There’s not much time in the

day for the new Director of

Emergency Director Services

to fix up his office, which is

why John Callahan (image

by Mike Asselta) has a

shopping cart full of electronic equipment taking up a fair amount of floor space.

“I’m trying to get this rearranged,” Callahan offers as a brief apology, but when you’re

directing one of the largest and busiest departments of the Salvation Army, remodeling takes a

back seat to storms, wildfires, and all manner of other emergencies that can strike across

Kansas and Western Missouri.

You might say service is a deep-seated part of Callahan’s DNA who joined the Salvation Army

after a career as a firefighter spanning more than 30 years, following both his father and

grandfather as volunteer firefighter in Colorado.

“We’ve always been into the service areas,” Callahan explained, “Right out of high school, I

went in the Army and served, and then I got into the fire service.”

In 1995, Callahan moved to Kansas City, and joined the Southern Platte Fire Department as a

volunteer before becoming a fulltime firefighter in 1996 when the department transitioned to a

professional unit. From EMS to Lieutenant to Captain to Division Chief, Callahan has worn

every helmet in a firefighting unit over the course of his career.

His dedication to service has passed down to his children, daughter, Patti, studying to be a

nurse and son, Jack, in ROTC, two years away from becoming a second lieutenant in the

Army.

“Everyone in my family has been into some type of service thing whether it was a school

teacher, law enforcement, EMS, fire, military.

We’re just a service type of family.”

It was Callahan’s commitment to service which lead

him to join a new family early in 2018. The Salvation

Army needed a new Director of Emergency Disaster

Services, and after retiring from 30 years of

firefighting, Callahan was eager to start a new

chapter while still serving people in need.

“I knew of the Salvation Army working through

the fire department, but I never knew how diverse

it is. That’s what I knew from coming out during disasters and helping with hydration and

feeding,” Callahan said.

Joining the Salvation Army was eye-opening for Callahan as he saw the true width and depth

of our reach and impact. “They really are a diverse group and do a lot of good.”

And a great deal of the good is performed by the very people who Callahan started his career

as in Colorado, volunteers.

“Volunteers are very passionate,” Callahan observed from his years of experience, “I don’t

think you’ll find anything as pure as a volunteer, because their heart and their soul is in what

they’re doing.”

Now working with the Salvation Army and its dedicated volunteers, Callahan is ready to help

people put their lives back together because every disaster is personal for the individuals

effected.

“I’ve been on a lot of fires. Every fire is devastating, because it’s terrible to see someone lose

everything they have,” Callahan remembered from his three decades of fighting fires.

As the new director, Callahan’s priorities include shortening the roll-out time for the

Salvation Army’s 18 canteens to hit the road to the scene of disasters and prepare for

situations that would test any organizations capabilities.

“What if we need to feed 5000 people?” he asked, not rhetorically. “How are we going to do

that? And do we have a plan to do that right now?” A disaster necessitating such a need is

indeed possible across the 86,772 square miles in Kansas and Western Missouri.

So, the former fire chief, called to service immediately after high school is ready to tackle a

new career, chapter, and challenge with the Salvation Army.

The event staff did not have exact numbers of attendees, however, they indicated that they had

roughly 3000 walkers and 300 runners signed up prior to the event. With families and friends

attending to support walkers and runners, the total attendance for the event was estimated to

be around 8000 people. “I think that's probably the largest event I've personally been involved

with so far,” Dave Bahan KOØTER , communications coordinator.

Steve Leiker sent out a call “for help with a 2 alarm fire in the Northland of Kansas City,

MO.” Gary Thurman KDØSHT and Mike Asselta (both SATERN members) answered the call

out. The Salvation Army ready canteen was deployed and the SATERN members provided cold

drinks, and snacks for over 40 firefighters, and about 20 residents.

The American Radio Relay League Field Day is an international event held every

June. During the exercise amateur radio operators (or hams) set up temporary transmitting

stations in various places to demonstrate the science behind amateur radio. The event also

showcases the skills of various amateur radio operators and exhibits for view the service those

amateurs perform for their communities and to the nation. The ARRL Field Day combines

public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a

single event. Field Day has been held annually since 1933. ARRL Field Day remains the most

popular event in ham radio.

The Santa Fe Trail Amateur Radio Club, Olathe, Kansas selected the historic

Marshall Ensor Park & Museum to stage the ARRL Field Day where amateur

radio history was made.

The Ensor Park and Museum, located in Olathe, KS, is a very special place for amateur radio

operators. The museum is operated by Olathe Kansas Parks and Recreation and is a National

Historic Site. Local amateur radio operators frequently act as volunteer docents. The

property was a farm where Marshall Ensor (pronounced Enser), W9BSP, lived with his wife

and Marshall’s sister, Loretta Ensor, W9UA. Much of the architecture is from the late 1800s

and early 1900s. Marshall was a shop teacher at the Olathe High School. As a hobby,

Marshall taught Morse code classes over the radio for many years prior to World War

II. Marshall was recognized for helping possibly thousands to become proficient in the

language of Morse code. Marshall and Loretta were very active in amateur radio for more

than 50 years. The property reflects both Marshall’s interests in woodworking as well as

many pieces of radio equipment. The home includes a fully functioning amateur radio

station.

Central THQ, Hoffmann Estates, IL – Central Territory Disaster

Coordinator Kevin Ellers has announced the appointment of a new

Central Territory SATERN Coordinator.

Appointed to the post is Ronald L. Cooper (KD9KNS). Cooper is the

Central Territory Disaster Training and Data Support Manager.

Although a newly licensed amateur radio operator, he has had

extensive experience in disaster work with The Salvation Army. As

a 5th generation Salvationist employed by “The Army” for the past

28 years he has a deep understanding of the mission and needs of

The June monthly joint Johnson County ARES/SATERN Meeting was held on Monday, June

11, 2018 at the Olathe Corps in Olathe, KS. The meeting began with SATERN member Herb

Fiddick asking those around the room to give their callsign, name and their plans for Field

Day, if any.

SATERN Divisional Coordinator Rich Britain spoke about the SATERN 30th

Anniversary Net

Rally. Rich encouraged those present to check into various SATERN nets particularly

Kansas and Western Missouri Divisional SATERN Nets which had been registered for the

rally which would begin on June 25, 2018. More information about the SATERN 30th

Anniversary Net Rally is available at SATERN.org.

The featured presentation was delivered by Bill Brinker, WAØCBW, and “Van” Van Daveer,

KØHCV. It was on the Yaesu proprietary digital communications platform “System Fusion.”

While the digital communications system appears daunting, Bill showed that it is still just

pushing a button on a radio and talking.

Amateur radio stations across the nation fill nets in

the mornings (The INTERNATIONAL SATERN

SSB NET is on 14.265.0 MHz on Monday through

Saturday at 11:00 AM (ET) / 10:00 AM (CT), 0900

(MT), 0800 (PT) with contacts for up to two hours.

Multiple States stations reporting included AL, AR,

AZ, CA, CO, GA, KY, FL, IA, ID, IL, KS, KY, LA,

MD, MO, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, SD,

VA, WA, WI, SD, TX, UT, plus those station could not copy, and Alberta and Ottawa, Canada.

first responders and evacuees of the 416 Fire

years, and recommends this study aide, it supplements other methods of study, for those

Southcars (South Coast Amateur Radio Service) is currently preparing for our 2018

Technician course. This course will be starting on Sunday, August 12th, and running through

Tuesday, September 4th. It will be a four-week course with two classes per week Sunday and

Tuesday evenings at 6 PM CT. Classes will run about an hour per session.

The 2018 – 2022 question pool which becomes effective July 1st consists of 424 questions

found within 10 sections of the document. You, the student, will be assigned approximately 53

questions per class night, and your instructors will be covering 23 percent of those question

which they have handpicked as those that cover the section the best. Each of the 8 instructors

are seasoned hams, all hold Extra class licenses, and all have been instructors with us for

many years.

The course material is free and will be shown on this page as they are assembled. We conduct

this class on our EchoLink server and information may be found in other areas of this

website. Since this course is for those not licensed yet and our server only allows licensed

hams entrance, we use a social media platform into our system. Skype is our platform of

choice and can be downloaded for free at https://www.skype.com/en/download.

Enrollment is now open for those interested in our August Technician course. Please register

at VOIP@SCARSVOIP.COM, and please include your first name, location as in city and state,

your preferred email address, your Skype user name, and your telephone number to be used in

emergency situations only.

The INTERNATIONAL SATERN SSB NET is on 14.265.0 MHz on Monday through

Saturday at 11:00 AM (ET) / 10:00 AM (CT), 0900 (MT), 0800 (PT).

The INTERNATIONAL SATERN DIGI-NET is on 14.065.0 MHz on Saturdays at 1:00 PM

(Eastern) / 12:00 PM (Central). Default mode is OLIVIA 8/500 (8 Tones, 500 Wide) offset by

the standard 1000 Hz.

The CENTRAL TERRITORY SATERN NET is (currently not in operation per 5/3/2018.)

The EASTERN TERRITORY SATERN NET will be reactivated in the near future. Watch
