May 7 to May 23 (opening at 11 a.m. on May 24).

East – June 3 to June 20 (open at 11 a.m. June 21).

West – Aug 12 to Aug 29 (open at 11 a.m. Aug 30).

East – Sept 3 to Sept 19 (open at 1 p.m. Sept 20).

The West Course will be over-seeded Oct 28 –Nov 1, and Nov 4-7

NEWSY NOTES: After 39 years – she started in 1980 – Becky Riehm has retired from her chores in the Golf Shop. We wish her the best…Becky’s departure opened the door for Eric Blanchard, who’s already helped many of us as he works behind the counter. Eric moved into the Golf Shop after serving as a starter…The Golf and Green Committees are working with Director of Golf Jim Slattery to improve the quality of the balls we use on the driving range…Speaking of Slattery, during the first week of May he led a group of BCC members on a journey to Hawaii. They played tournament golf on several of the is-land’s most prestigious courses…Croquet players Troy and Jim Robinson staged what they called their Eastern Bunny Event and nearly 20 members attended…Golf Commit-tee members Gen. Joe Oder and Tom Kurey are examin-ing the club’s policy on guest and reciprocal play…Along those lines, we have a five-year agreement with the Bel-leview Inn, allowing its guests to play golf here and use the dining facilities. Since the hotel opened in December, an average of fewer than two guests have played golf per day. They’re charged $175.00 per person plus tax per round… By the end of the year we’ll have a new fleet of golf carts. Our current lease for the 140 carts ends Dec 31. Between now and then we’ll be negotiating with several companies.

BOTTOM LINE: I cannot thank you enough for your support. I welcome comments, suggestions, and anything else on your mind. You can always contact me at [email protected].

Until next time, thanks for listening…. Hal

WHEN PAIN TALKS When pain talks to you, listen clearly. When pain says stop, it’s easy. Stop. When pain is asking for attention, it requires more thought and intelligent action. It’s like the expression, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If your wheel starts making a noise, you don’t just stop using the car, you address the problem and fix it in order to continue driving. If soft tissue tears or dense tissue fractures, stop and give it time to heal. After proper rest time and when the tissue mends, then you must work to strengthen it. When tissue becomes inflamed it needs attention. Taking an anti-inflammatory medication is one step in the right direction. Regaining qual-ity movement is step two. If you listen right away when your body is speaking at a whisper, you will be able to get past the issue quickly with minor setback. If you wait until your pain is screaming, it will take longer to fix the problem. I have seen many people who just decided to avoid any movement that had any pain. Today, to no surprise, they have limited their movements. Now when trying to move, they have joints that are almost frozen and/or in great pain. Although this may seem like it’s too late to feel better, it is not. At this point it takes more patience, time, and the know-how to push the proper way and amount. It doesn’t have to be all downhill after a certain time. I have helped and watched people of all ages, with lots of old injuries, move better and feel better. Myself included. I have had plenty of injuries in my 49 years and I felt the difference from resting too much or pushing the injury through quality movement. I feel better when I move. Trust me. It’s not too late to move better and feel better.

Over 900 families celebrated Easter at Belleair Country Club this year! More than 100 children participated in the junior festivities with egg hunt, pony rides, and petting zoo! The Club was abundant with joy and laughter that day!

On Thursday, April 11, a group of some 20 croquet members, from beginners to seasoned players, got together for a fun af-ternoon of golf croquet organized by Troy and Jim Robinson. To give everybody a chance to make a wicket or two, beginners and more advanced players were mixed and matched! At all times, 2 or 3 games were in action giving everyone a chance to have a shot at a win! To mark the occasion, everyone was provided with Bunny Ears. A nice breeze kept the temperature in check. It could not have been a more enjoyable afternoon. Last but not least, a drawing for an Easter basket provided by the Robinsons was held. Ann Schroderheim was the lucky winner walking off with an early Easter gift. Many thanks to Troy and Jim and other croquet members who made this a most enjoyable, no-stress croquet afternoon. Most of us closed the evening with a well-deserved Happy Hour and a light meal at the Club.Vreny Schillmoller

CAMPBELL-ROMETTY MUST WORK FOR SECOND MEMBER-GUEST VICTORY

Ron Campbell and Mark Rometty just needed a break. They knew they could play with the “big boys” if they could some-how work their way into the twenty team Men’s Member-Guest “Shootout”. In 2016, they won the Member-Guest so they knew exactly how to fight through both the “Mini-Shootout” (5 teams) and the “Final Shootout” (4 winning teams). After playing ex-cellent golf for two days, they were defeated in only one match out of five to the eventual flight winner, Henrie Descheemaeker and Les Matthews. This match nearly eliminated Campbell and Rometty, but a new opportunity arose when they qualified for the Alternate-Shot shootout competition as the team with the most points in the event to not win their flight. Surviving the “mini shootout” as they eliminated four teams, they were very calm and collected as they began the three-hole final shootout. The shot of the tournament came from Ron Campbell on the first hole, when he hit the team’s third shot from a fairway bunker to fif-teen feet! Mr. Rometty also came through by draining the 15-foot par putt to keep them alive in the shootout! They survived to the final hole (#18 East) against gritty competitors Bill Miller and guest Matt Schaeffer. This duo put up a tremendous fight tying the 18th hole to force one extra hole before succumbing to our deserving champions. Campbell and Rometty remembered their first Member-Guest victory had to be earned, but this win was “very draining” according to Campbell! They couldn’t celebrate soon enough! Superb victory gentlemen – congratulations and well earned! The flight winners should all be proud! Well played gentlemen!

HALL –WILDER WIN MEMBER-GUEST IN DRAMATIC FASHION!

Congratulations to Julia Hall (l) and Karen Wilder (r) for capturing the 2019 Ladies Member-Guest! The pres-sure did not seem to phase the duo as they stayed calm and consistent throughout the Alternate-Shot format during the “shootout”. The theatrics occurred on the 18th green where Hall & Wilder were on the back of the green and the team of Cindi Paganini & Kathy Ar-nold was on the front fringe of the green. Mrs. Hall’s team was away so she lined up the 42-footer with complete concentration. The ball started on an exceptional line, went slightly left, then slightly right magically finding its way to the bottom of the hole! The large crowd that had gathered erupted into a roar!
