The Shepherds Staff Dear Members of Shepherd of the Hills, Dr. Luther once referred to the devil as the origi- nator of sorrowful anxiees and restless troubles. Contrasng this unholy influence that the devil has on us and our world, Jesus is a source of peaceful rest and certain hope in the promise of Gods love, mercy and kindness. Someday, when we are in heaven- our true homeland, we will know nothing but the Lords comfort and reassuring love. We will have only very faint, harmless memories of the sorrowful anxiees and restless troubles we experienced in this disturbed, earthly seng. For now, it serves Gods holy purposes for us to simply live by faith that His promises will be fully realized when it is pleasing to Him. In the meanme, it enriches and strengthens our souls to give Him glory and to remember Jesus at all mes. Please let me know if you are having difficulty securing a copy of the new Luthers Small Catechism with Explanaon, which was released by Concordia Publishing House in No- vember of 2017. It is definitely the greatest Chrisan hand- book I have ever seen, and I believe that those who commit themselves to studying it cover to cover will experience a major leap forward in their self-confidence regarding their Chrisan faith. Aſter all, no one would want to be only mod- erately sure or just half certain of what their church teaches and believes. Thankfully, as Missouri Synod Lutherans, we cling exclusively to the doctrines and tradions leſt behind by the apostles themselves, and the new Catechism with Ex- planaon bears that out quite splendidly. The Shepherd’s Staff

Dear Members of Shepherd of the Hills, Dr. Luther once referred to the devil as “the origi-nator of sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles.” Contrasting this unholy influence that the devil has on us and our world, Jesus is a source of peaceful rest

and certain hope in the promise of God’s love, mercy and kindness. Someday, when we are in heaven- our true homeland, we will know nothing but the Lord’s comfort and reassuring love. We will have only very faint, harmless memories of the sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles we experienced in this disturbed, earthly setting. For now, it serves God’s holy purposes for us to simply live by faith that His promises will be fully realized when it is pleasing to Him. In the meantime, it enriches and strengthens our souls to give Him glory and to remember Jesus at all times. Please let me know if you are having difficulty securing a copy of the new Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation, which was released by Concordia Publishing House in No-vember of 2017. It is definitely the greatest Christian hand-book I have ever seen, and I believe that those who commit themselves to studying it cover to cover will experience a major leap forward in their self-confidence regarding their Christian faith. After all, no one would want to be only mod-erately sure or just half certain of what their church teaches and believes. Thankfully, as Missouri Synod Lutherans, we cling exclusively to the doctrines and traditions left behind by the apostles themselves, and the new Catechism with Ex-planation bears that out quite splendidly. Your pastor loves you very much!! Pastor Andrew

The President’s Message Don Guckenberger, Council President

How do we serve and obey God? That is the theme I established for the council back in

January. I ‘borrowed’ this from Luther’s Small Catechism, because I like Dr Luther’s explana-

tion: ‘God puts me into a network of relationships with the people around me whom I am

called upon to serve.’ This not only applies to the council but to our entire congregation. It is

fitting to review this theme as Pastor Andrew begins studying the 2017 version of this im-

portant book in his Sunday Bible classes.

This past month provides wonderful examples of how ‘serve and obey God’ is alive in our

congregation. Fred Mundt and his building committee have completed the building plans

and have published them on our church website, Bill Hinterman, John Wedlund and Phil Win-

terroth have done wonders expanding the kitchen, creating secure storage for our quilters and

preparing to relocate the coffee bar. They plan to move the stairs this month. LWML hosted

Pat Paavola who gave an informative talk on the House of Hope in Haiti – a ministry that we

actively and enthusiastically support. Early Childhood Ministry began the first summer pro-

gram for area children from which we learned key lessons for going forward with ways to ex-

pand our outreach to children in the community. Bill Baessler has been instrumental in this

and is making good progress in beginning a KICK Sunday School. And our youth… they host-

ed a ‘Decades Dance’ that drew such luminaries as Danny & Sandy from Grease – it was a joy-

ous time as all got to relive the music and dress of their favorite decade. And this past Sunday

the youth ran a car wash to raise funds for their attending the National Youth Gathering next

year in Minneapolis. Some cars got washed, but all the kids got ‘washed’ also. And we culmi-

nated the month with nine people joining our congregation, followed by Jan Simko and her

Growth Team hosting another delicious and outstanding Pot Luck Blessing. Thanks be to

God!

Recently we asked Pastor to lead prayers to find a contractor to bid on the Fellowship Hall

and Youth Room expansion. We started with seven potential construction companies and so

far three have declined to bid. Our good Pastor did as we asked - ‘ it is clear that we must

STORM heaven with our earnest appeal’ he wrote in his email. I, too, ask you to continue your

prayers, and I would also ask you to end your prayers with ‘Thy Will Be Done.’ I love and trust

God and am constantly asking him to guide me so that I carry out His will. Sometimes that

becomes very difficult as I strive to complete our plans. As your council president I continually

need to remind myself that God wants me to ‘Serve and Obey’ Him. Our church congregation

is the ‘network of relationships’ Dr Luther was referring to. And individually and collectively

we are called to upon to serve Him. I am excited to see what God has in store for us as we all

‘storm heaven’ with our prayers.

Most of the children in our church partner attend schools that are taught in the Tamil lan-guage. There are some that attend English language schools. This means that all their topics are taught in English. However, they live in communities which primarily speak Tamil and Sinhala, not English. Often their parents speak no or little English.

This means that it is difficult or impossible for the parents to provide help with their school work, nor are they able to practice English outside of school.

I was asked to teach an English language Bible class for the youth in the upcountry. I was ea-ger to do this.

The class has been a real blessing for me. I enjoy connecting with the youth and look forward to building lasting relationships with them. Most important, I pray that their faith will be strength-ened and their relation with Jesus.

The youth are eager to learn about the Bible and do far better with English than I am with Tam-il. Whether I am teaching children in English or training pastors or encouraging parishioners or tell-ing a taxi driver about Jesus, this is all God’s work. I am thankful and humbled that God would en-trust us with participating in His work here in Sri Lanka. Thank you for partnering with us.

We took a trip to visit some cultural sites in Sri Lanka. We visited the cave temples at Dambulla, the ancient ruins at Anuradhapura, and ruins of the ancient fortress at

Sigiriya. Liberty and Skye competed in a school drama competition. We also celebrated Skye’s 15th birthday. as she prepares to begin university

in the U.S.

GIVE THANKS FOR:

K.I.C.K. TIME SUNDAYS ARE COMING

K.I.C.K. (Kids In Christ’s Kingdom) Time is a new Bible study class for chil-dren in grades 1-5 and it is coming to SOTH on Sunday September 9th. Entitled “The Thread of Promise”, it follows God’s promise of salvation all through the Scriptures. It’s purpose is to teach our children the origins of God in the Bible and important Bible accounts so that they not only grow in their faith and rela-tionship with God, but are able to understand the foundations of our faith. We will be offering the classes on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month through De-cember at which time the K.I.C.K. Time team will determine whether to continue with the program. Children will leave for class after the reading of the Gospel les-son in the 2nd service. The class will last approximately 35 to 40 minutes and will use a variety of teaching methods, such as power point, story telling, and videos. Registration is through the month of August (see registration sheet in this News-letter).

Don’t let the children in your life miss learning about God and His promise of salvation in the most important book ever written! Fill out the registration form and turn it in to the Gathering Place today!

Visiting Friends is an important, if not well known group in our church. Our mission is to make sure that every member knows that, as a congregation, we care about each other. If you know of someone who is struggling with health or personal issues, receiving a card of car-ing can do so much knowing that someone cares.

Visiting Friends not only send cards, we make phone calls to check on members, we make visits to those in need of cheering up and we occasionally deliver flowers donated by those who supply flowers for the Sunday services.

If this worthwhile mission is something that would bring you joy, knowing you are reach-ing out to members in need, please contact Toni McCarty at 931-337-0143 or email her at [email protected] This committee meets on the second Monday of every month.

Visiting Friends Toni McCarty, Chairman

Sheepdogs Wayne Croy, Chairman

The Sheepdogs conducted a tornado drill on July 15. The drill was orderly and very beneficial in deter-mining where improvements and adjustments can be made for future drills. We would like to thank the congregation for their cooperation.

When outside in the hot, humid summer weather, be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Wear loose fitting light-colored clothing and be sure to drink plenty of water so your body stays hydrated.

Heat Exhaustion: a condition that is marked weakness, nausea, dizziness and profuse sweating that results from physical exertion in a hot environment. Heat exhaustion can be treated by moving to a cool air-conditioned place.

Heat Stroke: a condition marked by cessation of sweating, extremely high body temperature and collapse that results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This condition requires immediate medical treatment. Call 911.

STEPHEN MINISTRY Rev. Paul H. Wiegert, Stephen Ministry Director

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: For the past twelve years I have served as the “Director of Stephen Ministry”. It has been a wonderful journey and very fulfilling. I cannot say how much I have appreciated the Stephen Ministers that have served so faithfully during this time. They were so faithful in attending the monthly meetings where we studied togeth-er how we could better serve our care-receivers that God had placed before us. It was fun training those who wanted to become a Stephen Minister. For 26 weeks and over 50 hours of training we grew more and more in Christian love and joy knowing that we could make a positive difference in the lives of those who were hurting and in need of support.

God has blessed our team with new Stephen Ministers coming into our congre-gation from congregations who had the Stephen Ministry program. Among those who came to us, several had leadership training. God has blessed us in that three Stephen Ministers have just come back from a week of intense leadership training so that now we have five in our group that have leadership training.

With that in mind, I am resigning my role as “Director of Stephen Ministry” I want to say thank you to the congregation for supporting Stephen Ministry and I pray that the members of SOTH will make use of this wonderful ministry if and when difficulties in your life arise. I will also continue to pray for those who are working hard to be of service to you by giving of their time to help people in need. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Paul H. Wiegert Director of Stephen Ministry

Dear Pastor Paul,

All the Stephen Ministers want to thank Pastor Paul for his leadership of our ministry over these past years. He had many tasks to carry out, as our only leader, so he was very busy filling that role by himself.

We'll miss you Pastor Paul, not just your leadership, but as a co-worker and good friend!

Property Guys John Wedlund, Chairman

If you have been in the Fellowship hall during the week, in the last couple of months, you might have seen Bill Hinterman or Phil Winterroth working. These two guys have dedicated many hardworking hours to our fair share of the "Fellowship hall expansion project". Phil has done a lot of work building and changing walls, installing Sheetrock panels, painting, and installing doors. Bill has been designing the reconfiguration of electrical systems and installing switch-es boxes and outlets to coincide with the expansion plans. It is time folks for us to give these guys a hug, hand shake, or just a thank you for their efforts. Bill and Phil are perfectionist and are willing to serve our church and our Lord. I am so blessed to be able to work with those two guys and the rest of our hardwork-ing "Property crew" and volunteers. I love all of them. It has never been better. To God be the glory.

John & Mary Beck’s grandson , Noah, is the youngest Property Guy. And we so appreciate his willingness to help by pruning our roses. Great Job Noah. Thank you very much.

Brightening up the cross in the Columbarium garden are, Karan Wedlund, Susie Powers, Earl & Jan Leschinski, Jim Hardy and not pictured Bill Reed and John Wedlund.

Bill Hinterman sorting out the electrical for our Fellowship Hall expansion. Not pictured, Phil Win-terroth, who did the sheetrock work and painting of the kitchen addition. And we can’t forget to mention, John and Karan Wedlund who tirelessly devote so much of their time and efforts to the upkeep of our church grounds. And we are blessed with a host of volunteers as well. Our church thanks you all.

What’s Happened – The lead teachers and I attended the Mid-South Lutheran Early Childhood conference. Charity taught 5 classes about infant toddlers and she ran the 1 year old round table. I taught a class on how to deal with difficult parents. We were able to go to the teachers store for supplies. We enjoyed our fellowship with other teachers and Immanuel Lutheran were wonderful hosts. We had a wonderful 3rd of July parade. The children enjoyed parading around the church and ending at the flag pole with parents waiting to see them. They were all dressed in red, white and blue.

What’s Happening – We will be investigating a 4 year old enhancement program for our stu-dents. It could help to better bridge our children for their kindergarten experience. We are excit-ed to be working with a kindergarten teacher who helped write the Cumberland County pre-school program. Due to the construction at the fellowship hall we will be postponing the family fun night this month. We are looking at doing something off site this fall.

The goal of the Board of Christian Education is to allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us to assist people of all ages in our church to grow in their relationship with Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We continue to seek team leaders or co-team leaders for the Confirmation and KICK Time (Sunday School) teams. If you wish to volunteer in either area, please speak with Bill Baessler. That being said, here are updates in each of our areas of responsibility:

Early Childhood Ministry (John Beck): The summer program is concluding as we ready to start a new school year. We learned some lessons in our first attempt at this new form of ministry and plan to benefit from those lessons in our future endeavors.

The After School Care ministry we were planning is being put on hold until we are assured of an en-rollment of 10 students in order to meet our goals. The ECM team is looking to upgrade and enhance the 4-year-old classes to meet Prekindergarten standards. The plan is to implement these upgrades this coming year and work toward a certified Prekindergarten class in the fall of 2019.

K.I.C.K. Time is our new Sunday morning children’s ministry. Children will be dismissed from the second service after the Gospel reading to go to a special class for them. The curriculum is based on “The Thread of Promise” and will feature Bible history lessons as we trace God’s promise to Adam and Eve to send a Savior for all people. The lessons through December are: Creation, Man’s Fall from Grace, Noah, The Call of Abraham, Abraham and Isaac, Joseph and His Brothers, Moses, and Happy Birthday Jesus Party. Presentation of these lessons will vary and be either PowerPoints, video, or storytelling.

Registration began on Sunday, July 22, and we urge parents and grandparents to complete the regis-tration form available in the Gathering Place (and also in this newsletter) and place it in the box for the completed registration forms.

Confirmation will begin on Sunday, October 7, for young people in Grade 6. Classes will be on Sunday mornings during the Bible Study hour. The focus from October through December will be early com-munion instruction, with First Communion Sunday on December 30. Confirmation instruction will continue in January and conclude in the spring of 2019.

The Youth (Michelle Pleinis) continue their fundraising activities, raising funds for their trip to the Synodi-cal Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, MN in July of 2019. Please support their efforts in raising their own funds for this important opportunity. There are 6 youth and 3 adults who are planning to attend. Costs are approximately $2000 per person.

Adult Bible Studies (Pastor Andrew) that recessed for the summer will begin again in September. Watch

the Sunday bulletins for additional information. This team is also seeking additional team members.

If interested, please speak with Pastor Andrew or Bill Baessler, chair of the Board of Christian Educa-

tion.
