Like most committed Christians (and all seriousJews), going to the Holy Land was on my bucketlist until last November when I fnally went.

Among the hundred or so olks on the trip was a young guywhod become a Senior Pastor just a ew months back. Westarted talking as we traveled around. Hed heard about thementoring I was doing and started asking me questionsgood questions. I shared as much as he would listen toand he said hed like to have me come tell his church stawhat I had told him. People say things like that all thetime. Yeah, lets get together sometime and Id love tohear more about that. Nice ways to exit a conversationon a positive note without hurting someones eelings.

But he ollowed up a ter the trip andinvited me to actually come do it.

A ter being introduced and makinga ew introductory comments,I asked them to take out pen &paper and write down the nameo a person they were personallyinvesting in or spiritual purposes.

Not a single person couldwrite down a name.

I thought Maybe they didntunderstand the question. So I repeated mysel .

Im going out on a limb to o er youa perspectivea new perspective. Imnot in your circumstances. Never havebeen. But through my riendshipswith Andy Stanley, Bryant Wright, JoeWittwer, Paul Jiminez and other Senior

Pastors, Ive learned a ew things.

Zone without man to man comesapart. The hearts o ministers becomecalloused. The spiritual work theyrecalled to starts to eel secular. Theman-to-man eels like spiritualambulance work, taking it out o youwithout reflling. You need to see ruitrom your labors.we all do. You needto see li e changeto see the powero God released in a trans ormationalway in A life. In A family! Seeing thehand o God reach into an individualsli e through you is uel. Fuel that willpropel you to lead others in His work.Fuel that will propel you to handle your

    zones or yearsand with excellence.

    inTroDuCing.man To man!

There IS another way to play. Man toman. When you get your assignment, that man is your responsibility. Youtrack him. Sometimes youre right upon himtouching him. eeling his everymovement, anticipating his next move.

Sometimes you lay back a little andgive him room. You never take your eyeo him. Hes your man until the play isover or theres a change o possession.

You get a good bit o man to manwork. But its crisis based. The sickand dying, the marrying, the fghting(which is the marrying.just a littlelater on), and the angry. When itsbroke, they call you. You go man-to-man and do what you can. Butrarely are these the people whocan lead and grow your church.

the outsourcingof disciple-mAkingIm a student o Jesus, not o church history.

But what Ive concluded is we lay people outsourceddisciple-making to you church guys a long, long time ago.

In Jesus day and in the frst century church, everyone wasin the game. The line between clergy and laypeople wasblurry i there at all. The Apostles? Yeah, they were di erent.

They had been with Jesus. They were there at Pentecost. They had a special job.to tell the world what they sawwith their own eyes. And they were killed or doing it.

James was executed by King Herod in A.D. 44Philip was crucifed in A.D. 54Matthew was executed in A.D. 60James (Jesus brother) was stoned to death in A.D. 66

Andrew was crucifed onan X shaped crossPeter was crucifed upsidedown on a crossPaul was beheaded in A.D. 66

These guys werent done away with

or teaching what Jesus taught. Theywere killed or testi ying or tellingpeople that Jesus, a human being.came back rom the dead. Thathappening set Jesus apart rom anyand all religious fgures past, presentand uture. Jesus divinity was essentiali Jesus teachings are going to matterto the world or the rest o time.

Early on, we see the church as a atorganization with little hierarchy,ew people who werent everydaydoers o the Word. That was thepower o the early churchso manypeople were committed, involved, evangelists, servants.disciplemakers.

CHAPTER 1 The ouTSourCing oF DiSCiPle-making

Years go by. Church leaders take on moreand more, letting lay people o the hookor anything other than volunteer service, mostly on Sunday morning. Lay peoplecompartmentalize their aith, thinkingSunday is the only day being a Christ-ollower matters. Church leaders strive.giving it all theyve got. But participation

without involvement breeds cynicism. And little by little lay people think Well, let them do it. I give money to the church. They get paid and a ter all, what else dothey have to do between Sundays?

    And thus the disconnect.

    PreSSing The reSeT BuTTon.

Pastors have to reboot. Press thereset button. Re rame disciple-makingand get lay people involved again.

The why is clear. Thehow is a challenge.

But youre up to it. Keep reading.

    BuT Somewhere along The line..

    Things changed.

I dont know whose ault it was.

Because certain people where chosen, most o the people who were called(which is all o us) laid down andwent to sleep. Let the pastor do it.Let the church do it. They havespecial gi ts. Theyve been trained.Theyve been to seminary.

Im a plumber, or school teacher, orbusiness guy. What do I know?

The other sidethe clergywelcomed it. It made their callingthat much more important. A ter allthey WERE chosen. They were setapart or vocational ministry. So they jumped in with both eetto do the work o the Gospel.

Be ore Martin Luther and since Martin Luther, pastors havepreached and taught Gods Word with the goal o makingdisciples. That preaching, along with millions o lay peopleliving and sharing their aith created something like 2 billionpro essing Christians. O course God through His HolySpirit really did it, just so you know Im not con used.

Anyhow, weve landed here in 2012 with a huge problem.

We have a nation (maybe a world) where pastors areless and less impact ul in their sermons and weremaking ewer disciple-makers. Some people come tochurch regularly, some sporadically. Li e change seemsto come very slowly i at all. Radical trans ormationsare rare. And the urther you get rom the sta , the lessenthusiastic people seem about the work o the Gospel.

I think part o it, and I mean abig part o it stems rom the waypastors have approached preaching

    AND disciple-making. Here I go.

    whiCh ComeS FirST?

The starting point is always GodsWord, as well it must be. But the when and how Gods Word is explained andapplied to peoples lives has gottenswitched around and is alling allow.

Sermons start with a Scripture andthe pastor spends the next minutesexplaining what that Scripture means, the principals God intends to reveal, and fnally, how those principles canbe applied to peoples everyday li esituations. It might ow like this..

    NOTES

CHAPTER 2 iTS TurneD arounD BaCkwarDS

Traditionally, weve taken theScriptures, developed curriculum, created classes, sat people in rowsand taught them how to be discipleso Jesus. Ive been through a buncho those classes and Im sure I learnedsomething. But the lack in ormationisnt our problem. Weve got millions

o learn-ed Christians who live likeeveryone else in our culture, divorce atthe same rate as our culture, and never

share their aith or make more disciples.

    JeSuS DiD The oPPoSiTe.

He walked through li e with his

disciples.not preaching at them.He used the things o everyday li eto teach them about the Father andabout the Faith. Food, owers, taxes, houses, riches, o erings, sickness, death, government authorityHe usedreal li e things and situations to unpackthe Scriptures and work the Truth oGod into His disciples. He started with

The communicators (e.g. preachers)in the ast-growing churchesdo it backward. But the lack oin ormation isnt our problem.

They start with the li e situationspeople ace. They sur ace issues andthe eelings we experience in li e.

Then, and only then do they bringtruth rom Gods Word to the specifcsituation, explaining the answer andhow to live it. People dont buysolutions to problems they dont have. When you start with the problemthe elt need and help peopleconnect the answer in a personalway, theyre more open to a solution.Theres more openness to the GoodNews when people see the specifcrelevance to their lives and situations.

Same thing applies to howdisciple-makers get made.

CHAPTER 1 The ouTsouRCing of disCiple-making

    whAt Jesus did

When Jesus started His public ministry, the church wasnt

peripheral to Jewish cultureit was central. Religious schoolsWERE the public schools. Their commandments were thelaws people were governed by, sans those imposed by theRomans. The roles and responsibilities were set by Leviticallaw. A Senior Pastor would have known exactly what to do.

But Jesus saw that years and years o religious practicehad led to playing zone. To rote repetition o themost sacred worship. And to a lot o hard hearts.

With His insight and power, Jesus could have ocused onre orming the church. He could have staged a revival. (andyou could argue He did a little o that with His teachings inthe Temple.) He could have launched a re-education programor the Pharisees and Sadducees. He could have even createdHis own competing Temple down the road, taking some o

the best and brightest Jews with Himto go do it right or the glory o God.

But instead o creating all that con ict, instead o trying to change all thoseminds, instead o orcing closed-minded people out o their zones, Hechose a di erent strategy. A unique

strategy. And it worked big time.

Jesus just went out and quietlyselected a small number o menand invested in them as a group. He cast a big vision and requiredtotal commitment. He created acommunity o which He was apart. He took them deep into theScriptures AND to the issues o li eas they experienced them together.

    1. Jesus was on purpose. He said I

    2. He didnt change anything at church. Not directly orimmediately. But over time, whatHe did changed everything.

    3. He didnt ask anything o anyone.Didnt add to anyones workload inthe Temple. He just did His thingwith these guys and the Kingdom oGod burst onto the scene as a result.

Rabbis in Jesus day selected theirdisciples and taught them intenselyevery day. They were Temple-centric and ocused on the Torah.More and more Torah. Less andless people and li e. Dos anddonts. Ceremony and sacrifce.

Rabbi Jesus wasnt a revolutionary. Heselected His disciples and taught themintensely too. But He brought the truth

Same is true in church world.

Should a Senior Pastor start raising his hands high over hishead during worship, others will start raising their hands. When a Senior Pastor goes on a mission trip, the number opeople who sign up or mission trips goes up. When a Senior

Pastor comes to the Monday morningprayer group, more people come.

    They do what you do.

So when a Senior Pastor startsmentoring a group o men, he doestwo things at the same time.

    1. He personally equips a small groupo men to go and do the samehe makes more disciple-makers.Over time, his group becomes thenucleus o a tribe o men who areall in or Christ and or His church.

But I want you to do it. One time. One group. One season. Thats it.
