Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert
I pray the recent attacks on Catholic Churches are a fad and not the beginning of a trend. Whenever there is social unrest it
brings together many different groups who want social change. These groups often have nothing in common except that they
want change. The problem throughout history is that the Church is often harmed in drastic social/political change. That
doesn't mean we need to condemn necessary change, but we do have to challenge any evil that gets attached to something that
is good.
Each week we get a few more parishioners back to church. Just a reminder we only can accommodate 180-200 (depending on
how many from the same household can sit together) in the main church. If you arrive a few minutes before Mass or after it
has started you may be directed to the activity center for "overflow" seating. You may also go directly to the activity center if
you want to come back to Mass, but want more room for social distancing.
Those who need a low gluten Host or would like to receive the Host on the tongue should make their way up to the sanctuary
(where the servers usually kneel at Mass) as soon as we end Mass, please do not wait for the music to end.
As of the beginning of this month, our parish has received 245 DSA commitments from our parishioners in the sum of
$79,286, putting us at just over 50% of our parish goal of $157,663. Thank you for your contributions.
The Family Fully Alive . . .
Reflection:
It must be all the turbulence in our midst, everyone seems to be talking
about the end times. The readings these past few weeks in Ordinary Time
have shown us Jesus using parables to teach his disciples about this. The
goal of the end times is for us to dwell in the Kingdom of God; life with
Christ forever. This goal is worth more than anything we possess. It is
worth every effort we can make. Achieving it is worth more than our
lives (Matthew 16:25).
Whether we have stumbled across our faith by “accident,” as the first
person in today’s parable, or searched diligently for it, as the merchant
did, the realization that you have found the treasure, the pearl of great
price, demands a response. What are we willing to give? The right
answer (to be ‘a good fish’) is “everything”.
Scripture Alive . . .
Wait! There’s more! See the Catechism of the Catholic Church numbers
674-677. You can also read a description of heaven in the book
of Revelation, chapters 21 to 22 (the last two chapters of the Bible). MMF
Quote of the day:
Catholics, while always respecting the free will of every man, have an
obligation to be spiritually prepared, to evangelize, and to advance the
Kingdom.

JULY 26, 2020 MATTHEW 13:44-52
Jesus said to his disciples:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in
a field, which a person finds and hides again, and
out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys
that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of
great price, he goes and sells all that he has and
buys it.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown
into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.
When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to
put what is good into buckets. What is bad they
throw away.
Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels
will go out and separate the wicked from the
righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
“Do you understand all these things?”
They answered, “Yes.”
And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been
instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the
head of a household who brings from his
storeroom both the new and the old.”

Dear Parish Family,
In the past few weeks, we have shared information and invited your prayerful consideration
of support for the 2020 Diocesan Services Appeal “Happy the one who trusts in the Lord!”
If you have recently submitted your contribution, thank you! On behalf of our parish and the
wider church, I thank you for helping to support dozens of ministries that offer direct
assistance to individuals and families and to our parishes, Catholic schools, and Catholic
Charities agencies. We can only meet our parish goal and provide the support needed to sustain and grow these crucial
services with the active engagement of all of our parishioners.
If you have yet to make your gift decision, please do so today. Pledge envelopes are available at the Welcome Desk and
parish office, or you may visit the secure online DSA giving page at www.dioceseoflansing.org/dsa to participate in sowing
the seeds that will reap a bountiful harvest. May you be blessed for your generosity.

I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.

Here is a special invitation to YOU!!
On Wednesday, August 5, at 6:30 pm, come to the
Church Parking Lot for a "Live Rosary " said from our
cars!!
Yes, from our cars. The rosary will be led by our director
of music ministry, Freeman, and played over the
(Applefest) loud speakers so everyone can hear and
participate as we pray for God's will for our St. John
Parish.
Let’s make this a Family Event, bring the kids; they can
wiggle in the car and pray at the same time. Everyone is
invited!! Spread the word.
Please mark WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 6:30 PM on
your calendar. We will meet in the church parking lot,
roll our car windows down and together we will lift our
voices to God and ask Him to direct and guide us as His
people.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us. If you have
any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or
Freeman, we are always here for you.
Peace & Joy,
Sandy

This Week . . .
SAINT MARTHA Feast Day: July 29
Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or annoying,
she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes Martha—
saint, not Stewart—as “burdened with much
serving” (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to
Jesus, Martha complained, “Do you not care that my
sister has left me by myself to do the serving?” Jesus’
response, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried
about many things . . . Mary has chosen the better
part” (10:41, 42), suggests the superiority of the
contemplative life, leaving the rest of us, supporting
families, earning livings, (helping others?), as second-
class Christians. But Luke introduces Martha and Mary
immediately after Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan,
whom Jesus recommends as a model of practical
compassion, concluding, “Go and do likewise” (10:37).
Go and do! Sit and listen! Discipleship is never either/or
but both/and. Jesus ministered in prayerful silence and
hospitable service. Monastic calendars add Martha’s
sister, Mary, and brother, Lazarus, calling all three “hosts
of the Lord,” recalling their welcome of Jesus to their
home in Bethany, reminding us Whom it is that we
welcome whenever we extend summertime hospitality!
—Peter Scagnelli
Each week I do a video for children that [usually] focuses on the Gospel reading and tries to offer practical tips to letting that message inspire us the whole week. This is generally a video version of the
Children’s Liturgy of the Word that we offered during the 11 am. Mass on Sunday mornings pre-Covid. As well as trying to engage children actively during the video, an email goes home with suggested discussion questions to use during the week.
I also LOVE to have our parish children active in the video! Special thanks to the Dostie family who help every week, but many other families have also contributed….photos, video clips, and some of our children serve as lectors. If your child would like to be
involved, let me know!
Each week’s video can be found on the parish website at the top of the Children’s Religious Education page. Or, ask me and I’ll add you to the mailing list that gets a link each Sunday along with the discussion questions.

Hard to believe we are almost through July and that we are
getting our campus ready to welcome back students and staff.
There has been some maintenance work done, and other work
scheduled to be done. The work completed was a roof repair
to the Activity Center. Just a small patch to ensure that it
wouldn't leak. We also had some stairs repaired to the
exterior of the second level of the school. Thank you to
several Knights of Columbus for generously contributing to
the repairs to the steps.
Work scheduled to take place is replacing the 2nd floor
HVAC in the school. We are anticipating students returning
to the school this fall and because we will need to provide
social distancing, with the number of students we currently
have enrolled, we will need to utilize this space.
I am looking forward to hearing children back on campus and
in the school, they have been missed so much.

the Domestic Church . . . . Council of Catholic Women . . . . "HOPE"..... Deacon Dan's sermon last week hit home for me. The virus has changed all our lives, or has forced us to put our lives on hold. We have all our freedoms, but it seems we are not free to do many things. This week I am praying and asking for forgiveness for being ungrateful for all God has given me. Being able to attend church, having a good home, having food on my table and being able to call friends. No more ‘poor me’ or ‘my cup is half empty’. It's time to get back on track to being grateful for all God has given me. Counting my blessings and praying for patience to get through this unusual time in our lives. I HOPE you can do the same.
No events have been scheduled at this time. Many of the ladies I spoke with are not ready to gather in a group yet. I hope that soon things will change for the better. I miss the good times we share.
Our sunshine lady, Jean Cairnduff, can use some prayers for recovery after back surgery. A phone call or a card might brighten her day.
I have been trying to up date our phone list and have found many house phones have been disconnected in favor of a cell phone. If you are willing to share your new number please call me at 810-423-9237.
Thank God for our faith and the freedom to practice it. Pray for a vaccine against Covid 19. Have a Blessed week. Sandy Tryles
For Knights of Columbus, when a man joins our Order, he receives a Knights of Columbus rosary – at 1.9 million members, that’s a lot of rosaries. Praying the rosary is an ac vity that our members do communally as part of council life.
The rosary consists of the Apostle’s Creed, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, the Glory Be, along with other prayers. However, in between each decade, we are invited to reflect on the Mysteries of the Gospel: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous.
In these mysteries, we rediscover, examine, and ponder the stories from the Gospel, and discover the real meaning of those events in the silence of our hearts. So, in solidarity, let us pray to our most gracious advocate, the Blessed Mother, for peace throughout the world, and within our souls. It only takes 15 minutes. kofc.org
When walking into a Catholic
Church, the presence of the Lord
is palpable. There is such peace
that it brings about an automatic
response to be quiet and still and
know that it is God. He permeates the atmosphere and it
is lovely. What is the atmosphere like in our domestic
church?
Every member living in a household contributes to the
atmosphere in a home. The disposition of one member
will influence the tone of others. Of course, some people
are more naturally positive while others can be more of a
negative nature. Negativity can quickly turn a sunny
disposition into grumpy. The atmosphere becomes
unpleasant. The power lies in welcoming the Holy Spirit
to take over and flood our domestic church with the
presence of God. It reminds me of the hymn, Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, You are
welcome here
Come flood this place and
fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our
hearts long for
To be overcome by Your
presence, Lord.
The power of the Holy Spirit
dwells with the baptized. We
have the power to permeate
the atmosphere around us with the presence of the Lord.
Children have the power of the Holy Spirit too. When
bickering takes place between siblings or spouses, we can
call upon the power of the Holy Spirit within us and
contribute peace and love to the atmosphere. Starting the
day with prayer, smiling, cuddling, sets the tone for a
glorious day in the presence of God. Each of us, children
and parents alike, has the power to call upon the Holy
Spirit. Let’s help one another in our household to do just
that and fill our domestic church with the joy of the Lord.
