THE GENERALThe General & Commissioner Silvia Cox

General André Cox was born to European Salvation Army officer parents serving in Zimbabwe. Commissioner Silvia Cox (née Volet) was the daughter of European Salvation Army officer parents serving in Argentina. Their international childhoods foreshadowed the global ministry they have shared since their marriage as Salvation Army officers in 1979. The Coxes have lived in Africa and in Europe with their three daughters, Myriam, Esther, and Sarah. The Coxes have held territorial leadership responsibilities in the territories of Finland & Estonia, Southern Africa, and the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland. It was on August 3, 2013 that the then Chief of the Staff, André Cox, was elected the 20th General of The Salvation Army.

As the Army’s international leaders, the Coxes encourage the diligent reading of Scripture, the highest ethical standards that truly reflect sound biblical stewardship, and authentic Christian witness in which belief and behavior are indivisible, thereby ensuring the grace and love of Jesus are wholly reflected in daily living.

The General and Commissioner Silvia testify to God’s generous provision throughout their lives, which, in recent years, has included the great blessing of five delightful grandchildren, Rebecca, Lily, Leona, Wendy, and Kevin.

July 30–August 1

TERRITORIAL LEADERSCommissioners William A. & G. Lorraine Bamford

Commissioner Bill Bamford was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to Salvation Army officer parents. In 1980, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and worked for seven years as a pharmacist in Massachusetts where he and his wife lived. Lorraine Bamford (née Brown) had grown up in the Massachusetts area. She studied foreign languages at Eastern Nazarene College and taught French and Spanish in Hingham, Massachusetts. In 2000, Bill earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Geneva College.

While on vacation at Old Orchard Beach, the Bamfords were called by God to officership and entered the Salvation Army’s School for Officer Training.

They have served in appointments in the Eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware, Western Pennsylvania, Southern New England, and Northeast Ohio divisions. In the South America West Territory, they served for almost four years as Chief Secretary and Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries. This territory encompasses the countries of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Commissioner Lorraine coordinated the Army’s Anti–human trafficking ministries.

Today, they serve as Territorial Commander and as Territorial President of Women’s Ministries, respectively, in the USA Eastern Territory.

Commissioners Bamford are blessed with three children (Michelle, Nicole, and Bill,) and four grandchildren—with another one on the way.

NYSBNew York Staff Band

Since 1887 the New York Staff Band of The Salvation Army (SA) has maintained the highest standards of musical practice and Christian ministry. As one of the nation’s oldest, continuous musical ensembles, the NYSB has rightfully been heralded as “America’s Foremost Brass Band.’” The band’s honored status as the first staff band in SA history is matched by its excellence in musical performance and in its role as a trailblazer in repertoire, programming, and service. While the band performs at a level music critics consider professional, all members of the band are volunteers, none receiving payment for their participation, even though many members have studied at some of America’s finest music schools and conservatories. Members give freely of their time and effort while in the band, all in addition to their regular “day job” as either employees of The Salvation Army or as members of the Army’s clergy.

Throughout its history, the band has continued to interact with contemporary culture by featuring outstanding guest soloists in their festivals or concerts. In just the past few years, these have included world–class groups such as The King’s Singers who joined them in Carnegie Hall for their 125th anniversary concert. Other recent guests include the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, contemporary Christian recording artists Michael W. Smith and Sarah Groves, brass phenomenon James Morrison, and the respected symphony conductor, Bramwell Tovey.

—Dr. Ronald W. Holz O.F., Ph.D.

ETSEastern Territorial Songsters

The Eastern Territorial Songsters (ETS) is a select festival choir made up of Salvation Army soldiers from throughout the USA Eastern Territory. ETS leads worship, provides vocal workshops, and supports territorial functions.

ETS was formally organized in August of 2005 to minister to congregations at the Old Orchard Beach Camp Meetings. The group has been blessed to take part in territorial events in support of leadership and worship teams.

In addition to formal events, ETS has conducted workshops for various territorial and divisional vocal convocations. An evolutionary extension of this effort has brought ETS shoulder–to–shoulder with a number of corps songster brigades (local church choirs in the communities where The Salvation Army has worship centers) as partners in the desire to enhance the worship experience.

All current ETS members are leaders in their respective corps and divisions, as well as supporters of local and divisional music training.

During ETS weekends, the group rehearses the repertory to be performed at current and at future engagements. The sharing of Scripture–centered devotion and peer fellowship is a by–product of that experience.

In the early 2000’s, the group journeyed to Italy. In 2015, it performed in England for the Boundless 2015 Congress. CAST has produced “Godspell,” “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,” and most recently, “Honk!” This year, CAST has taken an all–original show on the road. “Moses” has appeared at Commissioning 2016 (Hershey, Pa.), the Western Bible Conference (Pine Summit Camp, Calif.), as well as at corps, camps, and community centers in Ohio, Maine, New York, and New Jersey.

Ken’s daily radio show, “Lighten Up!,” is heard on over 1,500 stations in the United States and around the world.

Crossfire Brass rehearsals are Monday–Friday at 8:30 am in the Pavilion and are open to all. Bring your instruments!

Army brass banding has been around for as long as the camp meetings, and Crossfire Brass, with Bandmaster Ronald Waiksnoris as its leader, continues that tradition. The band will be the featured group at the Thursday night Praise Gathering at the OOB Pier, and will also support worship at the Friday night camp meeting.

CROSSFIRE BRASS

Since 1885, OOB has been a place of holy happenings where the Gospel is proclaimed and countless lives have been changed. The Salvation Army continues in that tradition by bringing creativity and innovation to authentic Christian witness. It is our hope that, through the ministry of music, dance, spectacle, and spoken word, people will truly find the object of their life’s search—a relationship with Jesus Christ.

This year’s OOB Pier Ministry will be an exciting mission into the skies. “The heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1). Journey with us as we explore our theme, “Search the Limits: Find Jesus!” Colossians 2:9 says, “You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him (MSG).” Many people feel within themselves a deep void that cannot be filled with any earthly thing. This year, the crowds at the pier will be encouraged to “Search the Limits” of God’s fullness through live music, dance, street performances, illusions, drama, and the spoken word. Our Pier Ministry Team is excited to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Come on out and join us in this innovative outreach.

This year, we’ll be at the Pier from July 30–August 5, 7–10 p.m., —as we Search the Limits!
