Let’s study!

As children of God, we should avail ourselves of every opportunity to study the Word of God. To practice the spiritual discipline of Bible study is important for our spiritual growth as indi-viduals and as a church family. There will be many such opportunities provided as we journey into our future together at LUMC. By the time you receive this newsletter, we will have started two study groups: one at 10am on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and one at 5:30pm on Sunday, Sept 28. The current tally for the groups is: Tuesday – 22 participants; Sunday – 17 participants. A great response, y’all! The Tuesday group is known as Pathways Bible Study; the Sunday group is at present nameless, but will soon have a name! Note: Both groups will meet in the Yokefellow Classroom for 9 weeks and then go into recess for an all-church Advent study. The groups will reconvene early in the New Year.

As leader of both groups, I will be taking you with me into the Gospels. Mark’s gospel is our initial focus, but this will be followed by Matthew, Luke, and then John. Why choose Mark’s gospel to begin? Well, many scholars think that Mark was the first gospel written. It is also the shortest of the four gospels. It has a special thrust: the Son of God proclaims the Kingdom of God and demands repentance. Mark is the urgent evangelist. His gospel is filled with action. The pace of Jesus is rapid as he teaches, preaches, works miracles, and heals people. The power of Jesus Christ is emphasized by Mark: power over unclean spirits; power over disease and physical problems; power over sin; power over Sabbath; power over nature; and power over death.

While it is ideal to have people participate weekly without too many absences, I do recognize that things come up and we are diverted into other important concerns in life. So please come as regularly as you can. My thought is this: some Bible study together is better than none! I look forward to being in God’s word with you as your pastor.

Ivan

We Announce Two WNCC Laity Service Awards! Two of our members have been nominated and will be recognized as recipients of the 2014 Laity Service Awards. They are Jackie Harrell and Harriet Binkley. They received their pins at the 11am service on Sunday, Sept 14, and will be recognized and receive their certificates at a District Laity Service Awards service at Mount Tabor UMC (Robinhood Road) on Sunday, September

28, at 3:00pm. We hope that many of our church members will attend the service as we celebrate their unstinting devotion to the Lord and to LUMC. Their service in the name of Jesus Christ has cov-ered the following areas: º Jackie Harrell: Long-time member of Missions Team; active in Sunday School; directs LUMC’s Transportation Ministry; instrumental in establishing and leading Lewisville Community Churches’ Blood Drives; and organized a Health Fair. Jackie has always been a supporter of and leader in health care-related ministries in Lewisville. Her transportation ministry insures that those who are in need of help in making doctor appointments can have needed transportation. º Harriet Binkley: Long-time Chair of Missions Team; Past President of United Methodist Women; District Officer, United Methodist Women; Teacher for UMW School of Missions; Leader of team that visits Vienna Village weekly; and Sunday School teacher. She also volunteers to deliver meals in the community with Meals on Wheels. Harriet has been and continues to be a strong pres-ence and leader at LUMC. She has been an inspiration and role model for many in our church family.
