PRODUCT INFORMATIONS

• The SaphyRAD C is an optimized version of SaphyRAD E, which is the contamination meter

used by the EDF Group to control radioactive contamination at the exits of nuclear facilities’

controlled areas. It was developed to adapt to the needs of additional businesses such as

the Industry, the Research and the Medical sectors. The SaphyRAD is compliant with the

ALARA principle as it performs an effective contamination control which certifies that the

radiation exposure of workers is « As Low As Reasonably Achievable ».

Configurable radionuclides library

• The user is able to select the radionuclide that he/she wants to control (for example : 123I for

parcel control in nuclear medicine; 18F for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) or 137Cs in

nuclear reprocessing plant).

• The user can also set up his/her own radionuclides library up to 30 configurable efficiencies,

including four to be created for his/her specific needs.

Wide range of probes

• The SaphyRAD C has a wide range of probes which allows it to adapt to all the user’s needs.

• Three sizes of probes are available which allow it to adapt to all surfaces to detect all types

of radioactivity: 31 cm2, 100 cm2 and 170 cm2.

• It is also possible to choose the probe depending on the type of radioactivity we want to

detect. Indeed, there are: a probe with one measurement channel for a αβγ total count, and

a probe with two measurement channels which allows to discriminate Alpha particles from

Beta/Gamma particles.

Strengthening of the measurement window

• The SaphyRAD C has three layers of mylar to prevent the measurement window from

breaking or drilling. These layers of mylar also protect the detector against dust and reduce

the detection of light photons, in case of scintillation detectors.

• As for the grating, its protects the mylar, strengthens the measurement window and

therefore reduces the risk of perforation.

non-specialized public.

Remarks Arguments

Are your performances in alpha detection as satisfactory as your competitors?

In comparison with our competitors, the decreasein alpha sensibility can be explained by the

strenghtening of the measurement window, whichmeans a lower risk of perforation and the reduction

of maintenance costs.

The SaphyRAD has lower detection performances than its competitors.

The SaphyRAD has some advantages thatcompetitors don’t have, such as a lower

background noise and lower MDA (Minimum Detectable Activity).

Apparently, the smear support may not be adaptedto the probe and can contaminate it

A piece of metal has been added on the smear-support to press the sample against the plate to

minimize contacts with the probe, thus limiting the contamination risk.

Is the floor-stand compatible with all the probes ?Evolutions are in progress in order to make the

floor-stand compatible with 100 cm2 and 170 cm2

probes.

Can the measurement window be drilled?

The tree layers of mylar as well as the gridstrengthen the measurement window and reduce

the risk of perforation. However, in case of perforation, kits of grating+mylar are available to

replace the damaged window.

I thought Bertin had purchased Saphymo, why isthe « Saphymo » logo always on the monitor?

The « Saphymo » logo only appears on the last stocks of the SaphyRAD. « Bertin » logo will befound on new the series of SaphyRAD C and

SaphyRAD E.

Several innovations have been registered for the SaphyRAD, for example :

/ CONTEXT

SaphyRAD is a multi-probes, handheld contamination meter designed to control the alpha, beta, gamma

radioactive contamination in both medical field and sectors related to the use of radioactivity.

Intuitive and ergonomic, it can be handled. by non-specialist operators for a simple and efficient control.

Numerous pharmaceutical industries, health and

research facilities use radioactive sources on a daily

basis for treatment or as radioactive tracer.

Therefore, the staff are inevitably exposed to a risk of

contamination which needs to be controlled.

The workers involved are various: radiopharmacists,

radiographer and everyone in contact with exposed

individual and surfaces.

Various types of contamination may occur: internal

contamination (inhalation, ingestion, injuries) or

external contamination through direct contact with

radioactive sources.

A radioelement library is integrated into the

SaphyRAD, up to 30 cuztomizable nuclides : for

example, the user selects the element to be

measured (125I, 99mTc etc.), carries out a radioactive

package control and can compare his measurement

to regulatory threshold value.

/ CONTAMINATION CONTROL

In order, to reduce the general risk of contamination

and to improve the safety of staff and patients, Bertin

has developed a radioactive contamination control

system which detects alpha, beta and gamma

radiation: the SaphyRAD.

This new contamination meter is equipped with a

visual alarm, a proximity sensor along with a full range

of probes which allows it to adapt to all surfaces (31

cm2 or 100/170 cm2) and to detect all types of

radioactivity (total count αβγ or separated count α and

βγ) by direct control or smear sample.
