The Shepherd’s Crook The Church of the Good Shepherd Pitman, NJ The Rev. Susan E. Osborne-Mott Rector March/April 2016 “We Love Our Church” A Journey into Lent What are we supposed to do with Lent? We are taught that Lent is a time for repentance. But what does repentance mean to you? Have you set aside a day for wearing sackcloth (nice, scratchy burlap), and have you gathered ashes from your fireplace or BBQ and are you ready to smear them all over yourself? And then walk through the streets of Pitman, past Mannino’s for example, crying out “Forgive me Lord!”… loudly. I doubt that many of us are prepared to do that. I know I’m not. So what do we do with Lent? Do we deprive ourselves of chocolate (oh, the pain, the anguish…) or maybe no cocktail hour? Or do we adopt a discipline? “I vow to…” That’s all well and good, but Jesus never commanded us to take on pain to remind ourselves of him. Jesus’ only commandments to us are to love him and to love each other. If you decide to take on a discipline, that can be a wonderful thing, but does that discipline remind you of God’s love for you? Does that discipline remind you of Jesus’ real and constant presence in your life? We don’t need to ask Jesus to walk with us. We don’t need to earn his companionship. Jesus is already with us, all the time! If our Lenten disciplines remind us of that, then they are worthwhile. May I suggest a journey, a journey into Lent? We are so fortunate that we are a liturgical church. We not only listen to words, we speak them, we sing them, adding melody to sacred language. We have actions, gestures. We make the sign of the Cross. We clasp our hands together in prayer. We kneel (as able!). We exchange signs of Peace with each other in many different ways, with handshakes, with hugs, with kisses. We bow our heads to show humility and to help us focus our prayer. We partake of bread and wine that is blessed and becomes for us the Body and Blood of Jesus, to remind us of his perfect sacrifice. We will listen to the choir sing a beautiful Cantata, “ Behold! God’s Holy Lamb” on Sunday, March 13. There are so many gestures in the church. Holy Week, in particular is filled with gesture and these gestures are as filled with meaning as we make them. Palm Sunday begins with such joy! We come in waving our palms, singing. But as the service progresses, the mood becomes more and more somber and our worship moves into our reading of the Passion, which will be moved to the end of the service, after the Eucharist. We end the service in quiet, beginning our Holy Week. Consider Maundy Thursday, the evening of the foot washing. We wash each other’s feet, just as Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. This is daunting for many of us. Many people don’t like showing their feet to others. It’s OK at the beach, but in church!?! It’s too naked, too vulnerable. That’s the point. We are meant to be vulnerable to each other. For just these few moments in time, consider that experience. Jesus asks us “Do you know what I have done to you?” Do we? The altar is stripped and the reserve (left over) sacrament is taken to the Lady Alter, which is decorated like a garden, like the garden surrounding Jesus’ tomb. Following the service we can sit there in contemplation and/or we can walk the Labyrinth in the Parish Hall, a wonderful contemplative exercise. On Good Friday we hear the reading of the Passion according to John and reverence the Cross. Finally, if you wish to partake of the Eucharist, none is blessed anew. We serve from the sacrament reserved the night before. All is consumed. Jesus is in the tomb so no lamp is lit to indicate His presence among us. The Great Vigil of Easter is on Saturday, when Jesus “passed over from death to life.” We begin in darkness and then the new fire is kindled, signifying new life in Jesus’ return to us. We light the Paschal candle from the new fire and it in turn lights candles held by each of us. The light grows! We recount stories of God’s salvation and renew our Baptismal vows. The Easter Vigil is traditionally a time for adult baptism. If you haven’t been baptized and wish to be, see me. Just before the Eucharist, we call out the first Alleluias of the Easter season! And so we begin Easter with renewed life. I invite you to join me on this Lenten journey. This is a journey we take together to strengthen and enrich our life together. From year to year, it’s never quite the same. If we invest ourselves in the journey, we learn and grow, inside and out, through Lent and beyond! Mother Susan

“We Love Our Church”

A Journey into Lent

What are we supposed to do with Lent? We are taught that Lent is a time for repentance. But what does

repentance mean to you? Have you set aside a day for wearing sackcloth (nice, scratchy burlap), and have you

gathered ashes from your fireplace or BBQ and are you ready to smear them all over yourself? And then walk

through the streets of Pitman, past Mannino’s for example, crying out “Forgive me Lord!”… loudly. I doubt that

many of us are prepared to do that. I know I’m not.

So what do we do with Lent? Do we deprive ourselves of chocolate (oh, the pain, the anguish…) or maybe no

cocktail hour? Or do we adopt a discipline? “I vow to…” That’s all well and good, but Jesus never commanded us to

take on pain to remind ourselves of him. Jesus’ only commandments to us are to love him and to love each other.

If you decide to take on a discipline, that can be a wonderful thing, but does that discipline remind you of God’s

love for you? Does that discipline remind you of Jesus’ real and constant presence in your life? We don’t need to ask

Jesus to walk with us. We don’t need to earn his companionship. Jesus is already with us, all the time! If our Lenten

disciplines remind us of that, then they are worthwhile.

May I suggest a journey, a journey into Lent? We are so fortunate that we are a liturgical church. We not only

listen to words, we speak them, we sing them, adding melody to sacred language. We have actions, gestures. We

make the sign of the Cross. We clasp our hands together in prayer. We kneel (as able!). We exchange signs of

Peace with each other in many different ways, with handshakes, with hugs, with kisses. We bow our heads to show

humility and to help us focus our prayer. We partake of bread and wine that is blessed and becomes for us the

Body and Blood of Jesus, to remind us of his perfect sacrifice. We will listen to the choir sing a beautiful Cantata, “

Behold! God’s Holy Lamb” on Sunday, March 13. There are so many gestures in the church. Holy Week, in particular

is filled with gesture and these gestures are as filled with meaning as we make them.

Palm Sunday begins with such joy! We come in waving our palms, singing. But as the service progresses, the

mood becomes more and more somber and our worship moves into our reading of the Passion, which will be moved

to the end of the service, after the Eucharist. We end the service in quiet, beginning our Holy Week.

Consider Maundy Thursday, the evening of the foot washing. We wash each other’s feet, just as Jesus washed his

disciples’ feet. This is daunting for many of us. Many people don’t like showing their feet to others. It’s OK at the

beach, but in church!?! It’s too naked, too vulnerable. That’s the point. We are meant to be vulnerable to each other.

For just these few moments in time, consider that experience. Jesus asks us “Do you know what I have done to you?”

Do we? The altar is stripped and the reserve (left over) sacrament is taken to the Lady Alter, which is decorated like

a garden, like the garden surrounding Jesus’ tomb. Following the service we can sit there in contemplation and/or

we can walk the Labyrinth in the Parish Hall, a wonderful contemplative exercise.

On Good Friday we hear the reading of the Passion according to John and reverence the Cross. Finally, if you

wish to partake of the Eucharist, none is blessed anew. We serve from the sacrament reserved the night before. All

is consumed. Jesus is in the tomb so no lamp is lit to indicate His presence among us.

The Great Vigil of Easter is on Saturday, when Jesus “passed over from death to life.” We begin in darkness

and then the new fire is kindled, signifying new life in Jesus’ return to us. We light the Paschal candle from the new

fire and it in turn lights candles held by each of us. The light grows! We recount stories of God’s salvation and renew

our Baptismal vows. The Easter Vigil is traditionally a time for adult baptism. If you haven’t been baptized and wish

to be, see me.

Just before the Eucharist, we call out the first Alleluias of the Easter season! And so we begin Easter with renewed

life. I invite you to join me on this Lenten journey. This is a journey we take together to strengthen and enrich our life

together. From year to year, it’s never quite the same. If we invest ourselves in the journey, we learn and grow,

inside and out, through Lent and beyond!

RUN RUN RUN RUN! To Bible Study!

Tuesdays @ 6:30 PM, 7 after Easter!

Right now we are studying the stories of some famous

runners – Jonah and the Prodigal Son. Please join us! When

we really dig into the Bible we find that some of our pre-

conceived notions are not entirely accurate. Jonah

volunteered to go overboard, for example! How do we feel

about the Prodigal Son’s brother?

We will take a break for Holy Week and Easter Week.

Bible Study will resume after Easter on Tuesday, April 5 @

7PM.

Inquirer’s Group

We are meeting on the first Sundays of March and April at 11:30 a.m. in the Conference Room. We are using the series "Living the Questions" and our focus will be: (March) "Thinking Theologically", (April) Evil, Suffering & A God of Love" and (May) Prayer, Intimacy with God."

Church History Display

Please take a moment to consider whether you have something that you could share with our parish family in the glass case in the parish hall that has become our Church History Museum. It is a wonderful opportunity to share our past histories with those who are new or younger members. I am looking for new items to display. I try to rotate the exhibit every 4 months and I have only enough items for two more exhibits. Do you have any old pictures, Bibles, Prayer Books, Bible markers, marriage certificates, birth certificates, etc. that you could share? Your items will be cared for properly and returned to you at the end of the exhibit.

Thank you so much! Ellie Dunn

Our Thursday morning Lenten Study: "Who is this Man" will meet following Morning Prayer on Thursdays, February 25 (“The Power of Forgiveness”), March 3 (“Why It's a Small World After All”) and March 10 (“Three Days That Changed the World”).

Behold! God's Holy Lamb, a Cantata worship experience recalling the sacrifice of Jesus.

On Sunday, March 13, for the 10 AM service, our choir will sing this beautiful composiiton that follows the events of Holy Week from Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his death on the cross. Music and orchestration is by Mark Hayes. Concept and lyrics are by John Parker. Narration is by Audra Parker. What a wonderful way to prepare for Holy Week!

OUR PRAY-ERS MINISTRY

Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm. After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers by the Lady Altar who will be willing to offer prayers for you. These prayers can be offered in joy for a Blessing you have received, or it can be to help ease a burden which lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful ministry of our parish. All prayers are condiential.

Pray-er Ministry

Anyone interested in being a Pray-er Minister at the Saturday night or Sunday services please contact Cindy Taglienti @ 227-1566 or [email protected].

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them.

I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere.

If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood.
