The Second Annual Child and Youth Finance International

Summit & Awards Ceremony

Mary from Uganda makes and sells slippers. She got this idea after attending the First Annual Child

and Youth Finance Summit & Awards Ceremony in 2012, where she took part in the Youth Meeting.

She uses the money to buy school supplies. John and his friends, who were with Mary at the

Summit, have opened a little canteen in their school in the UK. They plan to give a percentage of

their profits to charity. Two continents away, Nevina returned home to the slum in Bangladesh from

the Summit and started a savings group with hundreds of other children. Meanwhile, her four

friends from the Summit returned home to South Africa and spoke to their Minister of Finance to

convince him to make financial education and inclusion for youngsters a priority in the country.*

Such was the power of the First Annual Child and Youth Finance International Summit & Awards

Ceremony. This milestone Summit was a dialogue between 70 youth from 40 countries and 346

senior-level participants from 83 countries representing governments, financial institutions, NGOs

and children’s rights advocates, academics and many more. It was a time to share innovations, ideas

and commitments for expanding the global Child and Youth Finance Movement. This year’s Summit

will once again bring together a similar number of senior level representatives and youngsters to

keep this dialogue open.

At the request of last year’s Summit participants, five regional meetings were held in the second half

of 2012 for each of the five regions in which CYFI works. In total, these regional meetings brought

together over 800 participants from 105 countries in the different areas of the world. The regional

meetings took place in Mexico, Belgium, Nigeria, Lebanon and the Philippines. Youth

representatives were present at all the meetings and shared their feedback directly with the

policymakers.

This year’s Annual Child and Youth Finance International Summit & Awards Ceremony will be

hosted under the patronage of the Capital Markets Board of Turkey, in collaboration with the

Central Bank of Turkey and the Istanbul Stock Exchange.

In this booklet, you will find an introduction to the Child and Youth Finance Movement, details of

this year’s Summit, an exploration of the Summit’s themes and structures, and the program

schedule.
