January 14, 2018 THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 14, 2018 A good serv- ant surrenders his own wants and needs so that he can do the work of the one he serves. True service focuses on the one served. To truly be at someone’s service means that your life is given over for the sake of another. There is no thought of self, only a desire to please the other. When we are in the service of the Lord, we quickly discover that more is gained than is lost. God is never outdone in generosity and he turns our efforts into a grace that feeds and sustains us. When we serve the Lord in each other, God fills us with all that is good and holy. Our weakness becomes our strength, our fears become our battle cry, and our humility becomes the crown of glory. Baptism unites us to the service of Je- sus, who serves the Church with His life as well as His love. Joined to Him, and with each other, we receive the power of the Holy Spirit and are called to carry on the service of Jesus each day, wher- ever we may be. The opportunities to carry God’s love to those most in need present themselves every day. We just need to look and recognize the Lamb of God and follow Him to those He loves and serves. ADULT CONFIRMATION

Are you a baptized, catechized Roman Catholic adult (18 or older) who has never been confirmed? The Diocese of Worcester will celebrate a diocesan-wide adult Confirmation on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at the Cathedral of St. Paul. A retreat to prepare for Confirmation will be offered on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Spiritual Renewal Center in Putnam, CT. If interested, please contact the pastor for more information.

Looking for a St. Luke’s Liaison to the 2018 Diocesan Women’s Conference Would you like to serve as our parish liaison for the 2018 Women’s Conference? You would help pro-mote the conference as the time gets closer, make sure the bulletin announcements get placed in their bulletins, maybe make a pulpit plea/announcement, and generally help promote the conference and help direct women to purchase tickets. If you would like to serve as the liaison for our parish or have further questions, please contact Julie Basque at 508-366-8509, ext 4. All the material, instructions, bulletin announcements, posters, brochures you will need to promote the conference will be sent to you once those materials are available and we get closer to the conference. Remember the conference will be held at beautiful Assumption College in Worcester, Saturday, No-vember 10, 2018 (yes, next year) and we have 4 of our 5 speakers committed, Helen Alvare, Susan Conroy, Susie Lloyd and Dr. Janet Smith. We are working on getting a dynamic religious woman, so stay tuned.

HOW ABOUT MAKING A CURSILLO WEEKEND? Cursillo or "short course in Christianity" is an uplifting and educational experience. Cursillo was brought from Spain to the United States in 1962. The weekend is facili-tated by a team of laypeople and clergy who deliver orga-nized talks and discussions. What the presenters add to the talks is the witness of their own lives, their struggles and triumphs in Christ. The weekend is full of laughter, prayer, great music, wonderful meals and so much more. Our 2018 dates are: Men’s - February 22-25 & June 14-17; Women’s - May 3-6 & October 25-28. All weekends will be held at the Immaculate Conception Spiritual Re-newal Center in Putnam, CT. For additional information, please contact Sue Leighton at 508-278-3155 or [email protected] OR Joan Laracy at 774-239-2474 or [email protected].

PRO-LIFE MASS All are invited to attend the Pro-Life Mass with Bishop McManus on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Cathedral of St. Paul, 19 Chatham St., Worcester. We will also pray in a special way for all those who will be trav-elling to Washington, DC for the March for Life. All are welcome!

“St. Luke’s donates 10% of its weekly collection through Sharing First . We donate to others be-fore attending to our own wants. Sharing First is unique not only because there is one

collection each week, but that we help the needy first. Please adjust your donation to include both Sharing First and St. Luke’s. Thank you for your generous support.

JANUARY 7 supports VISITATION HOUSE in the amount of $913 JANUARY 14 supports PARISH OUTREACH (TODAY) JANUARY 21 supports URBAN MISSIONARIES Deacon Walter Doyle and his wife Kathleen, serve the Worcester community through Urban Missionaries of Our Lady of Hope. This faith-filled couple offers an ever-growing collection of services, including their Christmas gift-giving program, "The Little Store" thrift shop and food pantry. "The Lord keeps blessing good works...as long as we do good, we will be blessed", says Walter. "This is a faith ministry...we open our doors at 9:00 a.m. and have no idea what will happen that day." The Doyle's have thus far found creative ways to find beds, meals and clothes for those they serve. With God's help, their ministry is ever evolving.

2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” - John 1:38

What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is your heart longing for something deeper that can only be found by spending time with God? Take time,

each day, in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He wants you to do.

PERNAT FAMILY HEALTH SERVICE Worcester, MA

Dear St. Luke’s Parish: We want to thank you for the $1576 do-

nation given to Pernet Family Health Service. This gracious contribution is much appreciated.

The donation is real support to our mission at Pernet Family Health, which is “...to provide home based-based health and social services that lead to long-term strengthening and enhancement of family and community life.”

Pernet, as you know, has been instrumental in help-ing to provide low income Worcester-area families with home health and social services for more than 60 years. Pernet’s highly qualified nurses, early childhood educators, and social workers still visit and care for families who may be isolated and with-out adequate resources, right in their homes.

Many children and families continue to have tough times, and difficulty finding all the goods and ser-vices they need. The contributions of community –minded institutions such as Saint Luke the Evangelist brings much needed support to the people we serve.

Sincerely, Sheilah Dooley, Executive Director
