Stop Blood ClotsBefore They StopYou(NAPSA)—Every year, up to
600,000 Americans develop bloodclots in the veins of their legs orlungs. Risk factors for these clotsvary, but most frequently involvesurgery, hospital stays of three ormore days, hip and knee replace-ment, cancer and cancer treat-ment, a family history of bloodclots, or disorders that simplycause their blood to clot too much.
Blood clots that form in thelegs or lungs are responsible forabout 100,000 deaths annually.Fortunately, the use of blood thin-ning medications, also known asanti-coagulants, stops clots fromforming and can mean the differ-ence between life and death. Sur-prisingly, some people at risk maynot be given these medications ormay not take them as prescribed.
“You should discuss the preven-tion of blood clots with your doc-tor, particularly if you’re hospital-ized or having surgery,” explainsGary Raskob, PhD, Dean of theCollege of Public Health at theUniversity of Oklahoma, andChair of the Medical & ScientificAdvisory Board of the NationalBlood Clot Alliance (NBCA). “Ifyou take a blood thinner, talk toyour doctor about any concerns orproblems you have, and get clearinstruction to help you take themedication properly.”
According to Dr. Raskob, bloodthinning medications like war-farin have been prescribed fordecades. These older therapiesrequire routine blood tests andcan interact with other medica-tions and certain foods. Newerblood thinning medications intro-duced in recent years don’trequire blood testing, have fewerdrug interactions and can betaken without special dietary con-siderations. Both older and newerblood thinners effectively preventor slow the formation of danger-ous blood clots.
For more information, visit theNBCA website at www.stoptheclot.org.
Learning About Earning(NAPSA)—Amid the escalating
costs in higher learning is a grow-ing chorus of concern that stu-dents need helpful resources andtools to make the right financialdecisions when mapping out theircareer path.
To that end, there’s an app, formobile phones and tablets withiOS or Android, designed to helpteens explore potential futureincome from a desired career andassess the cost of education.
Called JA Build Your Future™,it was created by PwC US andJunior Achievement USA® (JA), anonprofit that aims to financiallyempower youth; to assist teens, their parents and teachers inmaking responsible financial deci-sions based on future careerchoices.
The app describes 100 careers, covering the education and costrequired as well as the potentialincome. Users determine theamount of money they can con-tribute and the student loansthey’ll need. A Return on Invest-ment score shows how easy or dif-ficult it’s likely to be to pay off thedebt in a timely manner based onfuture income.
To learn more, visit www.ja.organd www.pwc.com/US.
The average student loan debt isabout $26,000 and not all careersgenerate enough income to paythat off easily—but a new appcan help you plan.
Don’t Duck Duct Cleaning(NAPSA)—If giving a warm
welcome to cooler weather andfestive times with family andfriends means turning up the heatin your house, there’s somethingyou ought to know.
You may need to clean the airduct system. Air ducts and venti-lation systems can get stuffedwith dust, pet hair and other con-taminants; an invitation to mold, vermin and bacteria.
The good news is that cleaningit can save you money. Researchby the U.S. EPA has demonstratedthat HVAC cleaning and removingdebris from sensitive mechanicalcomponents may let systems runmore efficiently. Clean, efficientsystems are less likely to breakdown, have a longer life span andgenerally operate more effectively.
A professional heating andcooling system cleaning contractorcan help, particularly if the com-pany belongs to the National AirDuct Cleaners Association(NADCA), which tests the knowl-edge of contractors for safe andeffective heating and cooling sys-tem cleaning.
Learn more and find certifiedAir Systems Cleaning Specialistsat www.nadca.com.
If there’s a burning smell whenyou fire up the furnace for thefirst time, the system is signalinga dust buildup that must be dealtwith.

Understanding Medicareby Patricia Smith
(NAPSA)—During Medicare’sannual open enrollment period, which ends December 7, millionsof Medicare beneficiaries mustdecide on their Medicare Advan-tage (MA) health plan for the com-ing year. While many factors gointo deciding about a plan—cost, choice of doctors, benefits—there’sone important question Medicarebeneficiaries should ask: What isthe quality rating of the plans I’mconsidering?
A high rating means betterhealth care and the best value foryour money. Medicare uses a sys-tem called Star Ratings. Plansreceive a rating of up to five stars. These ratings are based on thingslike how well the plan does atkeeping people healthy by makingsure they get the treatments, testsand vaccines they need to preventillness, how quickly you can getan appointment and see special-ists, and how the plan responds toyour complaints and concerns.
For 2014, over a third of MAplans will receive four or morestars, which is an increase from 28percent in 2013. Seven of the 11MA plans earning five stars thisyear are members of the Allianceof Community Health Plans, anorganization representing thenation’s leading health plans.
You can learn more about MAplans—and their quality ratings—using the Medicare Plan Finder atwww.Medicare.gov. MA plans arecalled “Medicare Health Plans” inthe Plan Finder.
The National Committee forQuality Assurance also evaluatesquality in MA plans; those rank-ings can be found at www.ncqa.org.
• Ms. Smith is president andCEO of the Alliance of CommunityHealth Plans, www.achp.org.
People on Medicare can changeplans or enroll in one for the firsttime by December 7—or they’llhave to wait until next year.

preneur who gives back byteaching underprivileged kids hiswoodworking skills; a group ofretirees who work all year on toysfor the holidays; a high schoolclass that saves a beloved tree byturning it into a favorite gather-ing place: They all do good withwood, improving their communi-ties and enjoying the satisfactionthat comes with a job well done.
If you or someone you knowused woodworking and wood fin-ishing to improve the community,Minwax wants to recognize thosegood works with the Do GoodWith Wood Award.

(NAPSA)—Recently, numeroushome cooks competed in the 2013National Beef Cook-Off contest, funded by The Beef Checkoff. Thisyear, contestants were challengedwith a new recipe category—Crave-able Fresh Beef and Fresh Califor-nia Avocado. Contestants developedflavorful and nutritious dishes thatpaired delicious lean beef andcreamy California avocados.
Many experts say lean beef—filled with protein, iron and Bvitamins—can help satisfy youand maintain a healthy weight, build muscles and fuel an activelifestyle. California avocados arealso nutrient dense, in that theyprovide substantial amounts ofvitamins, minerals and othernutrients with relatively few calo-ries. In fact, one-fifth of a mediumavocado (1 oz.) has 50 calories andcontributes nearly 20 vitaminsand minerals and phytonutrients.
Take This To HeartResearch also shows that eat-
ing lean beef, even daily, as part ofa heart-healthy diet and lifestyleimproved cholesterol levels. A 3-oz. serving of lean beef provides25 g (about half) of the daily valuefor protein, which is one of themost satisfying nutrients.
In a study published in TheAmerican Journal of ClinicalNutrition, researchers from PennState University found that peo-ple who consumed lean beef dailyas part of a heart-healthy dietexperienced a 10 percent declinein LDL “bad” cholesterol.
California avocados also fit intoa heart-healthy diet, providing“good fats,” 0.5g polyunsaturatedfat, 3g monounsaturated fat, andno cholesterol per 1-oz. serving.Additionally, a 1-oz. serving ofavocado contains 26 milligrams ofbeta-sitosterol, a natural plantsterol that may help maintainhealthy cholesterol levels.

The little Lord JesusLaid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright skyLooked down where He lay
The little Lord JesusAsleep on the hay
The cattle are lowingThe poor Baby wakesBut little Lord JesusNo crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord JesusLook down from the sky
And stay by my side,'Til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus,I ask Thee to stay
Close by me foreverAnd love me I pray
