January - Circle 5 & 6 Funeral Dinner s January 16 - Large meeting in the Parish Center

From our Seminarian…

Hi, my name is Daniel Strecker. I’m the seminarian from St. Bonaventure’s Parish. I graduated from Scotus Central Catholic in 2014 and I’m also a graduate of St. Bon’s Elementary School. I’m grateful to be from Columbus because Columbus has been blessed with a strong Catholic community whose blessings continue to grow. I’d like to share with you a few things about myself. I’ve always had a fascination of the priesthood. When I was in elementary school, before I even received my First Communion, I enjoyed “playing church”. I would use Tostitos chips and grape juice as the “Eucharist”. I have one younger sister named Emma who would be my “altar server” and my parents Bret and Linda would be the only members of my “congregation”. Even though I never truly felt called to seminary until high school, the vocation of the priesthood has always had my interest. Junior year of high school I took my only college visit which was to Saint John Vianney Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I was so sure that SJV was the place God called me to be. Shortly after my return, I realized it was the only college visit and maybe it was just the idea of college that I fell in love with. After high school, I decided to attend Central Community College in Columbus so that I could continue singing and acting and study to be an English teacher. I loved English but I wasn’t at peace with a career in teaching it. So with the help from many people close to my heart, I came to the realization: it was when I felt called to Seminary that I felt the most peace. Peace is how I knew God was calling me to Seminary. I am now in the middle of my second year of seminary and I have loved every second of it. I’ve learned a lot about myself and Christ’s Church and the man God is calling me to be. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me at any point in my life: my parents, teachers, coaches, directors and even fellow parishioners. St. Bon’s parish has provided many opportunities for my faith to grow. I’m proud to call St. Bon’s my home parish.

Can you imagine what kind of response I would get if I asked my three children, "Who would like to volunteer to clean up the kitchen after dinner today?" Six eyeballs staring at me like I had two heads! If I couch my request in terms of volunteerism, I have suggested that they don't have any real ownership in this matter. Perhaps they do sometimes think that their mother and I are simp-ly hired hands to take care of them, but rest assured, I have not received a paycheck for services rendered lately. When you and I give a donation of blood, we volunteer our time and blood to the Red Cross. The Red Cross does not employ most of us, nor do we own a part of the Red Cross. We can only volun-teer ourselves for the cause. As parishioners we are part of a parish family. We belong to our parish community. We do not visit on a Sunday morning, since we cannot visit a place that is home. The call of the body of Christ occurs in every parish and our response should be that of the psalmist, "Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will." Real steward-ship never counts the cost and never asks for volunteers. We step forward because we belong to something greater than ourselves and the head of that community is Jesus. After dinner at my house, someone needs to clean up the kitchen. In your parish community, someone needs to respond to the call of Jesus. In both cases, no volunteers are needed. We will rely on family instead. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

Our Father, we seek you in so many ways and places in our life. We seek you for guidance and for comfort.

But you have told us that when there is hunger, it is up to us to feed the hungry.

We ask you to help us see you in other Christians and humbly ask you for strength in the search

for what we have in common. Bless our efforts to look at all the ways we are united in faith,

and grant us courage to change our hearts and minds to realize your will.

We ask all this through Christ our Lord and brother, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
