The Christian FuneralBy Laren Shiley

Daniel G. Reunig, Editor

Purpose of a Christian Funeral

1 – to hear the comfort of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a time of grief and trouble;

2 – to proclaim the power of God and grace which redeems and saves His children;

3 – to remember Jesus Christ is the First fruits of those who have fallen asleep and thus is our continuing hope;

4 – to witness publicly to the joy of our faith in God and to the victory we have through our loving Savior;

5 – to receive comfort in the knowledge of a joyful reunion with our loved ones in the resurrection;

6 – to face death knowing Jesus Christ has delivered us from sin, from the power of death and the devil, giving eternal salvation to all who believe in Him.

7 – to praise God from whom all blessings flow as He our Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter has shown us in His eternal Word.

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

InvocationP In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit.C Amen.

The casket may be covered with a funeral pall.

Remembrance of BaptismP In Holy Baptism Craig was clothed with the robe of Christ’s

righteousness that covered all his sin. St. Paul says: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?”

C We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like

His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.

Old Testament Isaiah 61:1–3, 10

1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,because the LORD has anointed me

to bring good news to the poor;he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives,and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,and the day of vengeance of our God;to comfort all who mourn;

3to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,

the oil of gladness instead of mourning,the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;

that they may be called oaks of righteousness,the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD;my soul shall exult in my God,

for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,

as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,

and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Epistle 2 Timothy 4:6–8

6For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Holy Gospel Matthew 25:13–21

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

13Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.14“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his

servants and entrusted to them his property. 15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ 21His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed

P God has made us His people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the

dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

1 I know that my Redeemer lives;What comfort this sweet sentence gives!He lives, He lives, who once was dead;He lives, my ever-living head.

2 He lives triumphant from the grave;He lives eternally to save;He lives all-glorious in the sky;He lives exalted there on high.

4 He lives to grant me rich supply;He lives to guide me with His eye;He lives to comfort me when faint;He lives to hear my soul’s complaint.

5 He lives to silence all my fears;He lives to wipe away my tears;He lives to calm my troubled heart;He lives all blessings to impart.

7 He lives and grants me daily breath;He lives, and I shall conquer death;He lives my mansion to prepare;He lives to bring me safely there.

8 He lives, all glory to His name!He lives, my Jesus, still the same;Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives:I know that my Redeemer lives!

Sermon

748 I’m But a Stranger Here1 I’m but a stranger here,

Heav’n is my home;Earth is a desert drear, Heav’n is my home.Danger and sorrow standRound me on ev’ry hand;Heav’n is my fatherland, Heav’n is my home.

2 What though the tempest rage, Heav’n is my home;Short is my pilgrimage, Heav’n is my home;And time’s wild wintry blastSoon shall be overpast;I shall reach home at last, Heav’n is my home.

3 Therefore I murmur not, Heav’n is my home;Whate’er my earthly lot, Heav’n is my home;

878 Abide with Me Verse 2 sung by the soloist only

1 Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.When other helpers fail and comforts flee,Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Soloist2 I need Thy presence ev’ry passing hour;

What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

3 Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;Tears for all woes, a heart for ev’ry plea.Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

4 Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;Change and decay in all around I see;O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
