THE SHEPHERD’S CALL HAPPY NEW YEAR—JAN/ FEB 2020 Empowering Youth Through Service If youve attended a SCAS Lunch NLife in the past 10 years, youve without a doubt savored a delicious meal and dessert, but did you know where and how it was made? Our LNLs are catered by the S. John Davis Career Centers Culinary Arts Class. The Davis Center, located in Falls Church, is a unique school focused on vocational and independent living skills for students with disabilities. Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools system, it works collaboratively as a school community to assess and implement appropriate individualized instruction. Up to the age of 22 years old, students may receive an Applied Studies Degree and/ or High School Diploma along with a trade that continues with the pupil into adulthood. The Culinary Arts class I instruct carry on the real world life and social skills I teach them beyond graduation and into everyday life, Instructor Lauren Forshay tells us. By taking them to outings to the grocery store, having them interact with large groups at luncheons, the community is then the students classroom. So how can SCAS help the students in their occupations? Ms. Forshay says, Just be welcom- ing. Ask them about the food they prepared. Some can be shy, but they are proud of what they can do. SCAS is a proud supporter of the Davis Center. To learn more about the Davis Center, check out their website at https://daviscenter.fcps.edu/. **Conquer the Clutter Lunch NLife** When it comes to organizing, why does it some- times feel like an uphill battle? Recent Events: We hosted 2 spectacular LNL’s in Nov & Dec. Ms. Peggy Newhall gave quite a performance for the SCAS Nov 14th at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. Her arrangement of Danny Boy stirred emotions. Many thanks to Pat Sawhney for the gorgeous table arrangements. Our holiday luncheon on Dec 12th at AUMC was festive, musical and bright, thanks to Alice & Pete Snitzer, Bill & Lucylle Dubbert (the poinsettas were beautiful), and so many SCAS volunteers. Conductor

Pat Vaughn delighted with the Annandale H.S. Women’s Choir singing 3 beautiful Christmas songs. Guitarist Dave Stugress gave us a sing-a-long with Jingle Bells! Thank to Brightview Senior Living—Woodburn for sponsoring and dressing up as elves! As always, thank you to everyone who attended.

Would you like to give back and have a few hours a month to help SCAS as a volunteer? Lunch N’ Life committee—help set up and clean, or locate the venue & plan LNL entertainers. Day Trip committee— research and plan trips. Board Members—help guide SCAS. Outreach—contact churches and businesses. Drivers—volunteer transportation services are always needed.

The Shepherd’s Center of Annandale Springfield (SCAS)

SCAS is a non-profit interfaith organization sponsored by area congregations & community groups to serve & enrich seniors 50 & older in the Annandale, Springfield, and sections of Alexandria, Virginia. Since 2004, SCAS has been providing programs for transportation, socialization and learning for senior adults. See our website for our Annual Report.

Americana Drive Clean Up

The weather was cooperative for the Americana Clean Up event on November 11th. SCAS members Martha Lowe

and Erin O’Reilly volunteered to help. They cleaned litter up along Americana, which is near SCAS’s office. Making our community a better place to live is a priority of SCAS. The event was hosted by VDOT’s Adopt A Highway. SCAS would like to thank the police officers who helped traffic stay calm to keep the volunteers safe!

SCAS Official Board Election News SCAS Board member Barbara Gatorian was newly elected to serve as Board Chair for the upcoming year—2020. Longtime Board Chair Dick Stewart is maintaining his Board member status with continued involvement in the Lunch N’ Life committee. We welcome new Board members Jeff Shearer & Jenai Rasmussen.

Difference Makers Grant SCAS recently received part of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s Difference Makers Grant. As per POP’s website, a difference maker is an individual or small organization that is making a continued impact for the good of others. This could be a neighborhood impact, a Springfield community impact, or even something that impacts the wider Northern Virginia. SCAS is honored to be able to call itself a Difference Maker. We want to thank POP for supporting our community’s mission with this grant.

Medicare Questions? We don’t know what we don’t know…And what we think we know for sure, maybe we don’t know as well as we think we know. Medicare is a confusing topic. It’s not ‘one size fits all,’ and it’s not a single once-in-a-lifetime choice and you’re done. Life changes, options change. Want to discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C or D? Do you know what a Medicare Advantage Plan is and why it may or may not be appropriate for you? Your answers are a phone call away. Call Maddie Sharpe at 703-924-0022 or [email protected].
