The San Diego Center for Algae Biotechnology

The San Diego Center for Algae Biotechnology (SD-CAB) was established in 2008 as a consortium of researchers from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Scripps Institution of Oceanogra-phy (SIO) and San Diego State University (SDSU), in partnership with private industry.

The Center incorporates international research scientists from the fields of biology, chemistry, engineering, economics, and policy. It also trains young scientists, educates the public, collaborates with private sector partners, and facilitates discussion with regional, state and national policy mak-ers regarding the use of algae for energy independence and conservation of land and water, while encouraging the highest standards of academic excellence and objectivity.

Mission Statement

The mission of SD-CAB is to support development of innovative, sustainable, and commercially viable algae-based biotechnology solutions for energy, green chemistry, bio-products, water conservation, and CO2 abatement challenges.

Research Initiatives

SD-CAB supports research in:• Development of biofuels in algae• Development of molecular tools for

engineering algae • Development of co-products in algae: - Nutraceuticals - Protein Therapeutics - Biopolymers • Algal physiology and photosynthesis• Genomic analsis of diverse algal

species• Molecular genetic analysis of algal

gene expression• Metabolic Engineering

SD-CAB’s Agenda

Commercial Partners ProgramOur research goals will be achieved through a focused and integrated R&D effort, which encompasses biology, chemistry, and engineering. SD-CAB offers a multi-tiered Commercial Partners Program that provides a unique opportunity for a range of companies to participate in shaping the algae biotechnology research agenda for our sustainable future.

EDGE InitiativeSD-CAB is proud to be part of the Educating and Developing workers for the Green Economy (EDGE) Initiative. EDGE is developing curriculum and providing education, training and placement services in the biofuels/ industrial biotechnology industry in San Diego and the Imperial Valley.

SD-CAB MembershipParticipation in reseach, development and training by individuals is another key to the success of algae-based biotechnology solutions. SD-CAB offers annual memberships for individual associates and students. Memberships are free and provide access to E-Newletters and invitations to SD-CAB seminars and other events.
