Mater Dei Catholic Pilgrimage to

DAY 1) SATURDAY, 22 SEP: DEPART CHICAGO (M) Board your flight to Budapest! Group’s departure is from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Other cities may be available at an add-on cost. Relax and enjoy your overnight intercontinental flight.

DAY 2) SUNDAY, 23 SEP: BUDAPEST (M, D)Arrival in Budapest in the morning. After immigration and customs formalities, meet our local manager and board our coach that will transfer us to the legendary Hungarian capital, Budapest, with its 2 districts, Buda and Pest, divided by the River Danube. Our first stop will be (Hősök tere) Heroes' Square, noted for its iconic statue complex featuring the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and other important Hungarian national leaders, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The top of the column depicts Archangel Gabriel, who holds the Hungarian Holy Crown and the apostolic double cross in his hands. Our next visit will be St. Stephen's Basilica where Mass* is celebrated in a spirit of thanksgiving for a safe voyage across the Atlantic. This Basilica houses the relic of St. Stephen’s hand. This afternoon we visit the Jesuit Chruch of the Sacred Heart. The church was built in the 1890's by the Count and Countess Zichy who owned all the surrounding properties. Countess Zichy particularly favored the Jesuits as teachers. When the communists took over, they suppressed the Jesuits, and closed all their schools, arrested the Zichy’s and stripped them of their properties. In honor of the Sacred Heart, we will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in this church. Time to check-in at our six-night hotel stay. Relax, freshen up as you get acclimated to Hungarian Time Zone. Tonight, join your group for a welcome to Hungary dinner.

DAY 3) MONDAY, 24 SEP: BUDAPEST (B, D)This morning we visit the Hungarian State Opera, a richly decorated building and is considered an architectural masterpiece. Although in size and capacity it is not among the greatest, in beauty and the quality of acoustics the Budapest Opera House is

considered to be amongst the finest opera houses in the world (3rd best after La Scala di Milano and the Palace Garner in Paris). Afterwards, travel to the northwestern area of Budapest to visit the Marian Shrine of Máriaremete. It houses an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary a woman had placed on a tree that was a replica of the picture of Our Lady of Einsieden (Switzerland). The woman would stop during her daily duties and pray before the image, and soon others began to join her. After the woman died people continued to stop by and pray. Around

1800, a woman who was bl ind stopped by to pray and was  miraculously healed. From that time on, thousands have continued to visit including Pope Saint John Paul II who prayed before the image. Thousands of ex-votos line the outside of the church giving thanks for prayers answered. Mass * to be celebrated here. Visit historic Margaret Island, named after Saint Margaret (1242–1270), the daughter of King Béla IV, who lived in the Dominican convent on the island. King Béla IV vowed to raise his daughter as a nun if Hungary survived the Mongol invasion. Ruins of this 13th century Dominican church and convent can still be seen. The Island is now a major park area in the city. Return to the hotel for dinner and our second night in Budapest.

DAY 4) TUESDAY, 25 SEP: BUDAPEST (B, D) Travel today to the Castle District of Budapest to admire its magnificent views of the city. The area features the Fisherman’s Bastion and Mátyás Templon (St. Matthias Church), otherwise known as the Church of Our Lady. The first church on this site was founded by Saint Stephen, King of Hungary in 1015, was later destroyed by the Mongols in 1241. The current building was constructed in the latter half of the 13th century. Originally named after the Virgin Mary, the church was renamed after King Matthias in the 19th Century, who ordered the transformation of its original southern tower. Mass* to be celebrated here today. We continue our excursion by visiting Gellért Hill, named after Saint Gerard, first Bishop of the Kingdom of Hungary, who was thrown to death from the hill. With more spectacular views of Budapest, the hill is also famous for being the spot where Cardinal József Mindszenty addressed the Hungarian Nation in front of half a million people, before he was arrested by the communists. This afternoon, enjoy a cruise of the celebrated Danube River. Return to the hotel for dinner. Third night in Budapest.
