MUHU ISLANDTHE ISLAND WHERE TIME RESTS

Muhu island lies about half an hour by boat from the mainland, and there is much to see here. Walking the narrow and winding village roads with their stone walls along them, you will understand the care and love that the people of Muhu put into keeping their homes and courtyards in order. In Liiva and Koguva you can fi nd and buy beautiful handicraft items with Muhu patterns and souvenirs made from aromatic juniper wood. The largest cultural event here is the midsummer music festival „Juu Jääb” (The Muhu Future Music Festival) that brings a lot of great musicians from far and wide. Muhu is a great holiday destination for those who value peace and quiet, nature and culture.

EASTERN SAAREMAA

This region of Saaremaa island has a long history of blacksmithing, as you can discover today in Saikla village. The winding shoreline is ideal for horse riding, boat trips and picnics. There are several venerable churches here, and also the ancient and imposing Maasi Fort. And if you are arriving by sailboat, there is a port in Orissaare.

CENTRAL SAAREMAAThe parishes of central Saaremaa have many special places of interest to the visitor. Beer lovers can fi nd local home-brew beer in Pihtla, and there is an annual beer festival (Õlletoober) every summer near Leisi. The Panga cliff s in Mustjala are a much visited natural attraction, and cruise ships arrive to the new Saaremaa deep water port at Ninase. The pearl of the Kärla region is beautiful Karujärv lake, and in Kaarma parish the dolomite quarries and popular organic soap cottage industry are great places to visit.

PÜHA CHURCHThe architecture of Püha church provides an interesting insight into the past. Various construction styles have been utilised at diff erent periods of renovation to the building.

KAALI METEORITE CRATERSThe crater was formed thousands of years ago by a meteor impact. The whole area is peppered with craters of various sizes; and the main crater has fi lled with rainwater and is now a lake. Mature trees ring now ring the steep sides of thecrater, and there is a path circling the crater’s rim. Kaali meteorite crater is also a superb natural amphitheatre and summer concerts and events are sometimes held there. The main crater is an impressive sight, and is unique in Europe.

WESTERN SAAREMAAVilsandi National Park was originally created as a bird sanctuary in 1910. Now it is one of the foremost protected areas of Saaremaa. There are over 100 islands in the park, and many visitors come to see the thousands of migratory birds, or to hike the wild unspoilt landscape. Nearby is the beautiful Viidumäe protected forest. Viidumäe has a varied fl ora with many rare plants, especially rare wild orchids. The recently renovated Kihelkonna church and bell tower are unique in Eastern Europe. And in the south west of Saaremaa is the Sõrve peninsula and many wonderful local beaches. Each autumn during the Saaremaa Rally, the stage at Kaugatuma is one of many popular viewing places.

VIIDUMÄE NATURE RESERVEThe nature reserve was established in 1957 and has a total area of 2,598 ha. The keyword in Viidumäe is diversity. There are a great many diff erent species of plants here, including many protected rare species. You can fi nd 675 species of butterfl ies, 660 species of fungus, more than 200 species of spiders, nearly 100 species of brooding birds, more than 230 species of moss and more than 230 species of lichen. VILSANDI NATIONAL PARKThe total area of the Vilsandi National Park is 23,760 ha. It ranges over one hundred islands and extensive areas of Saaremaa’s western coastline. 7,529 ha of the park are dry land. The existing Vilsandi National Park was established in 1993, but a history of protecting the region dates much further back, starting with the Vaika rocky islands that were taken under protection by the initiative of Vilsandi lighthou-se warden Artur Toom in 1910 (Vilsandi Bird Area). Later, the Harilaid protection area was established by Tartu University in 1924, and the Vaika nature reserve in 1957. The goal of the Vilsandi National Park is to protect the environmental and cultural heritage of the shore landscapes of the islands of western Estonia. Primarily, the Vilsandi National Park is known as a bird protection area with a total of nearly 250 diff erent bird species in the region. There are a lot of grey seals in the waters of the protection area, and they also give birth on the small islands here if the winter conditions are correct. Nearly 600 plant species have been found within the national park, including many rarities. The Vilsandi National Park is a region with an old and well-known sea culture. The people living on these shores have been seafaring, building ships, fi shing and shaped an original heritage landscape over centuries. The Vilsandi lighthouse was built in 1809.The Visitor Centre of the national park is located in Loona manor, where there is an information desk and exhibition about the life of the islands. There is comprehensive information available about the national park. Several hiking trails in the national park have direction signs and information tablets.+372 454 [email protected], www.vilsandi.ee

Kuressaare, the capital of Saaremaa, becomes ever morepopular both among visitors from abroad and Estonians too. The growing number of spas has returned the town’s former reputation as a resort town. It is pleasant to walk andbike in Kuressaare as the town has become especially beautiful in the recent years, especially the beach promenade which is great for romantic walks. In the summer there are open-air cultural events nearlyevery day, plays in the Kuressaare town theatre and concerts in the local culture centre - all ideal after relaxing in the spas. ABRUKA ISLANDThe tiny island of Abruka is located 40 minutes boat ride away from Kuressaare. It is a calm and peaceful place where time seems to stop. Its broadleaf groves, wooded meadows and rare plant ecologies are especially attractive to nature lovers. Twin writers Ülo and Jüri Tuulik have made much of their dear island of Abruka. The “Abruka stories” from Jüri Tuulik have been used as a basis for a stage play that is performed in various courtyards and other locations of the island each summer. Access to Vahase island is over a shallow body of water where the water level is only up to the knees in summer. There are two large glacial boulders on the shore of the island, and these are under protection since 1937.

This is the western-most inhabited island in Estonia. The glory and toil of former times, the old farms and seafaring activities, the ancient lighthouse and rescue station, all have all left a strong impression here. Vilsandi island is still popular today with seamen, ship builders, artists, writers and musicians. The natural landscape is almost untouched and there is a wide variety of species. The Vaika Bird Area (founded 1910) was the fi rst nature protection area in both Estonia and Russia. You can get here on foot (by wading through the water), on a truck or by boat.

This island of Saare County is closer to Latvia than Estonia. Ruhnu is called Runö by the Swedish people, and it is also called the pearl of the Gulf of Riga. The fi rst written mention of Ruhnu island was in the freedom letter of the Bishop of Courland in 1341. As Ruhnu is the farthest island from the Estonian mainland, people seem to live by their own rules here. On Ruhnu concerts, stage plays, exhibitions and dance parties are all conducted with the participation of the entire population of the island. Visitors are also welcome to join these events. In winter the island is accessible by plane, in summer by sea.

A wide variety of locally caught fi sh provide many interesting dishes in the islands. Herring is especially popular, but you can also fi nd fl ounder, garfi sh and whitefi sh according to the season. There is always plenty of choice with fi sh being salted, baked, smoked, fried or grilled. Accompanying fi sh dishes, “tuhlis” and even better “runnakas” (types of potato), are eaten with “nott” (a thick fl our sauce). You can also fi nd scones (small barley fl our buns baked in oven) or barley fl our dumplings cooked in a meat broth with “keefi r” (buttermilk). In western Saaremaa, grated potatoes, fried onions and smoked lard is baked together into a pan bread that has a great taste. Buttermilk can also be made into something sweeter: “kama” or “podi”. Kama fl our is made by grinding rye, wheat, barley and peas cooked in salty water and then dried and roasted. Kama fl our is mixed with buttermilk or kefi r and then sugar or salt is added according preference. In order to make “podi”, pieces of dark rye bread are poured into buttermilk, sugar is added, and then the bread pieces allowed to become soft. In early spring, the rivers are rich with roach fi sh – these are dried by hanging under the eaves of the house. A home-owner may off er you a cup of homebrew beer from the basement (homebrew beer is still made in nearly every village) and give you a couple of freshly dried fi sh with the beer, and then you get to know why the people on the islands are such a great folk.
