Milk Is their principal source of Income and (hey have a herd of 100 Ayrshlres, 40 of which are.In milk. In addition, there Is a flock of 200 sheep and at times as many as 100 head of hogs. As the temperature here seldom I'oes below freezing, the cows are ver housed. They have a paved lot about 126 ft. square which has a roof over one fourth the area to protect them from the winter rains. This lot is kept well bed- ded. About 40 acres of wheat, which often makes 60 bu. per acre. Is grown for a cash crop and to fur- nish straw for bedding. About the same acreage Is planted to a mix- ture of vetch and oats, which Is put up for hay. When the season and weather permit, winter varie- ties of their grains arc planted, otherwise spring varieties are used. As wet weather often prevails at haying time, a considerable por- tion of (he hay goes Into the trench sllo. About 20 acres of kale Is planted each year which goes luxuriantly and Is pastured off piece-meal. A portion of the field Is fenced off. (he kale pastured to the ground and then the fence Is moved. Grain and concentrates are pur- chased. A considerable amount of commercial fertilizer Is used. The milk Is sold to a retailer In a nearby place and brings 43c per gallon at the farm. The farm has a very complete line of farm Implements and the power requirements are taken care of by a Ford tractor, a Fordson and some other make that has a V4 motor, all delsels.
