Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert

THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE

Gospel Reading June 9, 2019

John 14:13-16, 23b-26

Jesus said to his disciples: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give

you another Advocate to be with you always.

"Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with

him. Those who do not love me do not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.

"I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach

you everything and remind you of all that I told you."

Summer has arrived! I hope you all have a great one.

Reflecting on the Word “...and I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate” (John 14:15); “...I am sending the promise of the Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49); The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name…” (Jn14:26); “...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1: 8), and so on. We’ve been hearing a lot about Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit in recent weeks, and now the day is here! In a very dramatic way—fire, wind, a new boldness—the Holy Spirit descends on the Apostles. CCC 120 From this hour onward, the mission of Christ and the Spirit becomes the mission of the Church: “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” The Feast of Pentecost has often been referred to as the birthday of the Church. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers. From the Catechism we read: CCC 731 On the day of Pentecost when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end, Christ's Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, manifested, given, and communicated as a divine person: of his fullness, Christ, the Lord, pours out the Spirit in abundance.

We can ask for this Spirit. We can ask for the gifts of the Spirit - and we can ask for this “fire” and boldness to proclaim the truth of our faith.

On the way home… In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus promises that if we keep His commandments he will ask the Father to give us another Advocate to be with us always. Name as many of the Commandments you can remember. Do you remember all ten?

Living the Word… Saint Augustine wrote a prayer to the Holy Spirit; it has been printed on page 13. Easy to memorize, it can be of benefit to repeat each morning before facing the day.

Music and Liturgy. . . Freeman Tucker

T Y !

As my first choir season here has now come to a close, I would like to take a couple minutes to thank everyone for their support of the Music Ministry programs here at St. John.

To Fr. Robert, Fr. Ryan, and my fellow staff members, thank you for your encouragement, support, and counsel as I continue to grow into my position here and as I grow the music programs!

To David, Cheryl, Tom, and Mike, thank you for your willingness to jump in and help!

To the members of the Adult Choir, thank you for your voices, flexibility, encouragement, and especially your patience with your new Music Minister!

To the members of the Handbell Choir, thank you for sticking it out, even when it means ringing more bells than should be humanly possible!

To the members of the Youth Choir, thanks for your attention and your time as you gave up your Monday afternoons to learn more about music!

To the parents of the Youth Choir, thanks for your support and your encouragement of your children as they explore the wonderful world of music!

To the Watchers of the Dawn, thank you for your time and joyful music makings as we explore different ways to express our praise!

To all others who have helped throughout the year, thank you, I couldn’t have made it here without you!

And to all the parishioners, thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and feedback, you help us to truly thrive!

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Sandy Shaker . . . .

Director of Formation, Deacon Dan Medich Jr. . . . .

Today we Celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday

of the church! Jesus promised his apostles, "I will not

leave you orphans: I will come to you. (John 14:18)

" The Advocate, (another name for the Holy Spirit) that

the Father will send in my name, he will teach you

everything and remind you of all that I (meaning Jesus)

taught you." John 14:26

I love this scripture verse and find great comfort in the

words of Jesus. We are not alone, the Holy Spirit is with

us, guiding us and equip-ting us with Gifts,( tools) for

our journey on earth.

Monica Kline joined us last Sunday in RCIA, sharing

with the class how the Holy Spirit works in her life and

her gifts of Mercy and Handwriting.

Amanda Lupu also joined us, sharing her gifts of

Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Writing with the class.

Both of these ladies haven taken the Called and Gifted

course and now are aware of the gifts they have received

from the Holy Spirit. The beauty in all of this is now

they are taking these Gifts and sharing them with

others; touching, lives, just as Jesus has asked us to do.

When we share our gifts, we are bringing Jesus into this

world.

What are your gifts? If you want to learn more about the

Holy Spirit and the gifts you have received from

God, you are invited to attend our next Called and

Gifted Class, which will start on Thursday, September

26th, 6:30 pm till 8 pm. The class is 10 weeks long. We

will meet for 5 weeks, have a 1 week break, (Interviews

take place during the week off. I meet with each person

for 1 hour and we chat, nothing to stress about), and

classes then resume for 5 more weeks.

I am giving all of you plenty of time to think about

taking this class. If you have questions, we have a

number of parishioners who have been through the class

and would love to share with you not only their take of

the class, but how God has enriched their lives with His

Gifts.

Peace & Joy,

Sandy

Youth Night at the Ninja Gym

This past weekend our youth went to the Tri County Ninja gym for an evening of fun, fellowship, and empowerment. We all had a blast running through the different obstacles. The staff at the gym was awesome at teaching everyone the different techniques and empowering us to try our best. We were also blessed to have several parents and volunteers participate alongside the youth. I was personally inspired by everyone’s dedication, perseverance, and willingness to try new and difficult things. After spending a majority of our time learning and having fun on the various obstacles, the staff set up a competition course for us to race against the clock. At the end of the day we all had a lot of good-spirited fun, challenged ourselves and each other to grow and be bold in new ways, and brought glory to God through our effort and determination.

Camping How would you like to go camping? Sounds like fun, right? For many

people around us it is not fun; it is how they live. They have no

transportation other than MTA. They have no home, no shower, other

than a creek that flows through the city. For many Americans that is the

reality of life. They are former employees of area businesses. They are

the brothers and sisters of parishioners. Maybe they attend our church or

one of the other churches in town.

You see them while you are traveling around the area, but you do not

recognize their plight. There is no gate to sit by, like in Jesus’ day. They

simply move about, often wearing a back pack with all of their

possessions in it. They go to the area churches for food and clothing.

They live behind the stores in wood lots, or, if fortunate, in tents. One

person I know is in a wheel chair. Another is just a youth. They all have

a story as to how they came to this point.

We helped someone find a place to live; not an apartment but just a

bedroom. We try to assist him in getting to work. As he becomes able,

we hope he can get an apartment, then build from that point.

This is not as uncommon as most think. Your neighbors are both

homeless and wealthy, well fed and hungry, sleeping in the woods and

between sheets. You would never guess who has and who has not.

Top 10 Abortion Myths: #9: Abortion is a small part of Planned Parenthood’s services

#9: Abortion is a small part of Planned

Parenthood’s services

The Bottom Line: Planned Parenthood is the

number three cause of death in America—if

abortions were counted that way.

This myth is always relevant because of Planned

Parenthood’s situation as the de facto leader of

the abortion movement and the recipient of more

than half a billion taxpayer dollars annually.

https://rtl.org/top-ten-myths-10/

So much of the abortion debate is based on myths, bad assumptions, bad logic, or outright

gas lighting through deception.

School is officially out for St. John students!!! Now the

summer work begins to get the school ready for the next

year. Even though school is out, this is the time we are

able to get some projects done at the school. Teachers will

be packing up their classrooms and getting things put

away so their classrooms can get a deep cleaning, and the

floors can get a fresh polish!

We are bringing back our summertime work program for

students. We had a great turn out and have filled all the

available slots. These students work with our various

groups to complete projects around the campus. We

always look forward to this time, because we are able to

get so much done. Thank you for your continued support

of our school and church!

Offertory Observation...

One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity,

each listener heard God’s word in his or her own language.

The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts

poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be

empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters,

whatever they may be.

SEQUENCE VENI, SANCTE SPIRITUS Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue's sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

Please remember to thank God for your faith and the freedom to practice it. Pray for our parish and our priests. It is a difficult time with diminishing vocations to the Priesthood, we need to pray harder for vocations to increase those numbers. Ask God to rekindle faith in those Catholics who have fallen away from the Church. Pray for our country's leaders and the choices they have to make for us all. Don't forget those who put their lives on the line for peace and safety in our nation and the world. Many are making big sacrifices for world peace. Have a Blessed Week. Sandy Tryles

School’s summer recess has begun. Our domestic church enters the season of summertime, and the Church calendar moves from the end of the Easter season to the beginning this week of Ordinary Time. These new seasons are filled with big family celebrations. There are weddings, graduations, Father’s Day, reunions, vacations; and big Catholic feast days: Pentecost, The Most Holy Trinity Sunday next week, followed by The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (also known as Corpus Christi) the Sunday after that, and then there’s also the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary feast days coming up! All of these family celebrations are precious gifts from God to grow in our knowledge of Him and one another.

As Christian parents, we not only have the responsibility of bringing children into the world, but to bring those children to Jesus. Spending more time together in summer and getting to know one another better, to talk about Jesus and learn about the upcoming special feast days will make our family life extra-ordinary if we keep things simple. I am always trying to think of really fun things to do with my grandchildren, but they are happy just hanging out with us at our house. Let’s encourage one another to pause and appreciate the gift of simply being together and united with God.

There are only two events recorded in scripture of Jesus’ childhood in the Holy Family – the Presentation of baby Jesus in the temple and finding the child Jesus in the temple at 12 years old. We can deduce that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lived a simple Jewish family life which included praying together, learning together, working together, celebrating with family, and caring for one another and their neighbors. If there had been grandiose events in their family life, it would have been talked about and written down. They simply enjoyed being together as a family united to God.

So many times we try to plan big family events that will be bigger and better than the one before. It causes stress, and in some cases financial strain, and complicates our family life. Our goal as a domestic church is to unite in loving God and loving one another. Let’s keep it simple. Blessed Summer!

LOW GLUTEN - HOLY

COMMUNION With an increasing amount of the faithful needing to receive low-gluten hosts for Holy Communion, we find it necessary to make some changes to how we provide this op on to you. If you require a low -gluten host, you DO NOT need to stop by the sacristy and alert the Mass Captain. Recep on of Holy Communion will remain the same. If you are receiving a low-gluten host, you will s ll need to receive from the Eucharis c Minister (Usually the Priests/Deacon) standing right in front of the Altar, there will be a server standing behind them with a gold ciborium containing the Eucharist consecrated from low gluten hosts. You will need to indicate to the presider that you receive low gluten and he will then offer one to you. (This is an accommoda on made for those who have a medical condi on and not a diet preference.) While we o en say these are "gluten free" they are not. They contain extremely low amount of "gluten" just enough to make possible for it to be consecrated. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishop May-June 2017 newsle er states: “Hosts that are completely gluten-free are invalid ma er for the celebra on of the Eucharist. Low gluten hosts (par ally gluten-free) are valid ma er, provided they contain a sufficient amount of gluten to obtain the confec on of bread without the addi on of foreign materials and without the use of procedures that would alter the nature of bread” Remember, if you are unable to receive the Precious Body, even under the species of low-gluten hosts, you can receive Jesus’ Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity by receiving His Precious Blood only.
