Objectives
• New Mexico is a poor state in the traditional definitions of the 19th and 20th centuries
• New Mexico is a rich state IF we can recognize we are in the Digital Age
• A proposal for economic development– Little capital cost– Large commitment to change

The catalyst: Lienzo de Quauhquechollan

Restoration story
• Trans-disciplinary teamanthropology, archaeology, chemistry, epigraphy, ethnobotany, digital technology, film animation, graphic design, history, law, photography, storytelling and textiles
• Digital restorers, animation programmers, script writers, and narrators.

Restoration story
• Photographers captured high-resolution images of the original at the Casa de Alfeñique Museum in Puebla, Mexico.
• For maximum resolution– divided the surface of the Lienzo into three rows
and five columns. – For each of the 15 sections, they created a 4 x 5
inch reprography plate (negative) and a scan. – The quality is so high that individual threads of the
cloth can be seen clearly.

Every cultural artifact has a story
• Who• What• Where• When• Why• How• So what?

“Borrowing” from GISystems
• Geographic Information Systems = integrates, data, hardware, software and GPS to assist in the analysis and creation of maps.
12
![Page 13: The s+a3 project: leveraging analytic resources](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062617/54c9068c4a795971598b45ed/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Borrowing from GIScience
• Geographic Information SCIENCE – Examines impacts of GIS on individuals and
society, and the influences of society – Incorporates more recent developments in
cognitive and information science. – GI Science overlaps with and draws from more
specialized research fields such as computer science, statistics, mathematics, and psychology, and contributes to progress in those fields.
– Great strides in geo-statistics

Figure 6 Patient OFDI-03 Images of Right Coronary Artery(A) A left anterior oblique angiogram after stent deployment shows stent site (s) and 3.0-cm optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) pullback segment (ps). (B) Fly-through view (distal-proximal) demonstrates a calcified lesion underneath the stent (arrow). (C) An OFDI cross-sectional image, obtained at location of yellow arrow in B, shows a large calcific nodule from 11- to 4-o'clock. Tick marks, 1 mm.

Remote sensing
• The art or science of telling something about an object without touching it.
• Important and desirable when analyzing artifacts
• More recently……using images acquired … by employing electromagnetic radiation in one or more regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, reflected or emitted…

DNA analysis
• Much more than living things– “DNA analysis of ancient paint samples indicates
that paint’s binder made from deer or bison bone marrow” – Science News May 27, 1995

Action steps
• Conduct Digital Enterprise skill census in Northern NM – businesses, gov’t., NGO, et al.
• Facilitate “conversations” btwn analytic and museum/conservation/restoration communities
• Network to promote small (~250-400) conferences, e.g. Society for Archaeological Sciences
