Some faith traditions call it Holy Communion, while others call it The Lord’s Supper, in others it’s known as The Great Feast (just to name a few of the ways various traditions refer to this sacrament). Some traditions use wine while others use grape juice. The choice of bread varies virtually from one church to the next, as does the method by which one partakes. Yet for all, it’s filled with sacred meaning. Bread and juice. Ordinary elements that take on extraordinary meaning. Depending on the tradition, the bread and juice literally become the body and blood of Christ, or have a more symbolical meaning. In every case, this central act of faith is one that holds great mystery. We begin the month with World-wide Communion Sunday. It never ceases to amaze me to think that Christians all around the world gather to celebrate Holy Communion. For everyone who has ever come to the table to share in this holy meal it is a time of being blessed. I recently read a blog that raised this question: "Why Do You Take Communion?" The responses were as varied as the ways in which we celebrate this sacrament. One simple answer is because Jesus commanded. Yet, even though we’re commanded to share in Holy Communion, it can mean different things for each of us. Bishop John A.T. Robinson once said: “We come to feast on the Body of Christ, that we may become the Body of Christ.” As we celebrate World-wide Communion Sunday, consider why you come to the communion table. If you’re willing to share, let us know so we can share that with others. Jot it down, send us a note or email – share it with us. PASTOR’S PAGE by Bob Machovec

Holy Communion is one of the most recognized sacraments in Christendom, yet there are few things

that divide the greater church more than this. Some faith traditions call it Holy Communion, while

others call it The Lord’s Supper, in others it’s known as The Great Feast (just to name a few of the

ways various traditions refer to this sacrament). Some traditions use wine while others use grape

juice. The choice of bread varies virtually from one church to the next, as does the method by which

one partakes. Yet for all, it’s filled with sacred meaning.

Bread and juice. Ordinary elements that take on extraordinary meaning. Depending on the tradition,

the bread and juice literally become the body and blood of Christ, or have a more symbolical

meaning. In every case, this central act of faith is one that holds great mystery. We begin the month

with World-wide Communion Sunday. It never ceases to amaze me to think that Christians all around

the world gather to celebrate Holy Communion. For everyone who has ever come to the table to

share in this holy meal it is a time of being blessed.

I recently read a blog that raised this question: "Why Do You Take Communion?" The responses were

as varied as the ways in which we celebrate this sacrament. One simple answer is because Jesus

commanded. Yet, even though we’re commanded to share in Holy Communion, it can mean different

things for each of us. Bishop John A.T. Robinson once said:

“We come to feast on the Body of Christ,

that we may become the Body of Christ.”

As we celebrate World-wide Communion Sunday, consider why you come to

the communion table. If you’re willing to share, let us know so we can share

that with others. Jot it down, send us a note or email – share it with us. Let

us all come to be fed and nourished by the One of is the author of all life.

CHURCH RENOVATION

UPDATE

BREAKING NEWS!! As

we go to press with this

edition of The

Shepherd - workers

have begun the work

on the church with the

tuck pointing and roof

repairs. You will see

equipment around the

church and it may

cause some

inconvenience while

the work is being done.

Your patience and

continuing support of

the renovation project

is greatly appreciated!

ALL SAINTS DAY

We will be celebrating

All Saints Day on

Sunday, November 3.

Each year we honor

and remember those

who have passed

during the year. A

candle is lit during the

service for each person.

If you have a loved one

you would like to be

honored, please

YOUTH NEWS

By: Jennifer Sefl, Youth Director

[email protected]

Youth group is back!

All youth grades 7th

-12th

welcome.

During October the Youth will be going to play Zombie

Paintball at Mapleside Farm and have a Wild Pumpkin Chase.

For more information on these activities visit the Youth

Ministry Page (www.gsumparma.com/youth-ministry) on the

church website or contact Jennifer Sefl.

During Sunday school in September we focused on James

chapters 1-3 sharing and learning about temptation, favoritism

and choosing our words carefully.

We've been challenged with memorizing our verses each

week.

Summer camp fundraisers have started!

Fall just started but we are planning for next summer already.

Camp fundraisers help give full or partial scholarships to our

church campers. Entertainment books are now on sale for $25

each. Books can be purchased through Elizabeth

Whited ([email protected]), Jennifer Sefl, or the church

office.

VOLLEYBALL SIGN UPS

Did you know that Good Shepherd has a volleyball team? Last

year we had two! We play against other church teams on

Thursday evening’s beginning in January and play through

April. Matches start between 6:30 pm and 9:10 pm. You do

not need to have a lot of experience, but you need to be 16

years or older and ready to learn and play by official volleyball

rules. There is a $15 fee per person. So, if you think this

sounds like good way to chase away the winter blues, call

Cathy Neczypor, at 440-884-0222 or email her

at [email protected]. Please sign up before October 15.
