VBS Registration Continues for Workshop of Wonders Mark your calendars for the week of June 9-13, 6 to 8:30 pm, for our Workshop of Wonders VBS, where children will discover how the ordinary becomes extraordinary with God! Children will meet people from the Bible who used materials on hand to make something amazing with God…the God who works wonders. The cost per child is only $7.00 each, which includes a t-shirt and one CD of the great music, guaranteed for those who are pre-registered. More VBS information is found on page 6.

Building (Ourselves) for Outreach: the $64,000 Question Dear Friends, Now that we are enjoying the capital part (the Elevator Addition) of our Building for

Outreach project, several members have been asking when and how we are going to make use of the mission outreach part. This letter will bring you up to date.

If you remember, the Session committed 10% (a tithe) of all Building for Outreach receipts to

be devoted to new outreach efforts for our congregation. Since we have more than $640,000 pledged to the project, the monies available for new outreach will eventually amount to more than $64,000.

As Building for Outreach receipts come in, our Financial Secretary (Marcie Straley) and

Bookkeeper (Jack Riddell) enter 10 percent to a separate fund entitled “Mission—Building for Outreach.”

The Session wants to engage interested members in determining use for this money,

especially in thoughtfully considering this question: How can we best utilize these funds not only to help others, but to help ourselves grow in our capacity to reach out to our neighbor with the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ? This is our real $64,000 question (all due respect to the bygone game show).

We have the blessing of plenty of time, so I hope we can generate the conversation broadly

across the congregation, hearing from everyone, learning and thinking together. That conversation is our next step. Last January, four ruling elders and I received training for a “Mission School,” a course designed for churches to

(1) Raise mission consciousness, (2) Implement new mission activity, and (3) Develop a mission-focused congregation where members are engaged with the world

around them. The Session is exploring ways that this course could be a vehicle for our conversation and how best to fit it in with other major projects underway, such as God Sightings and Stephen Ministry training.

If you want to be involved in the conversation, contact Outreach Commission Chairman Mark

Hughes (286-6189 or hughesmark106@gmail.com ), so he can be sure you are included. Ideas are welcome at any time, yet we intend to follow a process such as the Mission School to arrive at an optimal answer to our $64,000 question.

Devoting to mission outreach a tithe of our capital giving was and is a HUGE act of faith! I am

grateful for the commitment of these church leaders who are completing years of service as active leaders in the church’s ordered ministries:

Ruling Elder John O’Malley completed five consecutive years on Session, and Marylou Somogyi completed a three year term.

Persevere in Prayer for All Who Continue to Sacrifice for Us! Let’s also remember in our prayers and lend our encouraging help to those members who are

continuing in major volunteer leadership roles for Sugar Creek. Seven deacons are returning for another year of leadership!: Stanley Aultz, Debbie

Ellington, Abby Staley Elton, Kathryn Graham, Tish Lamb, Irwin Roberts, and Janice Simmons.

Four ruling elders accepted additional terms on Session: Troy Martin (1 yr), Jenni Cyprych, George Lamb and Marge Morgan (3 yrs).

Ten ruling elders continue their service on Session (and are mid-term): Mark Brunn, Donna Courtney, Laurie Elder, Debbie Ellington, Dan Gouge, Mark Hughes, Denise Manley, Ann Mundhenk, JoAnne Riddell, and Tori Statt.

Session-elected leaders also continue their service: Bill Henry as Assistant Financial Secretary (beginning 2nd year), Brian Smith and Jeannette Myers as treasurer (beginning 3rd year), Marcie Straley as Financial Secretary (beginning 3rd year), and Ann Mundhenk as clerk (beginning 6th year).

Rejoice and Bless the Ones the Holy Spirit Has Called Now to Serve! We rejoice in members’ willingness to say YES to service as leaders for our church. New Terms

begin on July 1. God bless all who answered the call!! Janice Studebaker will be installed as a Deacon Aimee Lamb and Jackie Myers will be ordained as Ruling Elders, each accepting 3-year

terms on Session. Let us support these leaders with our continual prayers, encouragement, and willing

participation, as they help us all follow the living Christ and bear Christ’s light to the world.

Please be sure to attend 10:00 am worship service on June 29, to participate in Ordination and Installation ceremony and prayers.

Recycling at Sugar Creek Supports Children & Youth

Please continue to bring in your aluminum cans and paper for recycling to church. Both of the containers are located in the newly constructed alcove outside the Commons in the upper parking lot. The funds raised for the aluminum cans go to support the Youth Mission trip fund. Currently the paper recycling company is not offering a rebate for the remainder of 2014 but is hoping to resume the rebate program in 2015. Until then, please continue to bring in your paper to be recycled by the company as it allows us to continue to be “green” and save the landfills.

Family Ministry News K.C.C. Volunteers Needed! K.C.C., also known as Kids with Christian Character, is our summer program during the worship service for children ages 3 through the 5th grade. Wendy is in need of one adult and one youth volunteer for each week to lead the movie and snack (no prep needed!), and the sign-up sheet is in the Cove. Volunteers are still needed for: June 15, July 13 and July 20.

BUILDINGS & GROUNDS

Serving through Mission is a very important part of our VBS week

together. To help the children to connect with helping other children, we are supporting the non-profit organization “Crayons to Classrooms”. Each year Dayton area teachers spend more than a $1,000 of their own money to make sure their low-income students have the supplies they need to be successful in the classroom. This organization supports 57 area schools that serve low income areas and have given in excess of 4 million dollars of school supplies to classrooms since 2009. There is a purple flyer in the Cove that lists the new supplies we will be collecting [also listed below]. If you would like to support this VBS mission, you can bring in school supplies that are listed below OR a financial donation anytime leading up to VBS or during the week of June 9.

Volunteers Needed for VBS Set Days We still need your help! On Saturday, May 31, beginning at 10 am, we will have our 3rd and final set day to make sure all of our creations are ready to go for VBS. On Saturday, June 7, also at 10 am, we will be creating the Wonder Workshop in the Sanctuary. We will be setting up our hallway of construction with oversize lego’s, blueprints and more as well as our “Crayons to Classrooms” mission area. We have a great time together, and if we have many volunteers, our time will go quickly. Please call Wendy (298-3743) with any questions!

VBS Music Practices There are two more practices for the VBS band and all the youth who are music leaders: Sunday, June 1 at 4 pm, and the final practice on Sunday, June 8, from 2 to 3:30 pm. Please be sure to be here and on time so we can be ready to lead worship during Workshop of Wonders.

Kirkmont Summer Camp At press time for the Scribe, we have 33 campers who will be at Kirkmont this summer learning God’s love for them! Thank you to those who contributed $2,095 to pay for scholarships for our campers. There’s nothing like getting mail while you’re away at camp, so we will be listing the names of the campers and the week they will be at camp in the bulletins

so you can send a note or postcard to them. Please allow 2-3 days lead time for the mail to arrive, and don’t worry if you don’t know each child, as they will know you by your love from Sugar Creek! Please note that the children will be listed in the bulletin 2 weeks prior to each camp!

Thank you to our Volunteers! The Christian Nurture Commission and staff are so grateful for the 75+

volunteers who contributed to the life of our congregation’s spiritual growth and pathway to Discipleship this past year. Volunteers gave their love, devotion, patience and creativity in many capacities: GYD (Growing Young Disciples), ReVive, God Sightings small groups, Holy Chaos, Youth Fellowship, t.y.p., Children’s Choirs, special intergenerational events and much more! To honor our many volunteers this year, a financial donation will be given to the Shoes4theshoeless, the organization that VBS supported last year that helps put thousands of new shoes and socks on underserved children in the Dayton area. At Sugar Creek and in Kettering, you are making a difference in many lives with your generous hearts, and we thank you!

Youth Ministry News

EPPIC SNAC Welcome Party June 8 This year’s party will be from 4-6:30 pm at the Brunn Home. It’s time to welcome the rising 7th graders into our EPPIC fun! ALL students entering 7th grade through graduating seniors are welcome to come for a fun evening in and around the pool. Please bring a bathing suit and towel as well as a side or dessert to share; dinner

will be provided. A carpool will meet at 3:30 pm at SCPC and return at 7 pm. Otherwise meet at the Brunn Home (101 Akins Ct, Springboro, OH 45066; phone 937-550-4212). Please Pray for our 2014 High School Mission Team From June 14-21 our youth and adult volunteers will be serving with Next Step Missions in this year’s Rural Mission Trip to Lorain County, Ohio. Lorain County watched poverty statistics skyrocket over the past few years. Perhaps the most troubling statistic is that over half of Lorain’s senior citizens currently live below the poverty line. Next Step has come along side Neighborhood Alliance, a Lorain County based nonprofit, who delivers 400 meals a day to Lorain’s senior citizens. Students will work on projects to repair leaky roofs, fix broken doors and windows, re-tile floors and build wheelchair ramps for people who can no longer walk. This is a great opportunity to lend a helping hand to some of Lorain’s most vulnerable residents.

Engineering, with a concentration in Aerospace. Tyler has been accepted at University of Dayton Master’s Program in Aerospace.

2. Tony Lamb graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. 3. Jordan T. Long, son of Nolan Long, graduated from the University of Georgia/Athens with a master’s

degree in Public Administration. 4. Katie Mauch graduated from Wittenberg University on May 17 with a double major in Political Science/

International Studies and a double minor in Chinese and Spanish.

Retirees 1. Terry Mundhenk retired May 1, 2014 after 48 years in practice of Pharmacy. 2. Jim Wampler retired October 31, 2013 after 30 years with the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The Deacons Are Ready to Help. The Key Deacon is the Deacon who is primarily responsible for attending

to the needs of the hospitalized members/friends of the congregation. Also, when the pastor is away, the Key Deacon (along with the on-call pastor) is available to assist with any other special needs or concerns. The Transportation Deacon is available to meet any church-related transportation needs. Key Deacon for June 1-15 is Stanley Aultz (866-0444); June 16-30 is Tish Lamb (435-6692). Discovering Stephen Ministry We, the Stephen Leadership Team, would like to thank you, our congregation, for your thoughtful, prayer-filled participation in the Stephen Minister application process. We received FIVE completed applications!! If God is still speaking to you, it is not too late for you to complete your application. What is the next step?? Interviews with all the applicants will be conducted to give both the Stephen Leader Team and the volunteer a chance to be absolutely certain that he or she understands what it means to be a Stephen Minister; is willing and able to make the commitment necessary to be a Stephen Minister; has appropriate gifts for this ministry. Once the Stephen Ministers have been selected, then training will begin. Our church is partnering with the Westminster Presbyterian Church to provide training for our new Stephen Ministers. This training will begin in September 2014 and include 50 hours to equip each minister with the basics they need to begin establishing caring relationships. We are excited about our partnership with our sister church as it is an opportunity to share our resources and to build connections! Please continue to pray for our Stephen Ministry as it moves forward!

Retirees’ Lunch Bunch June 10 & July 8, 2014

Lunch Bunch will visit Hazel Grill and Tavern (8901 Kingsridge Dr., Dayton, OH 45458) in June and Jimmie’s Italian Kitchen (3002 Woodman Dr., Dayton, OH 45420) in July. All retirees are invited to join us for fun, food and fellowship. Each month a sign-up sheet will be placed in the Cove so you can sign up for that month’s restaurant. If at any time you need a ride, please put “ride” beside your name on the sheet. If you have any questions, please call Jan or Les Detrick at 293-6111.

CONGREGATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

Email Prayer Chain and Sunday Prayers You can receive a printed list of the prayer requests shared aloud in worship services. (This is not to be confused with the prayers written on the “Everybody Counts” blue sheets, which are considered confidential and shared only with Pastor Julia and the Deacons.) To receive the Sunday Prayer Requests, just send an email to Jessie Fleeman at office@sugarcreekchurch.org, and you will be added to the email distribution group. In addition, you will receive the prayer requests submitted throughout the week. It is a privilege to remember others in prayer and, of course, a responsibility to handle information respectfully.

Have a Prayer Request? Contact the Prayer Chain! Many Sugar Creek members faithfully remember others in prayer—it is a marvelous strength of our community! You can send a prayer request to the church office (office@sugarcreekchurch.org), and Jessie Fleeman will forward it to those who will pray. Please remember that God knows every need, so you are free to limit the amount of information you share. You can use a first name if you want, but may not need to (i.e. “please pray for my co-worker”). You can be general about the request (“healing”), or more specific (“positive response for tomorrow’s MRI”). Less is generally better than more, when it comes to how much to share. Those who know you are likely to follow up with personal contact with you, and that is often a better context for fuller sharing—partly because you’ll get immediate response!

Vocalists/Instrumentalists Needed

We are searching for vocalists/instrumentalists to enrich the service during the summer!

Do you have a song, duet, solo, or ensemble piece you would like to share before, during or

after the service? We would like to enlist your talent. The Prelude, Offering and Postlude

spots are all possibilities. Shy? Don’t know what to do? Have stage fright? We’ll do our best to help! If you

LOWER MARSH CREEK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

GETTYSBURG, PENNYSLVANIA

My wife Brenda and I enjoy American History and genealogy. Most of our leisure and

vacation time is spent pursuing either one of these activities. Over the past few years we have made

several trips to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania because it has afforded us the opportunity to do both. We

have spent many days exploring the massive battlefield, walking where soldiers fought and died,

taking photographs and visiting museums.

We also discovered that Brenda has ancestors that settled in the Gettysburg and surrounding

areas during the eighteenth century. Brenda did some research and discovered her 5th great

grandparents; William and Elizabeth McClean were buried in a country cemetery several miles west

of Gettysburg. We were excited when we located their grave markers. Elizabeth was buried in 1784

and William 1785 in the Lower Marsh Creek Cemetery a few miles down a one lane gravel road. It is

also the original site of The Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church. The Church was an unheated

log structure and in 1790 a new church was built near Fairfield Road. It was constructed of stone

gathered from local farms. Just as the early members of Sugarcreek brought their own seats to

worship services, the early members of Lower Marsh Creek brought stones. When we realized this

was the same church, we decided we would attend worship on our next trip to Gettysburg.

Pieces of the Past (Cont.)

Easter flowers for Services 4/20/2014

A few weeks ago Brenda and I returned to Gettysburg and attended the Easter Sunday

Service at the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church. The Church has grown and expanded

throughout the years and electricity was finally installed in 1942. The offices, classrooms and

Fellowship Hall is in a modern building across the parking lot, but services are held in the old stone

sanctuary. The Worship services were lovely, and the people were friendly, and it was a joy

spending our Easter Sunday with them.

We are scheduling another trip to Gettysburg this fall to explore and research the history of

our country and family. Our original plan was to attend a different church each time, but we

enjoyed and were enlightened by our visit that we have cancelled those plans and will happily

return to the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church.
