Welcome Pastor Lee Thank you for taking time to connect with God and community today. It is good to be together while apart. Online space can be sacred space.

Our anchor image for this Holy Spirit season is the wind/breath of God.

As we enter further into worship, breathe. Take a moment to center your being in the One Who Is (YHWH).

May our worship today calm our fears, inspire our desires, and empower positive change within us and through us.

Hymn Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness #2120 verses 1 and 2

For today's worship experience we've adapted a liturgy generously shared by friends at St Clare's Episcopal Church.

Special thanks to Lisa Ozaeta and Rev. Patty Baker. The bell rings, inviting a round of lament. Unison Prayer with Alma: Holy One, Father, Spirit, Son; We gather in a troubled time, and as troubled people. We bring you our sadness... grief...anxiety...and despair. Receive our lamentations, we pray. In your time, may our mourning turn to dancing. Amen. Ekaterina (1) – Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. - Psalm 4:1 Presider: Please write on a piece of paper something that you are grieving, or something that has caused distress during this time. Presider: I receive your grief and add it to the bowl. Ron (2) – Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep. - 1 Samuel 30:4 Presider: Please write on a piece of paper something that grieves you or makes you weep during this time. Presider: I receive your tears and add them to the bowl. Marcia (3) – For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. - 2 Corinthians 1:8-11 Presider: Please take a moment in silence to write on a piece of paper something that feels beyond your strength or that has caused despair. Presider: I receive your despair and add them to the bowl. Tom (4) – For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16

Presider Please write on a piece of paper an unmet need during this time. Presider: I receive your unmet needs and add them to the bowl. Linda (5)– My tears have been my food day and night. While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” Psalm 42:3 Presider: Write down something that brings tears or something that has caused you to ask Where is God? Presider: I receive your tears and frustrations and add them to the bowl. Reri (6)- He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 Presider: Write down anything that has caused your heart to break during these long weeks of isolation, the recent weeks unrest, or other heartache. Presider: I receive your heartaches and add them to the bowl. Shelley (7) - For the Lord will not cast off forever, but, though he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men. Lamentations 3: 31-33 Presider: Acknowledge your grief by writing down something that you have grieved or are grieving. Presider: I receive your grieving, and add it to the bowl.

Alma: O, Father, The darkness has fallen upon us It feels as though we cannot see each other As though we cannot see You. We pray for the end of this night, but dawn does not come Each day is filled with more darkness. We wait for a sign of the morning, but the night stretches on Testing our hope. Testing our faith. When will the sun break Bringing new light and new life Where is the Son who can heal our darkness? Show us the Light And comfort our hearts Wake our souls out of this grieving slumber.

Page 4: the ruwach (spirit/wind/breath) of God swept over the face ...€¦ · weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence

Call to us to Arise Turn our darkness into light Replace our grief with soothing peace. Remind us of your Promises. Fix our eyes on You And help us to cast off the heavy darkness.

ROUND OF RENEWAL Presider: Now we enter into the Round of Renewal. Part of healing is to acknowledge our grief, but the other part is to acknowledge the gift of healing that God offers us. The bell rings, inviting a round of renewal. Unison Prayer with Alma Restorer of souls, renew us. Help us to receive your Spirit’s strength and encouragement. In the face of our personal and societal storms, we will keep our eyes on you. We will hone our hearing to your voice. For in you we find our strength, our healing, and our calling.

Ekaterina (8) – Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. - Joshua 1:9 Presider: On a piece of paper, write down one thing that you are thankful for. Presider: For the offering of gratitude, I add one seed to our planter of hope. Ron (9) –Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Presider: Lord, take our grief and release us from the burden of carrying it. As the baptismal waters absorb these papers, may our despair be diluted and absorbed. Renew us in the womb-waters of your creation. Hover over our chaos, sweep over our depths with your mighty wind.

Page 5: the ruwach (spirit/wind/breath) of God swept over the face ...€¦ · weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence

Presider: Write down one way that you have seen strength during this time either in yourself or in the community. Presider: For all of our strengths, I add one seed to our planter of hope. Marcia (10) – It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. - Deuteronomy 31:8 Presider: Write down how you know God is with you. When is a time that you have felt God’s presence or assurance in your life? Presider: I add one seed to our planter of hope for the recognition that God is with us. Tom (11) - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. - Romans 15:13 Presider: What gives you joy? Write down either something that gives you joy or fills you with hope. Presider: (Our hope is in the Lord. He fills us with his Spirit and allows us to experience joy and hope even when it doesn’t seem possible.) For the joy expressed, I add a seed to our planter of hope. Linda - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. - 2 Corinthians 1:3-5. Presider: Write down something that has comforted you or how you have provided comfort to others. Presider: (God comforts us and gives us the gift of allowing us to comfort others. Our joy and renewal comes in how we serve others.) For comforts remembered and shared I add one seed to our planter of hope. Reri (13) – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. - John 14:27 Presider: What gives you peace? Write down either something that gives you peace or helps you not be afraid?

Page 6: the ruwach (spirit/wind/breath) of God swept over the face ...€¦ · weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence

Presider: (Our peace comes from God. He guards our hearts and minds and helps us to not be anxious.) For each instance of peace, I add one seed to our planter of hope. Shelley(14) – Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. - Philippians 4:6-8 Presider: What is something that is worthy of praise or something so good that you know that you have to be thankful for it? Write that down. Presider: (God takes away our anxiety. God tells us to focus on these things that are worthy of praise. This helps us be filled with peace that doesn’t make sense in the current situation. This peace is our renewal.) For our praiseworthy thoughts, I add one seed to our planter of hope.

Alma: O, Father, We have Peace Because You are God And You hold us in Your hands. We have Light Because You are the Light That pierces through all darkness. We have Hope Because You are our Redeemer Who calls us Your own. We have Strength Because You are our Help Who upholds us in Your righteous hand. Encourage us! Sustain us! Bring us joy and singing! Open our hearts to praise.

Page 7: the ruwach (spirit/wind/breath) of God swept over the face ...€¦ · weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence

Presider: Father, we thank you that no matter what is going on in the world that you are there to plant an active hope in us. Help our hope to grow as these seeds will grow, and to bear the fruit your love inspires. As we shower these seeds with your living water, we welcome anew the transforming presence of your Holy Spirit. Unison Prayer with Alma: Thank you God for your steadfast love. Help us honor those things that we grieve and focus on those things that will bring us life and renewal. Open our hearts that we will know your peace. Let us delight in you. Amen. Hymn Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness #2120 verses 3 and 4

Benediction May the blessing of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you now and always. Amen.

* Prayer Flags Available - Pick up your prayer flags from the big black box outside the church parking lot door. Something for all ages! Write or draw your prayers on them, and hang them in the wind at home, on the church grounds, or around the valley. SUMC's worship committee anticipates returning to the sanctuary no sooner than July 12 . When that time comes, we will maintain an online option for those who best stay home. Thankfully there are other ways to keep connected, to make new friends, and to continue growing spiritually. New wine skins! The building is closed, but the church is open.
