Clarification of Terms:

At Indiana Campus Compact, we function

under the two following terms –

Service Engagement

&

Service-Learning

Page 8: The Scholarship of Engagement: Faculty Grant Dollars to Support Your Engaged Teaching, Research, and Service J.R Jamison, M.A. Associate Director Indiana.

Service Engagement

Service Engagement is any endeavor that brings the

community into the campus and the campus into the

Community, reciprocally, often addressing a

social concern. –It could include service-learning, co-curricular community

service, and volunteerism. –It could also include some internships and field experiences. –Ultimately, the sum of these activities leads to a campus that is

fully engaged with the community. –Service engagement is also referred to as “civic engagement”

by many national organizations. (Adapted from the definition of “Civic Engagement” provided by National Service-Learning Clearinghouse

by Indiana Campus Compact)

Service-Learning

Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
