Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert
Reflecting on the Word If you or I were looking for “followers,” I think we would want to put a cheery face on our mission, glossing over the hard spots and emphasizing the best parts.
Jesus, on the other hand, pulls no punches. He points out that following his mission may lack comfort: “the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” You may need to drop everything else: “Let the dead bury their dead.” And, it will be a full commitment: “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” This will be a challenging journey. But, what is heaven worth?
I can never hear this reference to the plow without thinking of my grandpa. When he was a boy, the family had a plow that attached behind the work horse. He said when getting ready for the planting, it was important to get the first furrow straight, to set the course for all others. So, my grandpa would spot a tree on the far side of the field and keep his eyes on it as he drove the horse forward. A rock in the path could nudge the plow off course, but he kept his eyes on the goal. There was no looking back.
The greatest sacrifice for me may be giving up comforts; for another person, it may be giving up control over their schedule; for another, it may be making an “all in” commitment. Whatever is holding you back, remember the goal. Picture Jesus looking into your eyes and saying; “you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
On the way home… What are some things that your family members might put before God? For example, did you spend too much time watching tv and ‘didn’t have time’ for prayers?
Living the Word… Have each family member make a little card that says “put God first”. Tape or set these around at different locations in the house, car or workspace. One may be next to your toothbrush, or on your pillow, reminding you to seek God throughout the day.
THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE Gospel Reading June 30, 2019 Luke 9:51-62
When the days for Jesus' being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him.
On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.
As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."
And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." To him Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God."
Our Parking Lot is finished!!!! Thank you to all those who gave to Witness to Hope diocesan capital campaign (35% of your
contributions are coming back to our parish) and of course our Applefest. (I don't want to hear any complaints about the tent
stakes being pounded into the new parking lot, we wouldn't have the money to operate many of our programs and have enough
savings to do this project without our Applefest.)
My twin brother and my nephew came to visit my parents this week. It was great to see them and especially visit with my
nephew David who I see, at most, once a year (they live in Portland Oregon). What is it with children that when they come up
for air while swimming that they spit in my face? The same thing used to happen with my nephew Franklin.
You might hear in the coming weeks to pray for Robert Copeland. That is my father, who has developed shingles on top of
cancer. Please keep him in your prayers, as well as my mother Jane, who is understandably stressed.

CHILDREN’S BULLETINS!
Moms! Bring a pencil! Beginning this week we will
have children’s Worship Bulletins available at all the
entrances (on the pamphlet racks right next to the regular
bulletins so that children can have a “take-home” activity
each week related to the Sunday readings.
These are entertaining, puzzle-
filled activities that focus on
the readings each week. If the
children want to work on them
during Mass, that’s perfectly
OK, too (just take them with
you!)
Note that there are two
different versions of the bulletin, one aimed at children 3-
6 and the other for older kids.
PLEASE
REGISTER
We need everyone to register RIGHT AWAY for VBS! This year participants will receive a t-shirt printed with
our VBS Logo. So we can order these in time,
registrations need to be in NO LATER THAN July 5.
[Those registering late will get a “color-coded” t-shirt,
just not printed.] Registration can be done online (on the
parish website) or via the registration forms available at
the Welcome Desk and in the Parish Office.
VBS is the week of July 22-26,
6:15—8:30 p.m.
Children graduating Grades K-5;
older children are needed as helpers.

This weekend, several of our youth are
attending the Steubenville Youth Conference
at Franciscan University in Ohio. This
conference is an amazing opportunity for high
school students to encounter Christ through
the Holy Eucharist, dynamic and engaging
speakers from all over the country, and
amazing praise and worship.
Our youth, along with hundreds of other
youth from all over the Midwest are in need of
your prayers as they embark on this journey
with the living God. Please pray that their
hearts and minds would be open to the
movements of the Holy Spirit, and that they
would come to know the love and mercy of our
Father in Heaven in a new and profound way.
Your love, and prayers are one way that
the grace of God is made manifest in our
community. Thank you all for your generous
support of our youth here at St. John. May the
Lord continue to bless you in abundance and
pour out His graces upon you. Keep an Eye
out for a follow up article in a couple of weeks
to see some of the highlights of our trip to
Steubenville.

ST. LUKE’S WOMAN’S CENTER
I received a call from a man wanting to organize help
and funds for St. Luke’s N.E.W. Life Center. They
would like to put together contacts within each Parish to
help find volunteers for service and other activities like
the Giving Tree. St. Luke’s has been transforming into a
training center for men and women. From the trades to
sewing, people are learning life skills in Flint. There are
many volunteers, but many more are needed.
Skilled trades and others who would like to remodel a
home are needed. People who might teach others to do
interviews or help people to know what is expected at a
job interview are examples of needs. People who have
never worked do not necessarily know how to shower,
dress appropriately, speak appropriately. That sounds
like something everyone should know right? No, it’s
probably been part of the culture we grew up with, but
others have not. For a young man or woman who lives
in a family that exists in generational poverty, this is a
revelation.
Collections of Papers Products are needed. Toilet paper
and like products can not be purchased with a Bridge
card. We will try to help them. We want you to
understand we are not going to just pour gifts on people
who are not interested in changing their lives. People
must be able to commit to attending classes and training,
and if they are unable to keep that commitment they are
dropped, and Sr. Carol and volunteers move on to those
who are willing to make the commitment. Deacon Mike
Martin runs the House project. I try to help him as often
as I am able. As I continue to hear from St. Luke’s I will
keep you informed.
END DISMEMBERMENT ABORTION: Also Called, D & E, or dila on and evacua on method, dismemberment abor on uses surgical instruments to grip and remove the baby's limbs, etc. to enable the baby to be removed from the womb.
WHY SHOULD I SIGN THE PETITION TO END DISMEMBERMENT ABORTION IN MICHIGAN?
If we do not successfully pe on, Gov. Whitmer 's promised veto of the par ally-birth abor on ban, passed by our legislature, will add our state to the list who allow this barbaric procedure. Our state gives us the right to ini ate legisla on through a pe on which the GOVERNOR CANNOT VETO! This bill would not only end par al birth abor ons but dismemberment abor on procedures as well.
We invite you to pray the novena prayer below daily through July 2 for the success of the Dismemberment Abor on Ban pe on. This pe on drive, if successful, will override Gov. Whitmer's promised veto of the Dismemberment Ban which has already passed the legislature.
When the pe ons are available, hopefully July 4 weekend, our parish campaign will begin.
In the interim WE NEED TO PRAY!

I hope everyone is enjoying the parking lot. You may have
noticed the additional angled parking on the north side of
the church parking lot. This created more parking for our
parishioners and also helps with the one way entry into the
parking lot. Please keep in mind that the north entrance of
the parking lot is now one way in and the handicap lane is
a one way out. The other exits are to the south of the
parish offices. Signs and arrows have been put in place to
help direct the flow of traffic.
Our summer help has been hard at work on the outside of
the parish offices removing
shrubs and loose stone.
Thanks for all your hard
work around the campus!
Stewardship Corner
Offertory Observation... In today’s second reading, St Paul provides a wonderful one-sentence summary of Christian stewardship: Out of love, place yourselves at one another’s service. Vocation Views… Will you choose to follow Jesus wherever he goes? To say “yes” without hesitation requires great trust. The reign of God needs servants to trust.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It's high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are among the missing. Some find the summer's call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the sabbatical rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship.
For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live. ” --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

Many are making big sacrifices for world peace. Have a Blessed week.

In the following bullet points you will find
some suggestions on how to build your
“domestic church” through a life of
prayer. This can help all members of your
family. Find something you are not
currently doing and try it! Let’s grow!
Begin praying as a family and reading from Scripture
daily, certainly before meals, but also first thing in the
morning or before bed. Find a time that works for
your family.
Pray a Family Rosary (each member leads a decade,
and everyone shares intentions).
Have a crucifix in a prominent place in the home, and
in every bedroom.
Make the Sacraments a regular celebration – take the
whole family to Confession and Mass!
Make your vacation a holy pilgrimage by visiting the
shrines and saints of our land and the world.
Make worshiping God a priority. Never miss Mass,
even while traveling – go to: www.MassTimes.org to
find a church near you!
Remind their children that they are loved by God and
have been given gifts to serve others.
Welcome into your home and support priests,
brothers, sisters, deacons, and lay ministers in the
Church.
Allow your children to witness you in private prayer.
Encourage your children to pray daily on their own, to
listen for God’s call, and if heard, to respond.
For more ideas on how to build your home as a Domestic
Church, pick up the booklet The Family Fully Alive at the
Welcome Desk in the church gathering space.
