Help EDPAC Help YouLast year, the New York State Dental Asso-ciation (NYSDA) and its political lobbying group, the Empire Dental Political Action Committee (EDPAC), were instrumental in passing legislation that protected dentists from the intrusion of commercial entities into their practice. The legislation prohibits manufacturers from imposing quotas for dentists in order to provide their product or service. New York was the fi rst state in the country to pass such legislation. One of the most important member benefi ts NYSDA and EDPAC provide is legislative and regulatory advocacy. In the past several years, NYSDA and EDPAC have fought continuously for many important issues. New York is one of only a few states that still provide Medicaid benefi ts for adults due to our strong advocacy program. De-spite continuous attempts by the New York Trial Lawyers Association to change them for their benefi t, we have kept the statute of limitations and contingency fees for at-torneys at the same level. We have beaten them at every effort.

NYSDA and EDPAC have been successful in every piece of legislation they have had introduced. That is an incredible record. This advocacy must come at a price how-ever. Fighting for the rights of dentists and their patients is a complex and unceasing crusade. It requires fi nancial and grass roots

support. Right now, EDPAC is soliciting for that fi nancial support. Help them help you by contributing something more to the effort. Become a member of the EDPAC Capitol Club with a $100 contribution or join the EDPAC Honor Roll with a contribu-tion of $200 or more.Donations may be made by check or credit card and sent to EDPAC, 20 Corporate Woods, Suite 692, Albany, N.Y., 12211. You will be helping your profession, your patients, and yourself.

Today is another day of suffering for thousands of people who are disabled, elderly or medically at-risk with seriously neglected dental disease.

You Can Make the Difference.Harry had a heart attack, lost his job and exhausted his unemployment benefits. His family is trying to help cover his living expenses, but no money is available for dental care. Today, Harry has a healthy smile thanks to New York dentists, Dr. Steve Kalt, of Hicksville, and Dr. James Dolin, a Massapequa Park oral surgeon, both volunteers for Donated Dental Services (DDS).

Volunteering is easy. You review patient profiles in advance, choose to see or decline any patient and determine your own treatment plan. You see patients in your own office, never pay lab costs and the program requires no extra paperwork from your staff.

Title: “A New Paradigm Shift in Esthetic Treatment Planning”

Clinician: Leonid Rubinov, D.D.S., Ph.D. Clinical Assistant Professor, Advanced Programs for International Den-tists, New York University College of Dentistry

Synopsis:This course will provide a whole new outlook on dentistry and will describe a new interdis-ciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment planning of full mouth rehabilitation cases with pre-existing malocclusions and TMJ disorders. It will also illustrate the need for inter-disciplinary diagnosis, which leads to proper sequencing of future treatment to solve several of the esthetic and functional dilemmas dentists often face. Participants will learn the logical thought process used for treatment planning and the clinical decision-making process that will assist in determining when treatment goals have been met. A new set of priorities in the diagnosis of full mouth rehabilitation cases will be determined. This will demonstrate why evaluation of a patient’s facial beauty, proper facial balance and proportions are paramount for esthetic treatment planning.

Upon successful completion of this course attendees will learn a new interdisciplinary ap-proach to treatment planning of esthetic rehabilitation cases. Participants will learn why it is so important to evaluate a patient’s facial appearance, along with proper skeletal and dental orthopedic relationship between their jaws and teeth. Title: “Stem Cells: Sources, Therapies and the Dental Professional”

Clinician: Gregory C. Chotkowski, D.M.D. President, StemSave Inc.Synopsis:The emerging field of “personalized medicine” is a popular topic in the media and gener-ally refers to new medical technologies derived from a patient’s own stem cells. Within the context of adult dental stem cells, recent findings and scientific research support the thera-peutic use of the extremely potent mesenchymal stem cells found within the healthy pulp of deciduous and permanent teeth, as well as other accessible tissues harvested from within the oral cavity. Their use can be applied to a multitude of regenerative and personalized medical therapies. As clinical studies continue to advance in the coming years, it is widely accepted that in order to avoid autoimmune rejection from donor tissues -- while simultaneously maximizing on therapeutic efficacy -- stem cells will be used to generate individualized “patient specific” treatments. Within the field of dentistry, stem cells will be used for the regeneration of dentin and/or dental pulp, the creation of biologically viable scaffolds for the replacement of orofacial bone and cartilage and the partial or complete regeneration of defective salivary glands.Upon successful completion of this course participants will learn the basic science of the different types of stem cells, the various available sources for recovery of adult stem cells from within and outside the oral cavity, the advantages and disadvantages of each source and the benefits of recovering and cryopreserving dental stem cells. Attendees will also learn the clinical relevance of recovering dental stem cells and the potential uses of dental stem cells and their role in regenerative therapies.
