Chapter member Harold J. Murphy named 2011 Joseph E. Ewers Award winner The ASIS Boston Chapter was pleased to present Harold J. Murphy with the 2011 Joseph E. Ewers Distinguished Service Award in June. Established in 1985, this award recognizes exceptionally dedicated and distinguished service to the Chapter, the Soci- ety, and the security profession over a long period of time. It is a tribute to the memory of Joseph Ewers, a longtime member of the Society and a founding member of the Boston Chapter in 1958. Service to the Boston Chapter is a fundamental criterion and the cornerstone on which the candidate is judged. Since his start in public service, Harold has been instrumental in helping others. As a Marine, his training taught him about assisting those in need, and as a result, he dedicated himself to the service of his country. After his active military duty ended, Harold continued his public service by joining the Cambridge Police Department in 1964. He rose through the ranks, and in 1993 became the Department Superintendant. read more on page 9 Chairperson’s Message I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer, although, as it does every year, it has gone by too fast. Legislative Update

Massachusetts legislators hear pitch for

law targeting workplace bullying

With information by Colleen Quinn on www.MassLive.com, 7/15/11

While laws have been passed in Massachusetts to target bullying in schools, now a new bill will focus on workplace bullying.

The Healthy Workplace Bill would clearly define bullying and make it illegalfor employees or colleagues to bully one another. "We neglected to acknowl-edge that bullying is not restricted to our children," said State Rep. FrankSmizik (D-Brookline), the bill's sponsor. Several victims of workplace bully-ing spoke to members of the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development recently. Employees told lawmakers that the emotional andphysical stress from bullying has led them to suffer a great deal. Those thatspoke had previously experienced bullying in regards to race, medical conditions and more.

Several lawmakers also testified in support of House Bill 2310 and SenateBill 916. State Sen. Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) said that close to one-thirdof all workers have suffered from some type of workplace bullying. Addition-ally, workplace bullying is four times more likely to happen than sexual harassment.

"High unemployment rates only make this situation worse," Clark said, not-ing that many employees will stay in a bad situation as opposed to being outof work.

Currently, 19 other states are considering similar proposals.Attendees at the Annual Public SafetyLuncheon in June were treated to a per-formance by Retired Massachusetts PoliceSergeant Daniel M. Clark, aka “The SingingTrooper,” who opened the event.

Congratulations to Mario Colangelo!

Mario was the high bidder for the Chapter's full seminar admittance to the annual ASIS convention in Orlando next month. This ticket was auctioned to benefit our Manning Scholarship Fund.

He ensures new members are warmly welcomedand is always available to provide a resource for a meeting or training session. Harold never says “no,” but rather presents us with exceptionalspeakers we would not normally have access to. He continually goes aboveand beyond to assist anyone in need, and actively supports the mission ofASIS International.
