Where did it come from, and how did it get here?

The sea lamprey originated in the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is older than the dinosaurs, and is one of the last water animals to have no jaws. It got to Lake Ontario through the St. Lawrence Seaway. It later escaped into the other Great Lakes through the Welland Canal.

How is this organism harmful, and what is its economic impact?

The sea lamprey uses its teeth to eat away at native fish in the Great Lakes, usually tunneling through the fish.

The sea lamprey affects the economy by bringing down the population of native fish, such as lake trout, bourbon, and whitefish. Doing so affects the commercial fishing in the area.

How to manage them

One way to control the sea lamprey is to sterilize the males, then release them so that they can’t reproduce.

People also use chemicals called lampricides which kill the lampreys while they are still young.
