CoversMinor nicks, short edge tears, flap tears and slight reduction at one side are normal conditions for 19th century envelopes. Folded lettersshould be expected to have at least one file fold. Light cleaning of covers and small mends along the edges are accepted forms ofconservation. Unusual covers may have a common stamp with a slight crease or tiny tear. These flaws exist in virtually all 19th centurycovers and are not always described. They are not grounds for return.

Catalogue Values and EstimatesUnless otherwise noted, the currently available Scott Catalogue values are quoted in dollars with a decimal point. Other catalogues areoften used for foreign countries or specialized areas and are referred to by their common name: Stanley Gibbons (SG), Dietz, American AirMail Catalogue (AAMC), Michel, Zumstein, Facit, etc. Estimates are indicated with an “E.” and reflect our conservative valuation in dollars.Reserves will never exceed the low end of the estimate range; they will sometimes exceed Scott Catalogue value for stamps in ExtremelyFine condition.

Because of certain pricing inconsistencies in the Scott Catalogue—for example, blocks that have no gum, the absence of premiums for MintN.H. items, etc.—we cannot guarantee the accuracy of values quoted for multiples, specialized items and collection lots. We generally tryto be conservative, but buyers may not return a lot because of a discrepancy in catalogue value due to Scott pricing inconsistencies.

Disturbed Original Gum: Gum showing notice ableeffects of humidity, climate or hinging over more thanhalf of the gum. The significance of gum disturbancein valuing a stamp in any of the Original Gumcategories depends on the degree of disturbance, therarity and normal gum condition of the issue andother variables affecting quality. For example, stampsissued in tropical climates are expected to have somegum disturbance due to humidity, and such conditionis not considered a negative factor in pricing.

Our descriptions contain detailed information and observationsabout each item’s condition. We have also assigned grades tostamps and covers, which reflect our subjective assessment. Forstamps, the margin width, centering and gum are described andgraded according to generally-accepted standards (anapproximate correlation to numeric grades is provided at right).Although we believe our grades are accurate, they are not alwaysexactly aligned with third-party grading terms or standards for allissues. A lot may not be returned because a certification servicegrades a stamp lower than the grade stated in the description.Information from the P.S.E. Stamp Market Quarterly and P.S.E.Population ReportSM is the most current available, but lots maynot be returned due to errors or changes in statistics or data.

Extremely Fine Gem (90-100): The term “Gem” describes conditionthat is the finest possible for the issue. This term is equivalent to“Superb” used by grading services.Extremely Fine (80-90): Exceptionally large/wide margins or nearperfect centering.Very Fine (70-85): Normal-size margins for the issue and well-centered with the design a bit closer to one side. “Very Fine andchoice” applies to stamps that have desirable traits such as richcolor, sharp impression, freshness or clarity of cancel.Fine (60-70): Smaller than usual margins or noticeably off center.Pre-1890 issues may have the design touched in places.Very Good (below 60): Attractive appearance, but margins orperforations cut into the design.

Page 7: The Scarsdale CollectionThe Scarsdale Collection Part Nine—Sale 1039 Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 1:30 P.M. (Lots 101-266) United States Postal Stationery and Postal Cards Offered

THE SERIES OF MAGNIFICENT SCARSDALE COLLECTION SALES BEGAN INApril 2006 with exceptional quality United States stamps and, continuing through

2012, has showcased outstanding collections of United States Revenues, Beer Stamps andMatch & Medicine Stamps.

The collector’s twin objectives have remained an advanced level of completion combinedwith outstanding quality whenever possible. Those goals have been met once again withthis extraordinary holding of United States Postal Stationery and Postal Cards.

The ninth Scarsdale sale will disperse this collection and allow a new generation anopportunity to acquire both the great rarities of the area, as well as examples of the morecommon issues in uncommonly choice condition.

The embossed stamped envelopes and postal cards issued by the United States constituteone of the most challenging areas in philately. Defined by die type, color, paper and water-mark, the “U” numbers of the Scott Catalogue include some of the greatest rarities inUnited States philately. The collector behind the Scarsdale Collection preferred unusedfull corners and entires, and accepted cut squares or used examples only when the formerwere unavailable. The result is a nearly complete representation of postal stationery fromthe 1853 Nesbitt Issue through the 1926 Issue and Officials, including several uniqueitems. Postal cards also received full treatment, with iconic rarities such as the “LibraryCard” and a Full-Face McKinley card, as well as exposition cards.

Of the many areas of philately pursued by the Scarsdale collector, postal stationery washis self-proclaimed favorite. He met and corresponded with many of the leading collectorsand specialists in the field and made this the only area of his collection in which he wentbeyond the listings in the Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue.

To encourage new collectors who may be interested in this area, we are offering theextensive balance of the postal stationery collection as the first lot in the sale, which willenable a collector to complete the bulk of the Scott numbers—most as full corners, and allin outstanding condition—before focusing on the rarer individual items.

There has never been a better time to acquire postal stationery. We encourage collectorswho are looking for new mountains to conquer to seriously consider this fascinating area.

—SCOTT R. TREPEL

Postal Stationery and Postal Cards

Note Regarding United Postal Stationery Society Catalogue Numbers and Scott Catalogue ValuesUPSS numbers are provided for entires and for full corners or cut squares where the number can bedetermined. All die numbers are from the most recent 19th and 20th Century UPSS catalogues. Fullcorners are not priced in the Scott Catalogue. Values quoted in this sale catalogue are Scott Retail valuesfor cut squares. A footnote in Scott states that full corners command a 25% premium over cut squares.

Mint card, without printed address, clear impression, wonderfully fresh..............................................VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT BLACK FULL-FACE McKINLEY POSTALCARD. EXTREMELY RARE WITHOUT THE PRINTED ADDRESS. .................................................

As an indication of rarity, the Scott Catalogue prices the card without printed address at$19,000.00, versus $3,500.00 with the printed address. The entire stock of 500 cards wasinadvertently sent from Washington to Booth, Dailey & Ivins in New York where theywere shortly thereafter pre-printed with their address and garbage dumping informationon the back to be filled out by the tug captain. As a result of the printing there remainedno mint cards for collectors. This “Unmarked Specimen” long ago became accepted as afull mint card in order to allow collectors to have a complete unused collection. AlbertDaggett, the contractor for the printing of the Full Face card, was never able to satisfythe Post Office in Washington due to sub-standard quality of his productions. All submit-ted samples were rejected and as a result the entire stock of 1,625,000 cards was ordereddestroyed by the PMG on April 29, 1902. ..............................................................................
