Welcome to the final edition of the Rutland Scene for 2010!

In this festive edition we’ve got local Christmas information for you on markets, celebrations and services in your beautiful county. We’ve also teamed up with many local businesses to give you some ideas for gifts either for loved ones or even if you need to leave out a ‘wish list’! See pages 24 & 25.

The Rutland Photographic competition has now finished, with the judges making a decision on the winner any day now, so keep your eyes peeled! We have featured some of the images as a taster of the stunning photography to come. In the New Year editions, we’ll show off some more entries.

For the children, we have teamed up with ‘Buy the Book’ in Oakham and local author Yvonne Barclay, and brought you a drawing and colouring competition. See page 11 for more details.

Local organisation ‘Out of the Rut’ is a great stop for your seasonal fruit and vegetables, see page 21 to learn more. Locally there have been celebrations with the Tourism Awards recognising the hard work and commitment by many Rutland based businesses, which you can read more about on page 34.

We have our popular book reviews in this month, as well as travel, motoring and beauty tips. Finally our useful numbers list has been refreshed – don’t forget to get in touch if your group would like to be featured here.

Finally, have a enjoyable, safe and relaxing festive season and make sure you stay in touch during 2011!

The search for the Rutland Photographer of the year 2010, on conjunction with ‘Buy the Book’ of Oakham, is nearing its conclusion as the competition officially came to a close at the end of October. Many local businesses have supported the competition including Rutland Cycling, Barnsdale Gardens, Anglian Water, Oakham School and RAF Cottesmore as well as the local media, all helping to see a huge total of 250 entries. The standard of photographs has been extremely high and the judges face tough decisions to choose the winners for each of the seven categories and one overall winner. In addition, a selection of images will be chosen for the book ‘Our Rutland’ which will come out in Spring 2011. The final aim of the book is to bring the best photographic talent together to help celebrate the county of Rutland and to assist in promoting the area as a tourist destination and a great place to work. The winners will be notified by the beginning of December and the Rutland Scene will feature some of the winning images in the New Year editions.

Bertie looked around for signs of alien life,And that is when

he noticed lots of green mice. They all had whiskers and

googly eyes And they were big! Much bigger than earth

mouse size.

The mice were fat and looked well fed. They had all the

cheese that they could eat! They munched the cheese

with goofy teeth As they dug out more, with their spoon

shaped feet.

Little Bertie’s heart beat fast as every mouse he could seeStared at him with beady eyes,Like they might eat him for tea!

AdventAdvent is traditionally a time to prepare for Christmas, decorate the house and buy presents and send cards. In the Church it is a time to prepare for the message of Christmas Day. Advent is a Christian festival leading up to Christmas. The name advent means ‘coming or arrival’. When does advent start? Advent starts on the first Sunday after Saint Andrew’s day (November 30th) and continues through the next four Sundays that will lead up to Christmas day. In many churches candles (either red or purple) are lit on these four Sundays, and a fifth (white) candle is lit on Christmas day.

ChristingleChristingle means ‘Christ’s Light’ and it is a symbol of the Christian faith. Many churches hold Christingle services with the custom of giving out lighted candles originating from the Moravian Church in Germany in 1747 and introduced to the Anglican Church in England in 1968. Christingles are made up of different parts, each one being there to remind us of something. The orange represents the world whilst the candle is to remind us of Jesus because Christians believe Jesus to be the light of the world. The red ribbon goes all round the ‘world’ and reminds Christians that Jesus died because it represents the blood of Jesus. The four cocktail sticks could have either of two meanings: the four seasons or the four corners of the world. The sweets (or sometimes dried fruit) is to remind us of God’s gifts to the world including kindness and love.

See pages 36 & 37 for Christingle, Advent & Christmas services in Rutland or contact your local parish church office, contact details on pages 4 & 5.

Let us try to answer some of the questions you can find yourself pondering and maybe help you to overcome some objections.

It is too formal for me?

This is no longer a problem. Some cruises have retained the more formal approach, but many others have a balance with a percentage of formal nights, theme nights and casual nights in the main restaurant but if you prefer there will be at least one buffet restaurant with casual dress. If neither of those cruise types’ appeals to you, you still have the freestyle option, casual dress throughout all restaurants; no need to book, just turn up and eat.

Will I be bored when at sea?

Whatever your preference, whether you just want to relax and not do a great deal, if you’re in your more senior years and prefer like company, looking for a family cruise or if adventure is your middle name, there is a cruise out there to cover all your needs. The bigger the ship, naturally the wider the choice. A newsletter will be delivered to your cabin every evening, detailing the next day’s programme, so you can join in as much or as little as you like.

What about tips?

This has been a worry for many first time cruise passengers and some cruise lines are now including tips in the initial cost.

Others give you an option when booking to prepay tips. If you sail on a cruise line that still retains the tips system you will be advised what the standard rate is, this is normally for your cabin steward and restaurant waiter.

What money do I need onboard?

None. You will be given your personal identification card on embarkation. This is used for all purchases on board and you pay at the end of your cruise. Most cruise lines will provide a bill about around halfway through your cruise just to give you an idea of how your spending is going.

All those shore visits, paperwork and disembarking sounds like too much hassle.

You are under no pressure to go on any shore trips in fact many people, especially in Europe, have a leisurely breakfast and walk off and take in the local area independently. There will be some destinations where certain formalities are required but, do not worry, if you have booked the tour before boarding much of this will have been done before you even board the ship. Remember cruise ships have been visiting these ports for many years and have vast experience in guiding and assisting you. There are some passengers who never leave the ship, happy to enjoy the onboard facilities.

New to the world of Cruises? Wonder if it’s for you?

Lighting is one of the most, if not the most, important factor in a room, yet it is often overlooked. Good lighting can make the difference between a dull, dated and unwelcoming room and one that is cosy, welcoming and has a great ambience. It can easily make your home appear bigger, fresher and more unique as well as adding value.

Most rooms need a variety of lighting and it is important to create a lighting scheme before you start to plan and decorate a room. Use light to enhance your surroundings, generate the

correct lighting for the tasks performed in each room and create the correct mood for each area.

Make a plan of where the furniture is going, features you would like to highlight and what kind of usage each area/furniture piece is intended for. Will the room be used during the day or in the evening or perhaps both? Will it be used primarily for entertaining or perhaps for study and work or once again a combination of both?

Hot tip:To make a room appear larger, place an uplighter in a corner. It will create a

feeling of more space.Sol Sunnarvik

Furleys | 51-53 High St Oakham Rutland LE15 6AJTel: 01572 755 170

Should your room feature predominantly table and floor lamps, think about the colour scheme of the walls, upholstery and curtains when you go shopping for lamp shades and bring fabric and paint swatches with you for a good match. For wall and ceiling lights a dimmer switch is a great

option as it will instantly change the lighting from work and study mode to a cosy and relaxing one.

Candles will also instantly change and soften the mood of a room - a must for the dark and cold winter months!

Lighting - a key factor in your home.

In the heart of Oakham, local residents can now benefit from a new fruit and vegetable shop who’s ethos is ‘fresh, local and affordable’.

Run by local business, ‘Out of the Rut’, the purpose of the shop is to provide opportunities for people with mental and/or physical impairments who live in Rutland, to gain employment in a voluntary or paid capacity and to learn greengrocery skills and gain confidence from serving customers. The shop is classed as a ‘social enterprise’ as profits are ploughed back into the company.

Some produce, such as bananas will always have to be bought in, but where they can, Out of the Rut source from within Rutland and on many occasions from Oakham itself. The shop buys surplus allotment and garden produce, most recently stocking seven plum and six apple varieties from the Oakham area. Paying 50p per kilo, it won’t set you up, but supports the fresh, local and affordable ethos, and as ‘Toby’ found out recently, can boost your pocket money!

Shop manager Trish Hudson is also keen to keep selling more unusual produce such as beautiful pattypan squashes grown in Loddington, yellow and round courgettes, cape gooseberries and curly endive.

Us women have been searching high and low for years to find ways to enhance our natural beauty. Here are some tips that every women should be following to make them glow.

Vaseline. Not many people realise, but Vaseline is nothing short of a beauty miracle. Apply it to your lips and eyelids for a soft, shiny effect and dab onto eye-lashes after makeup removal to prevent them from becoming brittle and break-ing. And those split ends? Simply tie your hair into plaits before bed and apply a small amount of Vaseline to the ends. And voila, in the morning you’ll be split end free!

Rehydrate, rehydrate, rehydrate! You’ve probably heard it all before, but water is the simplest way to a more beautiful you. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day will keep your skin looking soft, hydrated and young.

Moisturising twice a day is essential. In the morning and evening, massage moisturiser in upwards, circular motions into the skin. This brings nutrients to the skin’s surface and also helps to boost circulation. Again, this helps to rehydrate your skin and prevent wrinkles.

Natural ingredients can be a life saver. You don’t need to break the bank to look beautiful, as ingredients such as sea salt can be just as good as expensive

brands. Use sea salt to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells in the shower. Alternatively, mix coffee grounds with salt and rub all over the body to exfoliate. Rinse off, moisturise and your skin will be soft and supple.

And finally, sleep! Your body needs time to restore itself and take a rest, so you should aim to get at least 8 hours every night. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and revitalised

Control your weight the healthy way

Being ‘thin’ may make us feel good but doesn’t necessarily make us healthy. There are many underlying health problems caused by weight control, many of which we are unaware of. Sam Moon has been a stay at home mum for eight years and during this time has developed a huge interest in Fitness and Nutrition. Having recently qualified as a Personal Fitness Trainer and Nutrition Weight Consultant, Sam is now bringing these skills to the area for you to benefit from. Part of this is aiming to make people aware that whilst we all want to be slim, our health is very important too and if we put exercise and nutrition together in the correct way we can be happier with our body at the same time as being healthy and feeling healthier. Sam’s programme concentrates on encouragement and motivation with clients, getting them to understand that exercise can be a lot of fun and doesn’t have to be some-thing they dread doing and end up putting off!

Rutland County Council is pleased to announce the creation of a new permissive Bridleway in the county thanks to T W Brown and Son Farm in Lyddington as part of a Natural England environmental scheme, which aims to achieve maximum environmental benefits for the area, as well as increase public access to the countryside. The new bridleway was officially opened on Saturday 16th October at 10am by Rutland and Melton MP Alan Duncan.

The bridleway is a 4.5 km circular route that will provide safe, off-road riding in the Lyddington area. Its creation is part of an agreement with Natural England that includes improved facilities for educational access to the farm and the enhancement of wetland habitats next to the River Welland.

Uppingham Theatre Company bring Pantomime back to town..........Oh! yes they do...and this year it’s Sleeping Beauty. This traditional pantomime, which has magical fairies and swashbuckling heroes, follows our Minstrel as he narrates this hilarious tale of Sleeping Beauty. Uproarious buffoonery from Bumble the chancellor and side splitting mirth from Dame Cranny, provide ample opportunity for laughter until Beauty’s fateful 18th birthday when she finds the terrible topmost turret and the spinning wheel fulfilling the evil Caraboss’s curse with disastrous consequences. Can our Minstrel find a Prince, brave enough to fight the maniacal malevolence of Carabosse, to wake Beauty from her enchanted sleep with loves first kiss? Will the evil Carabosse ignore your boos and hisses to stop him and seal Beauty’s fate forever…….…. or will they live happily ever after?

Tickets priced at £10 for adults with concessions at £8 available from Uppingham

A recent visit by Jem’s Hip Hop from Stamford to the world famous Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden, London gave over 40 dancers to chance to take part in a day of professional classes from some of the best. The team led by Jemma Bacon and Matt Wheatley (directors of Jem’s Hip Hop Ltd) took a coach early morning and arrived just in time for a surprise visit from Creative Director at the Studios Louie Spence.

Once the day was underway all the students had plenty of opportunities to experience the world of professional dance in classes with some of the best teachers in the country. Throughout the day the students all aged 9-17 took part in classes such as Michael Jackson Style, Breakdance, Fusion Funk as well as one of the hardest professional classes available.

I have been on employment and support allowance for just over a year. I am feeling a little better and would like to try and gradually

return to work. I have been told that I can work for a few hours and keep my ESA. However a friend has told me that because my ESA is based on my National Insurance contributions (because I worked for years), I will lose most of what I earn in reduced housing benefit and

council tax benefit. With the extra cost of getting to work I am worried I could end up worse off working and would I really have been

better off if I hadn’t paid contributions?

A recent change in the regulations means that anyone on incapacity benefit (IB) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) doing what is called ‘permitted work’ will now be able to keep all the money they earn and all the money they get in benefits as long as they stick to the rules and limits on permitted work.

The change irons out an injustice in the benefits regulations which discriminated against people like yourself who had worked before becoming too ill or disabled to do so. Under the old rules, people on the means-tested sickness benefits could keep all their earnings from ‘permitted work’ and all their benefit income, while those on the contribution-based versions, but who had no more income or savings than those on the means tested versions of these benefits, were up to £60 a week worse off, simply because in the past they had worked and paid national insurance contributions.

The idea of ‘permitted work’ is to gradually allow people on IB or ESA to get back into work mode. But there are strict rules about how long you can do this for, how many hours you can work, and how much you can earn. You can earn £20 per week on an ongoing basis. You can usually only earn more than this for a year but for that year you can earn up to £93 per week. You must work less than 16 hours per week. You need to inform DWP if you are doing permitted work, (and your local council if you get housing benefit and/or council tax benefit), and it may lead to a reassessment of your work capability. If, after a year, you start working more than 16 hours a week, you may be entitled to the disability element of working tax credit. There is a lot of help available to help you get back into work but it can be quite complex. Get free, confidential and independent advice from your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau – go to www.adviceguide.ork.uk or check your local phone book for contact details.
